Employing student evaluation of teaching (SET) data on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate economics courses, this paper uses ordered probit analysis to (i) investigate how student’s perceptions of ‘teaching quality’ (TEVAL) are influenced by their perceptions of their instructor’s attributes relating including presentation and explanation of lecture material, and organization of the instruction process; (ii) identify differences in the sensitivity of perceived teaching quality scores to variations in the independent variables; (iii) investigate whether systematic differences in TEVAL scores occur for different levels of courses; and (iv) examine whether the SET data can provide a useful measure of teaching quality. After providing some general background on developments in Bangladesh’s economy, the article indicates the nature of international political pressures, as represented by the Washington consensus, put on Bangladesh to adopt market-oriented reforms. The sequencing and pattern of Bangladesh’s market reforms and their consequences for its external balance are then examined. Particular attention is given to the fact that its macroeconomic reforms preceded its microeconomic ones. The impacts of Bangladesh’s market reforms on the incidence of poverty can be seen as part of the general question of the effects of these reforms on social welfare. This article uses a large sample of completed student evaluation forms of university teaching to quantify the impacts of student evaluation of teaching (SET) attributes on teaching effectiveness (TEVAL) scores. Despite much criticism of and support for TEVAL scores measuring teaching effectiveness, detailed quantitative studies of the relationship between instructional attributes and TEVAL scores are lacking. This study helps to fill this gap. Results suggest that the relative influence of teaching attributes on TEVAL scores varies with the level of the course.
