Reviewing, Reviewers and the Scientific Enterprise AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent.
Despite their critical importance to the scientific enterprise, reviewers receive no formal training and reviewing has become a skill that they pick up through trial and error. Additionally, because most reviewers do not receive any feedback on their performance, any bad reviewing habits become entrenched over time. This has contributed to significant and unnecessary anxiety about reviewing and to antagonistic encounters between reviewers and authors. This paper seeks to correct this situation by defining reviewers as co-creators of scholarship and the reviewing as a quality control process in the production of scientific scholarship. The paper provides three groups of activities aimed at creating the right mindset among reviewers to facilitate this...

HEALTH VALUE IN FOOD SAFETY SURVEILLANCE INITIATIVES AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Mowat, David; Boland, Michael A..
Recognizing the increasing concern about the potential health effects of genetically modified foods, this research provides a framework for economic value of monitoring genetically modified food for their potential long-term human health effects. This is with the view of helping policy makers improve resource allocation decisions in the face of competing public health initiatives. Using a hypothetical population exposed to a hypothetical product, we estimate the health value associated with a post-market surveillance initiative. The analysis indicate that the principal challenge confronting decision makers in the implementation of post-market surveillance initiatives is prioritising products for monitoring given the uncertainty associated with outcomes...

TRACEABILITY, INSPECTION, AND FOOD SAFETY AgEcon
Starbird, S. Andrew; Amanor-Boadu, Vincent.
Traceability exists in many food supply chains for valid economic reasons, one of which is improving food safety and quality. Some politicians and consumer groups are calling for increased identity preservation in systems where traceability has not yet been adopted. In this paper, we explore the implications of adding traceability to a food supply chain that already includes an inspection protocol. Our objective is to determine whether the addition of traceability will change the feasibility of a market for safer food and whether it will change the allocation of profits between producers and processors. We find that the addition of traceability to this system does influence whether or not the market will be feasible. If traceability is too high, then...

Do Inspection and Traceability Provide Incentives for Food Safety? AgEcon
Starbird, S. Andrew; Amanor-Boadu, Vincent.
One of the goals of inspection and traceability is to motivate suppliers to deliver safer food. The ability of these policies to motivate suppliers depends on the accuracy of the inspection, the cost of failing inspection, the cost of causing a foodborne illness, and the proportion of these costs paid by the supplier. We develop a model of the supplier's expected cost as a function of inspection accuracy, the cost of failure, and the proportion of the failure cost that is allocated to suppliers. The model is used to identify the conditions under which the supplier is motivated to deliver uncontaminated lots. Surprisingly, our results show that when safety failure costs can be allocated to suppliers, minimum levels of inspection error are required to...

Entrepreneurial Supply Chains and Strategic Collaboration: The Case of Bagòss Cheese in Bagolino, Italy AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Marletta, Piercarlo; Biere, Arlo W..
Many small towns and communities are struggling to sustain their competitiveness in the face of increasing globalization. Yet, through entrepreneurial supply chains, some communities are organizing themselves to forge local solutions to their global challenges. The essence of entrepreneurial supply chains is its ability to facilitate alignment of all participants in the chain, eliminating moral hazard and opportunism risks. It is argued that this governance system and an ability to protect the common assets from infringement by outsiders are necessary for the success of these solutions. The research uses Bagòss cheese, produced in the small Italian village of Bagolino, to illustrate the characteristics of entrepreneurial supply chains and test the effect...

Consumers' Perception of Sustainably Produced Food: The case of local and organic production technologies AgEcon
Whorton, Carly S.; Amanor-Boadu, Vincent.
This paper identifies ways to improve on the current literature regarding sustainable production technologies, in this case, organic and local products. A survey method is used to examine organic and local markets in place of a single product to gain a better understanding of consumers‟ response to these products, their reactions to price differences of these products, and how their preferences change based on changing income level and prices. The sample was drawn from a commercial database and was attempted to be made random across the U.S. population. In place of results, hypotheses are presented as data were late coming back.

Land O' Lakes AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Barton, David G..
The case begins with an examination of Land O' Lakes' diversified portfolio of businesses. The business had undergone significant changes since 1998 - it dominated market share in butter and deli cheese, had become the largest crop protection, plant nutrient, and feed manufacturer in the US, and was the fourth largest US seed company. Land O'Lakes used mergers, joint ventures, acquisitions of public and private firms, and divestitures/closing of assets to restructure its portfolio to build its portfolio. The main issue was to evaluate its diversified portfolio of businesses and find ways to improve future performance.

On the Distribution of Net Benefits from Sustainability Initiatives in Agri-Food Supply Chains AgEcon
Ross, Brent; Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Ross, Kara L..
Sustainability initiatives are frequently imposed on upstream supply chain members by their more powerful downstream partners. This paper assesses the challenges of estimating costs and benefits for participants and the difficulties associated with identifying their locations and effects in the supply chain. The paper argues that the success and endurance of agri-food supply chains that purport to pursue sustainability objectives depend critically on the distribution of the associated costs and benefits. It calls on supply chain leaders to give careful consideration to the distribution of net benefits across the chain to ensure that opportunism and moral hazard are minimized.

