Composition and diversity of spring-active carabid beetle assemblages in relation to soil management in organic wheat fields in Denmark Organic Eprints
Lövei, G.L.; Toft, S.; Axelsen, J.A..
Patterns in spring-active carabid assemblages were described in relation to four organic soil management regimes (no soil nutrient addition, undersowing, animal manure, undersowing + manure) in two areas of Denmark. On the island of Zealand, the Flakkebjerg study area had 22 species, 3-10 species/trap, and the species rank of these was the same for all treatments. The dominant species were Pterostichus melanarius, Agonum dorsale, Harpalus rufipes and Calathus fuscipes. At Foulum, Jutland, there were 46 species, 12-15 species/ trap, dominated by P. versicolor, P. melanarius, A. dorsale and Nebria brevicollis. Their rank, however, was not the same for all treatments. There were remarkable differences in the carabid assemblages of the two sites, and manure...

Effects of duration of Organic farming practice on vegetation in Danish field boundaries Organic Eprints
Petersen, S.; Axelsen, J.A.; Tybirk, K.; Aude, E.; Vestergaard, P..
Enrichment of biological diversity is assumed to reflect good ecosystem integrity. The aim of the study presented here was primarily to observe, whether organic dairy farming increases the biological diversity of field boundary vegetation when compared to conventional dairy farming. Secondly, the aim was to consider if increasing duration of the organic farming period also increases diversity. Thirdly, ecological interpretations of the data were given by comparing organic and conventional field boundaries in terms of general vegetation community patterns. The results documented that diversity of plant species was significantly higher within the organic field boundaries. Analysis of community patterns revealed that Ruderal species and species with...

Plant-pollinator interactions in organic hayfields: importance of management regime and landscape Organic Eprints
Strandberg, B.; Dupont, Y.; Axelsen, J.A.; Bang madsen, H.; Calabuig, I.; Bygebjerg, R..
Bees and other flower-visiting insects are experiencing periods of food shortage, particularly in intensively managed agricultural landscapes in Europe. As part of the Danish project EcoServe (http://agro.au.dk/ecoserve/ ) we therefore investigated whether increased richness of selected herbaceous species in organic hay fields acted as a floral resource thus enhancing abundance and biodiversity of pollinators. Moreover, we investigated if availability of floral resources was affected by cutting regime (timing and number of cuttings during the growing season) in 11 herbaceous species, which are often used in grassland seed mixtures. In a field survey, we visited 20 organic hay meadows of different age (3-100 years), and conducted surveys regularly...
