Fish diversity in the cascade of reservoirs along the Paranapanema River, southeast Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Pelicice,Fernando Mayer; Azevedo-Santos,Valter M.; Esguícero,André Luiz Henríques; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Arcifa,Marlene Sofia.
ABSTRACT The Paranapanema River is a major tributary of the upper Paraná river basin. Eleven hydropower dams regulate its main course, but no study has investigated fish diversity in these impoundments at the basin-scale. The present study investigated spatial patterns of richness, composition, and abundance of native (non-migratory and migratory) and non-native fishes in the cascade of reservoirs along the Paranapanema River. The study is based on data collected from 34 independent studies conducted in nine reservoirs (47 samples). The compilation recorded 161 species, being 111 native (14 migratory) and 50 non-native. Total richness ranged between 56 and 112 species/reservoir, with a mean of 72 (49.9 non-migratory, 8.1 migratory and 14 non-native). The...

Small size today, aquarium dumping tomorrow: sales of juvenile non-native large fish as an important threat in Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Magalhães,André L. B.; Orsi,Mário Luis; Pelicice,Fernando M.; Azevedo-Santos,Valter M.; Vitule,Jean R. S.; P. Lima-Junior,Dilermando; Brito,Marcelo F. G..
ABSTRACT Informal sales of large-bodied non-native aquarium fishes (known as “tankbusters”) is increasing among Brazilian hobbyists. In this study, we surveyed this non-regulated trade on Facebook® from May 2012 to September 2016, systematically collecting information about the fishes available for trading: species, family, common/scientific names, native range, juvenile length, behavior, number of specimens available in five geographical regions from Brazil. We also assessed the invasion risk of the most frequently sold species using the Fish Invasiveness Screening Test (FIST). We found 93 taxa belonging to 35 families. Cichlidae was the dominant family, and most species were native to South America. All species are sold at very small sizes (< 10.0...

Ichthyofauna of streams of the Rio Sapucaí basin, upper Rio Paraná system, Minas Gerais, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Azevedo-Santos,Valter M.; Britski,Heraldo A.; Oliveira,Claudio; Benine,Ricardo C..
Abstract: The Rio Sapucaí basin, in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, is one of the many watersheds of the upper Rio Paraná system. Ichthyofauna surveys in this basin, in general, are scarce. In addition, small rivers and streams of the region have been targets of anthropogenic actions (e.g., pollution) - which suggest that more ichthyological studies must be performed within the watershed. In this study we provide a survey of species that occur within three streams of the lower Rio Sapucaí basin. Samples were collected in April, July, and November 2017 and in May 2018. Collections resulted in 349 individuals belonging to 28 species, five orders, and 12 families. Among our findings are three putatively undescribed species and the first record of Oligosarcus...

Ichthyofauna of the Ribeirão Frutal and tributaries, upper Rio Paraná basin, Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Azevedo-Santos,Valter M.; Coelho,Paula N.; Deprá,Gabriel de Carvalho.
Abstract: The Ribeirão Frutal basin is located within the upper Rio Paraná system, in the Frutal municipality, Minas Gerais State, Southeastern Brazil. Until now, there was no complete ichthyological survey published for this small basin. Therefore, here we provided a list of fish species from the Ribeirão Frutal and some of its tributaries. We found 31 species of fishes representing five orders and ten families. We identify a likely undescribed and five non-native species in the Frutal basin. Lastly, we recommend new surveys of fishes in small hydrographic basins within upper Rio Paraná system.
