Tapes decussates (Linnaeus), due to its economic value, is heavily fished in the Thau Lagoon. There are two types of fishing practices.First, "sight" fishing, the most common and highest paying practise is also the most selective. The fisher is equipped with a light flat-bottomed boat "néga fol" and lies at one of the ends with his face just on the surface of the water. To avoid backwash or small waves that would reduce visibility, the fisher uses an observation chamber: a cylindrical tube fitted with transparent glass at one end and the whole device is fastened around the neck with an elastic band. In his right hand, he holds a trident with long tines to dig into the sand; using a small circular net held in his left hand, he can harvest clams without even... |

In 1955 and during the first semester of 1956, and then from the first semester of 1960 to the end of 1965, 7 complete years all together, a number of analysis were conducted on the salinities of the Salses-Leucate pond At each time of sampling, samples were taken from 19 different spots in the pond (fig. 1); these spots are spread out enough for the means used in this study to be considered as representative of the whole pond. Concerning the sampling frequency, the original idea of one field trip per month has not been respected, and over the seven years, an average of nine field trips per month was conducted. Salinities are in grams per kilogram of water and are determined by the Mohr-Knudsen method. The salinity means established on this basis and... |

In presenting the activities of the Scientific and Technical Institute of Marine Fisheries (ISTPM), J. Furnestin, its director, recalled that according to law, the Institute's mission consists of carrying out "any research or study in marine science that directly or indirectly concerns marine fisheries and related fishing industries". Commenting on this definition, he insisted on the fact that marine organisms completely depend on their environment and its variations; "understanding the marine environment", he concluded, "is the basis of all research carried out at the Institute" (Furnestin, 1964a). In another publication, on "Scientific Fisheries", the director of ISTPM noted that there was no fundamental difference between fisheries oceanography and... |
