Cold-water coral ecosystems in Cassidaigne Canyon: An assessment of their environmental living conditions ArchiMer
Fabri, Marie-claire; Bargain, Annaelle; Pairaud, Ivane; Pedel, Laura; Taupier-letage, I..
The Cassidaigne canyon is one of the two canyons (together with Lacaze-Duthiers) of the French Mediterranean coast in which cold-water corals have settled and formed large colonies, providing a structural habitat for other species. Nevertheless, the communities settled in the Cassidaigne canyon are physically impacted by discharges of bauxite residues. New information on the distribution of the species Madrepora oculata and the associated species diversity in Cassidaigne canyon was provided by videos and photos acquired in 2013. An area investigated at 515 m depth harbored a high density of small colonies of M. oculata. The water column structure of the area was described by using a CTD transect deployed along the axis of the canyon. High resolution (10 m...

The hydrothermal vent community of a new deep-sea field, Ashadze-1, 12°58'N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer
Fabri, Marie-claire; Bargain, Annaelle; Briand, Patrick; Gebruk, A.; Fouquet, Yves; Morineaux, Marie; Desbruyeres, Daniel.
Ashadze-1 (128 580N 448 510W, 4080 m) on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) is the deepest known ctive hydrothermal vent ield. The first observations on this site were numerous clear and black smokers and surprisingly few nown symbiotic species ominant in other vent areas on the MAR. The species most abundant at Ashadze-1 are those usually ound at the periphery f hydrothermal communities: sea-anemones Maractis rimicarivora and chaetopterid polychaetes hyllochaetopterus sp. ov. This study comprised site mapping and faunal sampling and Ashadze-1 was completely mapped y using the Remote perated Vehicle ‘Victor 6000’ and a new high resolution tool available for deep-sea research. A photo-mapping survey was carried out with a long range optical black and white...

Santa Maria di Leuca Province (Mediterranean Sea): Identification of Suitable Mounds for Cold-Water Coral Settlement Using Geomorphometric Proxies and Maxent Methods ArchiMer
Bargain, Annaelle; Marchese, Fabrice; Savini, Alessandra; Taviani, Marco; Fabri, Marie-claire.
The Santa Maria di Leuca (SML) cold-water coral province (northern Ionian Sea) has the largest occurrence of a living white coral community currently known in the Mediterranean Sea. Madrepora oculata and Lophelia pertusa, identified as marking sensitive habitats of relevance by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, have been observed heterogeneously distributed on the summits of several mounds. This particularly patchy and uneven distribution in addition to their importance for regional biodiversity highlights the need to better understand their environmental preferences and predict their distribution. Bathymetric data (40 m resolution) was used to derive seafloor characteristics. A fine scale index quantifying the landscape elevation...
