The Kimberley is an extremely rugged area in NW Australia extending over 170,000 square kilometers. It has always been one of the biologically unknown wilderness areas of the world. The presence of rainforest in this part of the continent was not even known before 1965. In 1986 a three-year exploration was started to unravel its mysteries. The results of this study are laid down in the present volume which deals with a variety of subjects, such as: soil, vegetation, floristics, landsnails, scorpions, spiders, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and nature conservation. The forest is of the monsoon type and consists of a number of patches varying from a clump of a few trees to 100 hectare. In many places these patches are continuous with mangrove... |

Sustainable forest management is more than limiting harvesting volume of timber in tall forest areas. Reclamation and restoration of depleted forest areas is gaining importance as areas of remaining tall forest are diminishing. Irrespective of the causal factors be it unsustainable logging, mining or forest fires, secondary forest resulting from these activities deserve special attention. In East Kalimantan a wide variety of trees has been used for reforestation of areas affected by the devastating fires of 1982- 1983. These attempts involved exotic as well as indigenous species, and results varied considerably. The 1998 fires that raged through the area sadly destroyed most of the successful trials. Gradually emphasis of reforestation has shifted towards... |

The concept of this book has taken some decades to acquire a definite shape. About thirty years ago I started attending the so-called pre-identification sessions of the then director of the Rijksherbarium, Prof. C.G.G.J, van Steenis († 14 May 1986) and Dr. R.C. Bakhuizen van den Brink Jr. († 1 May 1987), the co-author of the ‘Flora of Java’ (Backer & Bakhuizen van den Brink, 1963-1968). They spent one day a week going through all incoming material, checking the identifications on the labels and identifying unnamed specimens. The plants not recognized at first sight were put aside for further scrutiny. It was usually Rein Bakhuizen who enjoyed cracking the hard nuts. In the case of identifying trees Van Steenis and Bakhuizen very often relied on Mr.... |

Of 75 regions, some continental and others insular, the diversity as expressed in the number of Phanerogam genera is compared. As could be expected it is found that richness in both continental and insular regions is positively correlated with size and with proximity to source areas. In comparable continental and insular regions the former are always richer; increase in the number of genera with increasing size is stronger in the former. There are various factors disturbing the relations between size/diversity and isolation/diversity. The role of these factors, such as climate, age, topography and the like are discussed. It is shown that isolated islands are not always poor (New Caledonia, Fiji, Lord Howe I., Rapa, etc.). On the other hand the poverty of... |

While studying the generic delimitation between the New Guinea Sericolea and the Subantarctic genus Aristotelia of the Elaeocarpaceae I got the impression from the descriptions that all but one species of Aristotelia described from Australia would belong to Aceratium. Also in Australia obviously doubts had arisen concerning their proper generic disposition. C. T. White (Kew Bull. 1932: 42) had already reduced his Aristotelia pubescens to Aceratium. Moreover, all Queensland “Aristotelias” I received from Brisbane had been relabelled“ Aceratium”. As unfortunately no material of these species is represented in the Leyden Herbarium, my study is mainly based on material from the Brisbane and Melbourne Herbaria. This study confirmed that only Aristotelia... |

Taxonomy and distribution: The distribution suggests a tropical origin in West Malesia; however, first appearances are often misleading in this specimen. Closer examination reveals a clustering of relatives in Holland (Backer, 1936), suggesting that this is an aberrant specimen of a large family almost confined to Northwest Europe. This is further supported by the fact that most tropical localities are montane (Leuser, Gede, Papandajan, Idjen, etc.) pointing to a preference for temperate climatic conditions. A peculiarity indicating relictual features is a preponderance of insular localities. Conservative traits can best be perpetuated in isolation. In the secondary Malesian centre the absence of localities in Borneo and New Guinea is striking and is... |

The Hamameli(i)dae comprise, according to the new classification by Thorne, about one quarter of the genera to one third of the families of the Dicotyledonae. The symposium held at the University of Reading, U.K, 22-25 March 1988, highlighted some of the many questions concerning phylogeny and evolution in this group as a contribution to the insight in the main lines of dicotyledonous evolution. The symposium report contains a wealth of information on a wide variety of topics. The phylogenetic position of the Hamamelidae in a wider or narrower sense, or parts thereof, is subject of a number of papers. F. EHRENDORFER reviews the existing diverging interpretations and concludes that the Hamamelidae can be regarded as ancient and partly relictual survivors... |

The International Conference ‘Compositae: Systematics, Biology, Utilization’ held in 1994 inspired the authors, on the suggestion of Dr. K. Ferguson, to publish a book accommodating more general systematic papers on Asteraceae, resulting in the present work. It contains seventeen chapters [in English, French (1), and Spanish (1)], including the Introduction by C. Jeffrey, and is provided with a taxonomic index. Following the Introduction, Jeffrey gives a review of the developments in Asteraceae systematics during the last 20 years, since the conference of 1975. I agree with him that improvements are possible in the use of cladistic analysis in taxonomy, but it seems to me that his review is a bit too negative in this respect. Advances in Compositae... |

