Considérations sur l'origine et la mise en place des ophiolites des Alpes Occidentales : apport de la connaissance des structures océaniques ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Polino, R; Lagabrielle, Yves; Olivet, Jean-louis.
We suggest that some. ophiolites of the "Schistes Lustrés Nappe" (Western Alps) originated from oceanic massives thrusted and tectonically incorporated into the ocean sediments during early compressive events. This interprétation is supported by field observations and oceanic data.

Structural framework of selected regions of the western mediterranean 1. Valencia basin ArchiMer
Pautot, Guy; Auzende, Jean-marie; Olivet, Jean-louis; Mauffret, Alain.
The alignment of the Balearic Islands, stretching from the Spanish mainland towards the Corsican-Sardinian block, has long intrigued many geologists. Since Suess (1886), we know that the Balearic block (Ibiza, Formentera, and Majorca) is part of the Alpine system. Many authors (Kober, 1914; Staub, 1928; Kober, 1931) have subsequently attempted to comprehensively integrate the history of the Balearic block within the history of the Alpine chain. In this paper, we will use data from marine geology and geophysics to define the location of the Balearic Islands during the diverse phases of distension, shearing, and compression between the European and African plates, which created the present western Mediterranean and the Alpine chain. In particular, we will...

Remarques complémentaires sur le Néogène de la mer d'Alboran ArchiMer
Pastouret, Léo; Olivet, Jean-louis; Auzende, Jean-marie; Rehault, Jean-pierre.
The existence of a discontinuity in the marine series between late Miocene and lower Pliocene in the Alboran sea has been put to light by the study of sedimentological, stratigraphical and geophysical data. This discontinuity consists of an evaporitic and salt layer in the deep parts of the basin, and of a stratigraphic hiatus near drill site 121 of Glomar Challenger. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Marine resources of the economic zone of New Caledonia ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Grandperrin, René; Bouniot, Emmanuel; Henin, Christian; Lafoy, Yves; De Forges, Bertrand; Van De Beuque, Sabrina; Virly, Sabrina.
The ZoNeCo programme, devoted to the evaluation of living and non-living marine resources within the Economic Zone of New Caledonia, illustrates clearly the Marine Benthic Habitats concept. It exhibits the study of the physical environment and disciplines such as geology and physical oceanography. The results acquired in these fields are used as bases to study the presence and the distribution of living species within a given habitat. The knowledge of all the parameters relative to each discipline is a useful guide for the evaluation and the sustainable management of living and nonliving resources.

Sampling and observation of oceanic mantle and crust on gorringe bank ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Olivet, Jean-louis; Charvet, J; Le Lann, Alain; Le Pichon, Xavier; Monteiro, Jh; Nicolas, Anne; Ribeiro, A.
THE structure and nature of the uppermost oceanic mantle and crust has been, and still is, the subject of a major international research effort . Yet the direct field evidence known to us on this subject, whether obtained by drilling in the I.P.O.D. oceanic crust programme² or by submersible surveying in the Famous programme , has been either very incomplete or limited to the upper part of layer 2. As a result, the problem of the comparison between ophiolites and oceanic crust is still debated . We report here the preliminary results of an in situ geological survey in which we have sampled and observed what we believe to be an almost complete geological section starting a few kilometres below the Moho discontinuity and ending in the upper part of layer 2...

Auffret, Gerard; Auzende, Jean-marie; Cousin, Michel; Coutelle, Alain; Dobson, M; Geoghegan, M; Masson, D.; Rolet, J; Vaillant, P.
The aim of the joint French-British CYAPORC submersible cruise was the exploration and sampling of the Porcupine and Goban Escarpments. A paleozoic mesozoic sedimentary cover has been evidenced abov ea caledonian or older cristalline basement on the Porcupine scarp. On the Goban scarp, the observed outcrops are mainly lower Cretaceous carbonates overlying paleozoic sandstones

Description géologique de la bordure provençale ArchiMer
Olivet, Jean-louis; Auzende, Jean-marie; Mascle, Jean; Monti, S.; Pastouret, Léo; Pautot, Guy.
Recent data on the western Mediterranean basin (Joides cruise, Montadert et al., 1970, Auzende et al., 1971, Le Borgne et al., 1971) and its connection with the evolution of the Atlantic area (Le Pichon et al., 1970, Talwani et al., 1971, Le Pichon et al. in writing) lead us, like other authors (Dubourdieu, 1962, Stanley and Mutti, 1968, Ryan, 1969 amongst others) to admit the theory of an opening of the Algero-provencal basin during the Cenozoic era. A series of arguments drove us to formulate the hypothesis of an Oligocene age (in process). This work is in line with this perspective. [...]

