The aim of this paper is to analyse the cost-effectiveness of payments to organic farms in Luxemburg from an agri-environmental perspective. For pursuing this aim, farm accountancy data, farm structure data and 7 environmental indicators were assessed for 12 organic and 12 conventional dairy and suckler-cow farms. Results show that organic farms cause substantially lower environmental impacts than their conventional counterparts. However, these additional environmental benefits do not go along with higher public payments. Therefore, we argue that agricultural policy in Luxemburg currently does not provide incentives for ecological friendly agricultural production in a sufficiently targeted way.

One of the objectives of the TILMAN-ORG Project is to improve weed management under conservation agriculture (reduced tillage and/or cover crops) in organic arable systems. The shift from ploughing to conservation agriculture should not only maintain crop yield but possibly improve weed community diversity. This paper summarises the results on (1) weed abundance, (2) weed diversity and (3) crop yield obtained in the first year of the project (2012) in 13 trials scattered across Europe.

Klaedtke, Stephanie; Zimmer, Steffi; Aendekerk, Raymond.
Thirteen winter wheat varieties (Triticum aestivum L.) bred in conventional breeding programs and seven varieties from organic breeding were tested under organic conditions in two locations in 2009/10 and 2010/11 in Luxembourg. The objective was to analyze whether these conditions, organic varieties perform better than conventional ones. Grain yield (dt ha-1), protein content (%) and Zeleny sedimentation value were analyzed. The effect of the factor variety was statistically significant at a probability level of 0.05 for the three traits. For grain yield, the variety x year x location interaction was significant. For protein content, the variety x year interaction was significant. Location x year interaction was significant for sedimentation value. Results...
