Stochastic frontier analysis, which is used to estimate the technical efficiency, is extended to examine the market structure, conduct and performance hypothesis for the U.S. trucking industry. The technical efficiency measure takes into account not only the relationship between inputs used in the production of output but also simultaneously examine the importance of market structure conduct factors on the performance of the firm. An empirical application to U.S. trucking carriers over the period 1994-2003 is examined. Results reveal that the variables average haul, average load, debt-to-equity and market concentration significantly affected technical efficiency. Capital, fixed and variable input variables were significant in the production function... |

A factor analysis examined underlying relationships of selected performance indicators for U.S. ISO 9000-registered agribusiness sites. The factoring technique uniquely identified five of six primary factors-namely, improved quality performance, better training of personnel and document control, product prices, external audits, and cost of nonconformity. A sixth ill-defined factor is also identified. Each identified factor could influence the market position and/or profitability of an ISO 9000 registered agribusiness site. |

The objective of this paper is to assess the impact of NAFTA vis-a-vis other domestic and environmental forces in corn trading between U.S. and Mexico, and between U.S. and Canada. Pre- and Post-NAFTA comarison indicates that there has been a significant increase in corn trade in the post-NAFTA era. Regression analysis could not provide conclusive evidence that such increase was solely due to NAFTA. Economic crisis of severe drought in Mexico, domestic policy reforms such as cut in government's price support and withdrawal of ban on feeding corn to livestock may have contributed in the increased volume of corn trade in the post-NAFTA era. |

The advent of genetically altered seed has had a revolutionary effect on the cotton, soybean, and corn seed industries. The basic premise for the use of these seed are to reduce costs through lower applications of chemicals and savings on trips through the field, thus, lowering production costs. Seed companies, however, charge a premium and a fee for use of the seed. This paper compares the costs associated with conventional and roundup ready soybeans. Data were collected from the ACost of Production@ survey of Mississippi producers that is administered by Mississippi State University through the National Agricultural Statistics Service. The survey is a random sample of producers fields that allows for a derivation of the cost of production for each field.... |

This paper presents the results of the corn portion of the 1985 grain flow survey and makes comparisons with 1977 when the previous survey was done. The most significant change from 1977 was the increase in exports from the Pacific Northwest ports from 15 million bushels to over 290 million in 1985. This was accomplished by an increase in rail shipments from Nebraska, Minnesota, and South Dakota. The decline in European Economic Community demand reduced corn movements through the Great Lakes and Atlantic ports and, consequently, truck movements to those ports. Trucks increased their share of domestic movements. The large 1985 corn crop and subsequent increase in stocks reduced the volume of interstate movements and the length of shipping distances.... |
