Research collaboration between China and Denmark for development of systemic approaches to agro-ecological pest management without pesticides with focus on vegetable, fruit and berry crops. Proceedings and recommendations from two network workshops Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels; Andreasen, Lise; Ravnskov, Sabine; Steenberg, Tove; Enkegaard, Annie; Sigsgaard, Lene; Eilenberg, Jørgen; Munk, Lisa; Langer, Vibeke; Korsgaard, Maren; Wu, Wenliang; Qiao, Yuhui; Zhang, Long; Guo, Yanbin; Liu, Yunhui; Zhu, Zengrong; Wang, Jianwu.
This report is the result of a network project which was established to discuss the potential for collaboration on development of systemic approaches to pest management without pesticides between Chinese and Danish researchers. The focus is on systemic approaches rather than input substitution of synthetic chemicals with agents of natural origin, however, the latter is considered as an integrated tool for the development and design of systemic approaches. The discussions were, furthermore, limited to management of invertebrate pests as well as diseases, while other pests such as weeds have not been included in the discussions. The discussions took place at two workshops and were based on presentations of research from the two countries and field visits in...

The potential of organic agriculture for contributing to climate change adaptation Organic Eprints
Müller, Adrian; Osman-Elasha, Balgis; Andreasen, Lise.
Agriculture is and will be affected negatively by climate change in many regions. Most vulnerable are poor agricultural communities in the Global South and assuring food security for the twenty-first century requires successful adaptation to climate change in agriculture. Besides being affected by climate change, agriculture also contributes significantly to it. Some 10–15 per cent of total global greenhouse gas emissions are direct agricultural emissions. Adding emissions from conversion to agricultural land increases this share to more than 30 per cent. This chapter addresses the potential of organic farming systems to adapt to climate change. Depending on the context, the focus lies on the adaptation of the agricultural production system, of a community...

Organic Research and Development in Denmark (1996-2010) - Effects on the Organic Sector and Society Organic Eprints
Andreasen, Lise; Rasmussen, Ilse Ankjær; Halberg, Niels.
The ICROFS (International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems) has conducted an analysis of the effects of organic research in Denmark (1996-2010) on the Danish organic sector and on society in general. Over these 15 years, three national programs and one program with European collaboration have been implemented in Denmark, financed via special government grants that amounted to just over 500 million DKK (approx. € 67 million—or approximately $ 80 million). The analysis itself was carried out as a compilation of information from three perspectives, each of which has been independently documented: • Interviews with (representatives of) end-users of results from research and development (R&D) investigating their assessment of the challenges in...

Urbanization and transformation of agri-food system: Opportunities for organic producers in developing countries Organic Eprints
Lazaro, Evelyne A.; Halberg, Niels; Andreasen, Lise; Karantininis, Kostas; Rye Kledal, Paul; Mugisha, Johnny; Sibuga, Kalunde P.; Mbapila, Shadrack.
Developing countries especially in Sub-Saharan Africa are pronominally agricultural based. Where the majority of the population resides in rural areas and engaged in agriculture as a source of livelihood. However, recently there has been a growing debate globally on rapid urban population growth in developing countries. The aim of this paper is to present opportunities for organic producers emanating from transformations of agri-food systems in urban area. The paper is based on research activities of a project ‘Productivity and Growth in Organic Value Chains (ProGrOV)’. ProGrOV is collaboration between universities in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Denmark addressing the need for sustainable development of smallholder farming systems in East Africa with...

INFORMATION FLOWS IN ORGANIC VALUE CHAIN RESEARCH – EXPERIENCES FROM THE PROJECT ’PRODUCTIVITY AND GROWTH IN ORGANIC VALUE CHAINS (ProGrOV)’ Organic Eprints
Andreasen, Lise; Halberg, Niels.
The project ’Productivity and Growth in Organic Value Chain (ProGrOV)’ is a combined research, development and capacity building project that focuses on different aspects of organic value chains in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. It is addressing the need for sustainable development of smallholder farming systems in East Africa with focus on value chains for local high-value markets as well as export chains through PhD and MSc projects at universities in the three countries. While some research has focused on improving productivity and Natural Resource Management of smallholder farmers in Eastern Africa this has most often not been linked with studies of how to link improved production to market access and quality demands. The project is developing a value...

Exploring the concept of agroecological food systems in a city-region context. Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Escudero, Arthur Getz; Chappell, M. Jahi; Brinkley, Catherine; Nijbroek, Ravic; Arraes, Nilson A.M.; Andreasen, Lise; Gattinger, Andreas; De Almeida, Gustavo; Bossio, Deborah; Halberg, Niels.
Based on urgent needs for food security compounded by a changing climate which impacts and is impacted by agricultural land-use and food distribution practices, we explore the processes of action in implementing agroecological food systems. We identified the following characteristics for an agroecological food system: 1. Minimizing use of external inputs, 2. Extent of internal resource recycling, 3. Resilience, 4. Multifunctionality, 5.Building on complexity and incorporating greater systems integration,6. Contextuality, 7. Equity and, 8. Nourishment. We focus on the city-region food systems context, concluding with practical drivers for realizing more agroecological food systems in cityregion contexts. Agroecological food systems are widely...

Contribution of organic farming to public goods in Denmark Organic Eprints
Jespersen, Lizzie Melby; Baggesen, Dorte Lau; Fog, Erik; Halsnæs, Kirsten; Hermansen, J.E.; Andreasen, Lise; Strandberg, Beate; Halberg, Niels.
The potential contribution of organic farming to the public goods, ‘Nature and Biodiversity’, ‘Environment’, ‘Energy and Climate’, ‘Human Health and Welfare’ and ‘Animal Health and Welfare’ in Denmark is guided and partly secured by the principles and specific requirements of the EU Organic Regulation. However, other factors, such as the production type, farm size, geographical location and—not the least—the management of the farm, also influence the contribution. Using the ban on synthetic pesticides and restricted use of antibiotics, including the requirements to compensate for and prevent such uses in organic farming, as examples, the positive and negative contributions of organic farming in relation to selected public goods were analysed. The...