Auzende, Jean-marie; Charvet, Jacques; Le Lann, Alain; Le Pichon, Xavier; Monteiro, José Hippolyte; Nicolas, Adolphe; Olivet, Jean-louis; Ribeiro, Antonio.
Gorringe bank is one of the structures which are found on the Europe-Africa plate boundary. It is located between Tagus abyssal plain in the North and Horseshoe plain in the South. It is oriented NE-SW and is in the exact prolongation of the large "tardi-hercynien" fractures which cross the iberian peninsula and its continental margin. Gorringe bank show two summits just under the sea levels, separated by a saddle. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

La marge nord-africaine considérée comme marge active ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Bonnin, Jean; Olivet, Jean-louis.
Based on the study of some seismic-reflection profiles, we demonstrate that the identified sedimentary units show a structural anomaly at the bottom of the North-African continental margin compared to the situation observed on the other margins of the western Mediterranean basin: all the deep Messinian and infra-Messinian deposits are subjected to a flexure when reaching the North-African margin; the created depression is filled by the plio-quaternary deposits. This observation, set back in the geodynamic context of the western Mediterranean, leads to the following interpretation: the North-African margin is a very active margin at a very early evolutional stage. The abnormal structure of the gravity field in the considered region confirms this...

From intracratonic extension to mature spreading in back arc basins: Examples from the Okinawa, Lau, North Fiji basins ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Boespflug, Xavier; Bougault, Henri; Dosso, Laure; Foucher, Jean-paul; Joron, Jean-louis; Ruellan, Etienne; Sibuet, Jean-claude.
Three cruises (POP 1, SEAPSO 3 and SEAPSO 4) carried out during the "Tour du Monde" of the R.V. Jean Charcot allow us to obtain new structural and geochemical data for the Okinawa, North Fiji and Lau basins. Taken together, the structural and geochemical data illustrate a difference in evolution stages of these sites. The less evolved stage is represented by the Okinawa basin, where accretion is evidenced only by volcanic intrusion into a thinned continental crust. The most evolved stage is illustrated in the North Fiji basin, where the present-day accretion can be directly compm·ed to the East Pacific Ridge. The Lau basin displays an intem1ediate stage with a complex system of accretionary ridges. This difference in the evolution stage is translated in...

Le bassin nord-occidental méditerranéen : structure et évolution ArchiMer
Rehault, Jean-pierre; Olivet, Jean-louis; Auzende, Jean-marie.
Several marine geophysical and geological studies have been recently conducted in the ligurian Sea. Two main structural trends are present : a NE-SW direction is related to creation of the ligurian basin and a NW-SE to the Corso Sardinian microplate drifting. Strong positive magnetic anomalies and volcanic activities are associated with this last direction. Finally the North Western mediterranean Sea post-Oligocene evolution is discussed. Nature du contact Sardaigne-Tunisie. son role tectonique ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Olivet, Jean-louis; Bonnin, Jean.
The analysis of the geological and geophysical data on the North African basin and its edges highlighted the importance of a group of accidents in the NE-SW direction, embodied by the Alboran and Emile-Baudot ridges and the northern Tunisian fracture zone. A recent work (Auzende et al., London, Feb. 1972) showed that this family of accidents could be interpreted as a unique system of transforming faults linked to the creation of the North African basin.

Activité magmatique, tectonique et hydrothermale actuelle sur la Dorsale Est Pacifique entre17°-et 19°S(campagne NAUDUR) ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Ballu, Valerie; Batiza, R; Bideau, Daniel; Cormier, Mh; Fouquet, Yves; Geistdoerfer, Patrick; Lagabrielle, Yves; Sinton, J; Spadea, P.
The submersible-study of four segments of the East Pacific Rise between 17 degrees and 18 degrees 40'S, where the spreading rate is greater than 150 mm/a, allows us to confirm the variability of the accretion processes. The segment between 17 degrees and 17 degrees 30'S shows an intense present-day magmatic activity. The one between 18 degrees 10' and 18 degrees 22'S shows a mainly tectonic activity. The segment between 18 degrees 22' and 18 degrees 37'S is an intermediate stage with an axial graben in which fresh lavas were emplaced by an extremely young eruption. On all the segments the hydrothermal activity exists ranging from shimmering water up to black smokers, It is associated with different stages of animal colonization.

Sur quelques datations du volcanisme alcalin de la ligne Açores-Gibraltar et leur contexte géodynamique ArchiMer

Ages of a few rocks sampled in three sites of the Azores-Gibraltar ridge have heen determined using the K/Ar method. For one site (Gorringe hank), both whole rock and separated mineral techniques have heen used: ages are compared and discussed. All the dated samples are younger than the adjacent ocean floor whose age is evaluated from the observed magnetic anomalies. For the Gorringe bank samples, ages do not coincide with the generally accepted age for the uplift of this portion of the ocean floor. La méditerranée occidentale depuis l'oligocène, schéma d'évolution ArchiMer
Le Pichon, Xavier; Pautot, Guy; Auzende, Jean-marie; Olivet, Jean-louis.
The evolution of the Western Mediterranean basin during Tertiary time is discussed. It is proposed that it was created by a continental drift process during Middle Oligocene time, synchronously with the creation of the grabens over the continents. The significance of the Messinian evaporitic sedimentary episode is discussed in liaison with the problem of large scale subsidence which has been at least six kilometers since Oligocene time.
