Extraction followed by reverse phase liquid chromatography (LC)/electrospray ionization-ion trap-mass spectrometry (ESI-IT-MS) analysis has been successfully developed for the determination of peptaibols, fungal toxic metabolites, in marine sediments. Spiking experiments showed that the mean recovery of target compounds exceeded 85% at a spiking level of 10 ng/g of sediment (wet weight). Detection and quantification limits were 250 and 830 pg/g of sediment, respectively. The method developed constituted the first sensitive assay for quantification of peptaibol trace amounts in a natural environment. A concentration of 5 ng/g in sediment samples collected from Fier d'Ars was found. |

Trace elements (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Se and Zn) were determined in liver and kidney of pilot whales Globicephala melas Traill, 1809 collected from 7 schools caught at different seasons around the Faroe Islands. These and other biological data at our disposal enabled us to confirm and to define more accurately the relations shown previously between age, sex and trace element concentrations in marine mammals. The most striking features were: (1) the elevated levels of Cd and Hg in pilot whales compared to other marine mammals and to minimum adverse-effect levels established for humans; (2) the biocumulative behaviour of Cd and Hg; (3) the high correlations between Hg and Se, predominantly influenced by age; and (4) the high correlations between Cd and Zn, the... |

The present study was designed to compare the response to contaminants in diploid with triploid specimens of the oyster Crassostrea gigas. The reproduction investment in bivalve molluscs has priority on somatic growth. Thus, genetic sterilization by triploidy induction enables the energy flux to be directed toward somatic growth and glucide storage. Bioaccumulation was examined for Ag (10 mug/L), Cd (10 mug/L), and Cu (30 mug/L) to determine if the response to metals follows similar patterns in diploid (2n) and triploid (3n) groups. The effect of ploidy was also evaluated as a function of dry weight of soft tissue and condition index. Moreover, the reciprocal influence of these metals on their incorporation was studied. The results showed that the major... |

Engineered nano-sized Cu oxide particles are extensively used in diverse applications. Because aquatic environments are the ultimate "sink" for all contaminants, it is expected that nanoparticles (NP) will follow the same fate. In this study, two marine invertebrates Scrobicularia plana and Hediste diversicolor were chosen as ecotoxicological models. The aim was to evaluate behavioural (burrowing kinetics, feeding rate) and biochemical (biomarkers) responses of S. plana and H. diversicolor exposed in the laboratory to Cu (10 mu g L(-1)) added in natural seawater either in the form of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) of CuO or as dissolved Cu in 2% HNO(3). Exposure was characterized by considering (i) the physico-chemical fate of NP (ii) the fraction of... |

Shellfish farming is a common industry along European coasts. According to the 2005–2006 data from the French National Shellfish Farming Committee (CNC – Comité National de la Conchyliculture 2010; see Table 1 for a list of acronyms and abbreviations used in this chapter), Spain is the largest shellfish producer in Europe (∼270,000 t) and France ranks second, producing 200,000 t of shellfish annually. France is the leading European oyster producer, with an annual output of 130,000 t of Crassostrea gigas, and ranks fourth in the world after China, Japan, and Korea. The top three European mussel (Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis) producers are Spain (260,000 t), Denmark (80,000 t), and France (65,000 t). For other shellfish, the French annual... |
