These fascicles, the first part of a moss flora of Fennoscandia, comprise five (acrocarpous) orders of the Eubryales. All species and a number of forms and varieties have been included. There are clear dichotomous keys to genera and species. Of each species the original literature, the most familiar synonyms, an excellent description with critical remarks on the differences between allied species and original drawings have been given. Ecology and general distribution have been indicated, with special reference to Scandinavia. In addition there is a glossary of technical terms, which is nearly identical to that in Dixon’s famous Student’s Handbook of British Mosses, though less extensive. Nevertheless it may be doubted whether this book actually fills a... |

This paper deals with the habitat of Cornus suecica in pine and spruce plantations near Wilhelmshaven (N.W. Germany), one of its southernmost localities in Europe. The table of records represents a transect from open pinewood to a dense, mixed pine-spruce-wood. All the shrubs, as well as the herbs and bryophytes of groups 1 obviously prefer the light wood stand, whereas those of groups 2 and especially 3 are most abundant and fertile in dense shade. Cornus suecica and Trientalis europaea show an opposite behaviour with regard to light, and so do the two closely allied Dryopteris species, D. austriaca and D. spinulosa. |

Barkman, J.J.; Noordeloos, M.E.. |
During a long-term mycological investigation of Juniperus communities in north-western Europe by the first author, a small Entoloma species was found, which did not seem to fit with one of the known species of Entoloma with a brownish pileus and bluish stipe, because of the small, almost isodiametrical spores and clamped basidia. The only species which seemed to be related was Entoloma lampropus in the sense of Kühner & Romagnesi (1953). That species however, turned out to be clearly different in a number of characters such as size and shape of spores and structure and pigmentation of the pileipellis (see Noordeloos, 1982). Therefore the collections of this apparently new species were examined by the second author in the course of a critical revision... |

As a reaction to the paper by Geesink (Gorteria 12, 1985: 153-155) it is argued that his method is not very practical, as the number of needle samples required for a full list of species and a reliable measure of their cover degree is extremely high. It is proposed to use the line transect method or long and narrow rectangular plots, both at right angles to the vegetation gradient. |

This paper deals with the flora and vegetation of two small woods in the northern part of the prov. Drente. These woods are comparatively rich in species for the region in question, probably owing to the richer soil. Wood associations present are: Querco-Betuletum, Violo-Quercetum, Stellario-Carpinetum, Carici remotae-Fraxinetum, Pruno-Fraxinetum (not very typical), Macrophorbio-Alnetum, Irido-Alnetum, and Frangulo-Salicetum. The epiphytic vegetation is also discussed. Interesting species, many of which are very rare in this province of the Netherlands, are Salix pentandra, Adoxa moschatellina, Carex sylvatica, Circaea lutetiana, Crepis paludosa, Equisetum sylvaticum, Hypericum pulchrum, Lysimachia nemorum, Sanicula europaea, Scutellaria minor and the... |

The publication of the supplement 1 of the well known and essential reference work of “A Bibliography of Eastern Asiatic Botany” is very welcome. It is a continuation of the original work, which closed with 1936, and extends through 1958. It covers the botanical literature on eastern Asia, as indicated by the title, which comprises China, Japan, Korea, Ryukyu, Mongolia and Soviet eastern Asia, as well as the major published papers appertaining to adjacent areas. It has been prepared on essentially the same pattern as the original volume while the subject index has been treated perhaps in a more thorough manner. The volume contains over 11,000 extensively and carefully annotated entries occupying 414 pages. The work is in English but the titles, papers and... |

This charming and handy book printed on excellent paper, with its numerous clear pictures of well-known Malayan plants, reminds one in many ways of Merrill’s “Plant Life of the Pacific World” (MacMillan 1946, New York), which has perhaps served Prof. Holttum as an example. Its size being only slightly smaller than Merrill’s book and the area covered being very considerably smaller, its descriptions of plants are naturally more detailed; the more so as only a choice has been made, in which the special interests of the author — ferns, orchids, gingers — are evident though not predominant. The plants described are not regionally arranged. The 17 chapters are rather headed by names of life-forms, striking organs, and special habitats. As is pointed out in the... |

Carex trinervis has recently been rediscovered in a locality in the province of Drente, where it was found already in 1953. The author discusses its habitat in the two localities in this province, which are the only recent natural occurrences of this species in the Netherlands outside the coastal dune area. Carex trinervis is most abundant here in open, dry, mobile sand (Corynephoretum, records no. 2262 and 2263), but it was also found in a light pine-wood on inland dunes (record no. 2791). |
