TECHNOLOGICAL FIELDS AND CONCENTRATION OF INNOVATION AMONG FOOD AND BEVERAGE MULTINATIONALS AgEcon
Alfranca, Oscar; Rama, Ruth; von Tunzelmann, Nicholas.
With a sample of nearly 18,611 utility patents, this paper studies the technology mix of 90 of the world's leading food and beverage multinationals (FBMs) over 1969-1994. It explores the statistical association between patenting in food technology and in non-food technological fields. Food patenting is always associated with patenting in Biotech, Chemistry, Machinery and Other patenting, whatever the home country of the company. The strength of the association, however, could vary. Herfindahl indices show that capabilities in core technology and in Machinery and Other fields are spread among many FBMs. Though to a lesser extent, technical capabilities in Biotechnology, Packaging and Refrigeration are also dispersed. By contrast, patenting in Tobacco,...

Technological Concentration of Innovation in Agribusiness AgEcon
Alfranca, Oscar.
The main objective of the paper is to examine and discuss the nature of technological relationships across agrifood sectors in order to understand better the pattern of technological changes in the Food and Beverage sector. We propose a new estimator to confirm the existence of linkages between technological sectors (the Technological Concentration Index). A central conclusion from this work is that the quality of data is a principal determinant in the measurement of technological flows, and that probably the use of raw patent data could introduce a distortion in the qualification of the consequences of technological spillovers.

PRIVATE R&D INVESTMENTS IN AGRICULTURE: THE ROLE OF INCENTIVES AND INSTITUTIONS AgEcon
Alfranca, Oscar; Huffman, Wallace E..
This paper presents econometric evidence of the effects of economic incentives and institutions on national aggregate private agricultural R&D investments. A model is proposed and fitted to annual data for seven European Union countries, 1984-1995. We find strong impacts of both incentives and institutions on private agricultural R&D investment, and including institutional factors strengthens the story and in some cases changes greatly the results. In particular, we reject the hypothesis that quality of property rights does not matter. We find that stronger contract enforcement, more efficient public bureaucracies, and stronger patent rights lead to larger aggregate private agricultural R&D investment, other things equal. Furthermore, we...