In 1960 I made a preliminary analysis of the floristic distribution of the native Phanerogam genera of the Pacific islands, which amounted to 1511 genera in all. The aims of the present work have been to record these more accurately and more critically in detail, especially with regard to native versus introduced, to complete the survey with new records from new explorations made during the interval, and to evaluate new taxonomic literature on Pacific genera. The present list amounts to a total of 1666 genera, as far as known in July 1969, listed in an Appendix. The floristic relationships of the Pacific islands and the surrounding continental areas are established and a hierarchical subdivision of the flora of the Pacific islands based on demarcations in... |

A joint project of the National Herbarium, Addis Ababa University, and the Department of Systematic Botany, Uppsala University, the Ethiopian Flora Project that was launched in 1980, continues to produce results since the first volume (in fact Vol. 3) was published. Many efforts have gone into fund raising, and SIDA, the Swedish International Development Cooperation (earlier SAREC), and the Ethiopian Government have contributed considerable sums of money to achieve the publication of the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea. The editorial team in Uppsala, Addis Ababa and Eritrea has to be congratulated that within two years after the appearance of both volumes of 1995 another issue has left the press. In this extremely rich flora region, with altitudes ranging... |

This new volume of the Handbook of the Flora of Ceylon deals with: Acanthaceae by L.H. Cramer; Rubiaceae by C.E. Ridsdale; Sapindaceae by B.M. Wadhwa & Willem Meijer. Each treatment includes: Family description, keys to the genera and species, and with the taxa: accepted name, synonym(s), description, and notes on distribution, ecology, and specimens seen. On the last page a list of new names is given. However, there are no indices to scientific names and specimens. The taxonomy of the treated genera and species seems to be up to date. Only a few minor errors have been noted. A few illustrations, especially of key characters, would have been helpful. However, this is a useful book on the flora of Sri Lanka. It should go to the bookshelves of those... |

MOGEA, J.P., D. GANDAWIDJAJA, H. WIRIADINATA, R.E. NASUTION & IRAWATI. 2001. Tumbuhan langka Indonesia (Rare plants of Indonesia). 86 pp, illus. Puslitbang Biologi-LIPI. ISBN 979-579-036-6 (In Bahasa Indonesia). This is an illustrated guide to and descriptions of 40 rare or endangered plants of Indonesia. Not surprisingly several species of Aquilaria, mercilessly sought after for their scented wood (gaharu), are included as well as several species of orchids and Rafflesia, of which habitat destruction is the main threat. This is also true for Amorphophallus titanum which, by the way, has been successfully propagated by seeds in the Leiden Botanical Garden, alongside other species of the genus. |

The first substantial contribution of the Rijksherbarium towards the plant geography of Malesia and the Pacific was made by the German born J. G. Hallier in his paper ‘Über frühere Landbrücken, Pflanzen- und Völkerwanderungen zwischen Australien und Amerika’. In this paper he suggested that recent land connections had existed in the tropical Pacific from Japan over Hawaii to California and south to Peru and another connection in the south Pacific. His arguments besides botanical were also ethnographical and linguistic. H.J. Lam was not only responsible for the promotion of taxonomic research. He added chapters on phytogeography to his revisions of the Sapotaceae and Burseraceae. His papers on the subject always had a philosophical quality. He once compared... |

Sericolea is a genus endemic to New Guinea. The relevant literature is surveyed. Descriptions are given of all species and keys provided to the 15 species and all infraspecific taxa accepted. Two species are described as new: S. coodei and S. microphylla. A new subspecies of S. brassii A. C. Sm. is recognized: ssp. carrii. S. arfakensis Gibbs, S. gracilis (Laut.) Schltr., and S. novoguineensis Gibbs reduced by Coode in a recent paper are reinstated and S. glabra Schltr.. also reduced by Coode, is recognized as a variety of S. micans Schltr. Three new varieties are distinguished in S. gaultheria (F. v. M.) Schltr. and one in S. novoguineensis Gibbs. |

BOURDY, G. Une approche de la médicine traditionnelle à Bukittinggi (Sumatra Quest). D.E.A. d’ecologie U.S.T.L. Montpellier. 1984. 55 pp. The results presented in this paper are based one some field work conducted in the Minangkabau region of Bukittinggi (Western Sumatra) during February and March 1984. Traditional medicine is approached through the description of medicinal plants, the way they are utilized, and the people who gather and prescribe them. Data have been collected while interviewing the ’dukuns’ (native doctors). For each medicinal plant synonyms, vernacular names in Bahasa and Minangkabau are given. Voucher specimens of 69 specimens of such medicinal plants were collected and are deposited at MPU. |
