Introduction In response to the recommendations of recent studies on the health and welfare of dairy cattle (Whay et al. 2003) and to assist farmers to meet legislative requirements, promoting farm animal welfare and meeting consumer demand, this study investigated, by means of farmer interviews, the effectiveness of herd health and welfare assessment and benchmarking as a farm management tool. The aims of the study were to • offer support to the organic farming sector and provide detail relevant to all dairy farms utilising herd health plans; • provide information to both organic dairy farmers and their veterinary advisors on the most important elements of herd health plans and the benefits of their effective implementation; and • identify the... |

This factsheet describes an Organic Centre Wales, supported by Farming Connect, project to benchmark organic dairy, beef and sheep enterprises. The results provide a good basis for understanding the financial contribution of individual enterprises to the farm business, as well as a better basis for price setting. In 2004/5, data from over 50 organic farms in Wales (almost 10% of the total) was collected and analysed using standard Farm Business Survey methods. Data are presented and findings for variable costs and sales and the future for the organic market explained. |

This factsheet describes the Organic Farming Scheme, an agri-environment scheme that offers payments to farmers in Wales to help them convert to organic farming with the aim of benefiting the environment. It is a key part of the Organic Action Plan for Wales, one of the aims of which is to increase the area of agricultural land in Wales under organic management by 10 – 15% by 2010. The OFS is funded by the EU and the Welsh Assembly Government as part of the 1999-2006 Rural Development Plan (RDP) for Wales, and will be subject to revision for the new 2007-2013 RDP. Issues covered include, how payments are structured, who is eligible, how to apply and how to get advice on organic conversion. |

Potato blight Phytophora infestans is a major limiting factor on potato production and is a particular problem for organic growers in Wales. The use of blight resistant varieties is an important strategy in the management of late blight. Hungarian Sárpo varieties appear to have greater late-blight resistance than any currently available to Welsh growers. In 2004, ADAS Pwllpeiran undertook field trials of 19 Sárpo varieties provided by the Sárvári Research Trust, with the following objectives: |

This factsheet covers financial performance of upland organic beef and sheep production. Survey data illustrates that while organic farms can achieve similar incomes to conventional, the finances for both organic and conventional groups are at best marginal, and the models illustrate the importance of support payments. Organic premium prices are important to maintain relative incomes, but are less so here compared with dairy and arable holdings. The main factors that will influence performance are the increased role of cattle, with implications for housing and winter feed provision, as well as the emphasis on closed flocks and herds and increase on feeds produced on farm to avoid purchasing expensive conserved forage. In addition, upland farmers should... |

During spring 2001/02 organic dairy farmers throughout the UK found themselves in a situation of oversupply, which led to a collapse in milk prices and 37 per cent of organic milk being sold onto the non-organic market. However, the total annual production of organic milk in the UK has stabilised and consumer demand for organic dairy products is growing so it is unlikely to be long before the ‘supply – demand imbalance’ is rectified, potentially leading to an increase in the price paid for organic milk. This factsheet discusses challenges facing the organic dairy sector, marketing opportunities for organic dairy producers, recommendations for producers and a list of sources for further information. |

This is the final report of Defra project OF0143. Choice of break crops to grow in addition to cereals and the fertility building phase is crucial to the agronomic and economic success of organic arable rotations. There are four specific functions that a break crop may perform, namely: addition, conservation and cycling of nutrients; pest and/or disease control; weed control and improvement in soil physical characteristics. Individual break crops may perform one or several of these functions. A good break crop must also produce satisfactory yields, be of marketable quality and produce an economic return for the farmer. This project analysed the overall suitability of new break crops by simultaneous assessment of key agronomic, economic and environmental... |

This factsheet covers financial performance of lowland organic beef and sheep production. Survey data illustrates that while organic farms can achieve similar incomes to conventional, the finances for both organic and conventional groups are at best marginal, and the models illustrate the reliance of farms on support payments. Organic premium prices are required to maintain relative incomes, especially on lowland farms with dairy and arable holdings. The main factors that will influence performance are the increased role of cattle, with implications for housing and winter feed provision and the emphasis on closed flocks and herds and increase in feeds produced on farm to avoid purchasing expensive conserved forage. |

The Organic Conversion Information Service (OCIS) has been operational in Wales since 1996. In 2001 the original funding arrangements for OCIS came to an end and this review was conducted to evaluate the service and canvas farmer opinion to inform the next phase of its development. A questionnaire survey of everyone who had contacted OCIS in its first five years revealed generally high satisfaction with the helpline, information pack and on-farm advisory visits provided by the service. Farmers identified a range of extra features that would be useful, such as more information on marketing, environmental issues and conversion planning. |

During the 1990’s significant areas of hill and upland in the UK were converted to organic production. In the short term, this was driven by the downturn in conventional prices for beef and sheep, and the aid to conversion payments available. In more recent years there has been an expansion of organic farming in lowland beef and sheep, and arable systems. This provides a better opportunity to integrate hill and lowland production, and address some of the problems of infrastructure e.g. organic concentrate feed supply and limited finishing capacity for hill livestock. Decoupling of EU support from production, through the single farm payment scheme, will affect the financial performance and longer-term sustainability of both organic and conventional... |

The majority of crops grown in the UK are host to single or multiple insect pests that feed on the growing plant at some stage of their life cycle. Insect pest is not strictly correct terminology because the pests come from a wide range of families or groups, from Coleoptera (beetles), Diptera (true flies), Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), Molluscs (slugs and snails) and Nematodes. This technical sheet lists major and minor pests, provides a simple key for identifying soil pests, lists requirements for effective cultural control of pests and lists sources of further information. |

At present there is little information on current practices for ectoparasite control in Welsh organic sheep flocks. In order to rectify this lack of information a survey was carried out to investigate current practices for ectoparasite control on Welsh organic sheep farms. The results of this survey are reported in this technical note. The key findings were; • Percentage of farmers treating their flocks for ectoparasite infestations are similar for organic and non-organic sheep farmers • Although scab was listed as a major ectoparasite for both organic and nonorganic flocks only 3% of organic flocks were treated specifically for scab and only 11% of non-organic flocks • There is confusion as to what is the most appropriate treatment for specific... |

Procurement of food within the public sector cannot be divorced from the industry that supplies it or the public demand that consumes it. The contents of this Report reflect the various perspectives of the partners who have produced it as well as outlining the wide range of issues involved in making sure that local food, organic where available, is served in our schools and hospitals. All these perspectives and issues need to be brought together in order to deliver the potentially huge and positive outcomes that this work has identified. These outcomes, as the Report demonstrates, work across the economic, social and environmental agendas of Health and Education as well as Agriculture and Rural Development. The key conclusions of the Powys Public... |

Leatherjackets are the larvae of crane flies (Tipula spp.) which are better known as daddy longlegs. The largest populations are found in grassland and populations in infested fields can reach 0.6 million leatherjackets/ha. The threshold population for field crops is 0.25 million/ha. Crops of brassicas, courgettes and roots following grass may suffer most damage. Damage is usually seen in spring with young plants and seedlings the worst affected. This technical note discusses natural enemies of leatherjackets, nature of damage, life history and control measures, and a list of sources of further information. |