Consumers and the Evolution of New Markets: The Case of the Ethical Foods AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Schnitz, Casey.
Changes in consumer preferences have frequently created new markets for new products. This paper explores the antecedents of the changes in consumer preferences and the factors influencing the evolution of niche markets into commodity markets and its speed. The results show that the more embedded characteristics products have and more consumption is driven by attitude, the longer products are able to maintain their uniqueness and the slower their evolution to commodities.

Research Faculty, Entrepreneurship and Commercialization: The Case of Kansas State University AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Metla, Chandra Mohan Reddy.
In this study, we assess the relationships between the demographic characteristics of researchers and their perspectives on entrepreneurship and the commercialization of their inventions, and analyze the relationship between faculty perceptions of university commercialization policies and their entrepreneurial orientation. We conclude that there is a need for effective educational programs to address each of the issues and increase awareness among faculty and researchers.

System Dynamic Approach to Assessing New Product Introduction: The Case of Functional Foods in the United States AgEcon
Ross, Kara L.; Amanor-Boadu, Vincent.
Health care costs particularly those associated with chronic health conditions such as cancer have been significantly increasing for both individuals and governments in the past decades, prompting the demand for preventative medical initiatives, such as functional food, and spawning a new industry in the food sector – functional food industry. This article conducts a feasibility study for a firm entering the functional food industry with a specific product, Avert®, CLA-enhanced cheese. It also assesses alternative market conditions under which the firm will be successful. A system dynamics framework is used for the analyses. The results show that a firm can be profitable in the functional food industry provided that it satisfies certain pricing and target...

Dan Dillon, CEO of Welch Foods AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Boland, Michael A..
Welch Foods saw its purpose as building long-term value in the cooperative and releasing that value back to the grower-owners over time and to provide a reliable market for their grapes through excellence in product quality, customer service, market responsiveness and consumer satisfaction. Welch's processed 50 percent of Concord grapes and 80 percent of Niagara grapes produced in the United States into juices, jellies, jams and other products. The objective of this executive interview is to introduce Dan Dillon and Welch Foods and describe challenges faced by a producer-owned cooperative in the 21st century. Putting Entrepreneurship into Agricultural Economics: Research and Teaching Perspectives-Discussion AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent.
Two of the three papers presented in this session illustrate the challenges of defining the boundaries of entrepreneurship, and the other extends our perceptions about the concept to encompass interorganizational relationships. Together, they provide a reason to hope that entrepreneurship can enter the language and thinking of agricultural economists and influence our research, teaching, and outreach activities. The work presented by Ross and Westgren and Klein and Bullock provide good reference material for students and scholars interested in the evolution of economists’ thinking about entrepreneurship. Unfortunately, they, like many before them, fail to address the pertinent gap in the literature: the boundary of entrepreneurship. But they can be...

How Much Did Speculation Contribute to Recent Food Price Inflation? AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Zereyesus, Yacob Abrehe.
Recent increases in commodity prices have led to calls for the regulation of speculators. These calls have come from many reputable quarters including leading agricultural and food policy institutions such as International Food Policy Research Institute as well as different members of the U.S. Congress. They are based on an assumption that speculative activities are a primary or major source of the volatility in the markets and that controlling these activities through regulations would bring more stability to the market. The paper tests this hypothesis and assesses the contribution of speculative activities in the commodity markets over the past decade to price inflation. The paper argues that government regulatory policies to control speculation in...

Producers as Investors in Agricultural Research: Searching for Alternative Funding Strategies in Land-Grant Universities AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Zereyesus, Yacob Abrehe.
This research begins the effort to identify the effect of new models of relationships between producers and researchers in land grant universities in the area of innovation and commercialization. We argue that since producers are becoming increasingly significant funders of university researchers, the benefits of the Bayh-Dole Act could be accelerated for universities if they formed commercialization partnerships with these producers. Contrary to the expectation that allowing such relationships will adversely affect the universities and their researchers, we aim to show that there will actually be a positive benefit to both producers and institutions.

Distribution of Local Government Revenue Sources and Citizen Well-Being AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Zereyesus, Yacob Abrehe; Ross, Kara L..
The paper aims at examining how sources and distribution of revenue at the local government level influence the economic well-being of citizens. The results of this study help to illuminate the effect of revenue sources on local government efforts on economic development and their capacity to influence the well-being of their citizens. We hypothesized that the distribution of local government revenue influenced the wealth status of its citizens. Three empirical proxy measures for citizen well-being were used in the estimation of three different panel data models. Results from the estimations suggest that local government revenue generated from its citizens (e.g., taxes, insurance and charges) have more influence on citizen well-being than non-citizen...

TRADE LIBERALIZATION AND THE WTO NEGOTIATIONS AFTER SEATTLE AgEcon
Amanor-Boadu, Vincent.
Trade liberalization has been received around the world with mixed emotions. The completion of the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in December 1993 brought conversations about international trade into the conversation of the general public in a significant way for the first time. What is most important, individuals against or concerned about increased global trade have successfully organized themselves into forces of recognition, taking the conversations about trade from the back rooms into the streets. This was manifest at the Third, or Seattle, Ministerial Conference which was aimed at ushering in the Next Round of Trade Negotiations under the World Trade Organization (WTO) in December 1999. During the volatile week in...
