The anchovy seems to cruise around the Bay of Biscay with less regularity than the sardine. Sometimes abounding, it is rare, or at least adults do not cruise at the surface, some years. It results in some important variations in the catches with, for example in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, 736 570 kg caught in 1928 and less than 150 000 kg in 1929 and 1930. However, despite some poor years, the anchovy accounts for an important part of the fisheries statistics of the Bayonne area. In Saint-Jean-de-Luz, many boat owners and industrialists organized themselves to transform it on the spot after selling it fresh for many years to the Mediterranean retailers, and their products can now compete with those from harbours with a tradition of anchovy preparation.... |

The results of sardine fishing in the harbour of Saint-Jean-de-Luz have been less important in 1927 than the previous year; as shown by the statistics tallying up the amount of sardines caught (in thousands), each month, over the two years. In 1927, this fishery is negative for each month, except March, but the differences are greater in the months of November and December. |

These statistics show that the very poor catches of the end of 1927 continued until May 1928, although less campaigns are to be counted compared with last year's: 1 811 against 2 647. One might also notice that the small amount of sardines caught in April 1928 was counterbalanced by the catch, over the same period, of 886 735 kilos of anchovies, 10 445 kilos of mackerel and 24 030 kilos of tuna. In April, many boats stopped fishing sardine and switched to other fishes. When compared with the results of the previous years, it appears that the fisheries of June 1928 are exceptional for this season. |

The lack of salted cod-roe and peanut oil meal caused by WWII and the fact that other baits have not been able to replace it, is on the verge of putting an end to sardine fishing on the French coasts when the last barrels imported from Norway will come to their end. This situation preoccupies the Secretary of State for Marine and Colonies who has just ordered a study in order to find out if the problem could not be solved by copying Spain and Portugal where sardine has been fished without salted cod-roe for a long time already. Given the interest of the question, we are going to provide all the information we have gathered on these fishing methods through our trips on the Portuguese coast and our frequent contacts with French and Spanish Basque fishermen... |
