| The Marennes-Oléron is a well known cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and mussel (Mytilus edulis) reproduction area. Every year, a monitoring of the reproduction of these two species is carried out on behalf of the Regional Shellfish Culture Section of Marennes-Oléron. This monitoring aims to determine the periods of larval emission in order to let the professionals know about the best collection times This study presents the main results obtained in 1999 and compares them with those obtained in 1997 and 1998. The year 1999 showed good results as far as larval emission and development are concerned in both oysters and mussels. The comparison of the three consecutive years shows the disparity of larval evolutions. |

| A study of the environmental factors in the "pertuis charentais" (charentais straits) has been carried out from 1993 tc 1994. The evolution of water temperature and salinity, as weil as the turbidity, are studied. ln the middle of Breton Strait, near to the long lines, the stratification has not been observed, and the salinity variations are much less sharp than in the stations which are located nearer the coast. | The role of epiphytes in an intertidal Zostera noltii seagrass bed in Marennes-Oleron Bay was assessed in comparison with the other main benthic primary producers (Z. noltii, microphytobenthos) at two bathymetric levels and on a seasonal basis. Assemblage and biomass of epiphytes were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Z noltii and its detrital matter followed a typical seasonal pattern: microphytobenthos was present in large quantities throughout the year representing 21% of the total biomass while detrital matter, above-ground parts and below-ground parts accounted for 65, 9 and 5%, respectively. | Cysts of metacercariae were obtained on 2 dates from juvenile sole Solea solea sea-sampled in an area of mussel cultivation (Pertuis Charentais, Bay of Biscay, France). An initial assessment of parasite genus and infestation level was based on 192 cysts extracted from 2 fish samples, taken in August (n = 20) and December 2000 (n = 14). Our results confirmed the sole as second intermediate host of bucephalid trematodes of the genus Prosorhynchus, which has not previously been noticed in Atlantic stocks. | The use of riverine dissolved organic matter by the heterotrophic bacteria associated with a culture of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa and release of simple nitrogen compounds were studied in an experimental series. Bacteria reduced the bulk of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) by half, but when associated with M. aeruginosa, DON was excreted and its concentration rose by 13%. During the stationary growth phase bacteria released ammonium, doubling the concentration of ammonia as well as of nitrates. Bacteria associated with M. aeruginosa consumed riverine DON and joined the ammonification and nitrification process, supplying cyanobacteria with simple nitrogen compounds. |
