ABSTRACT The Eastern Pacific hawksbill turtle is one of the most threatened management units in the world. In the Colombian Pacific it has been detected in feeding areas and in juvenile and / or sub adult’s stages. Its nesting areas and season are unknown to the country. On February 24th, 2020, the first female hawksbill turtle for the Colombian Pacific was reported, in the Conservation Mosaic of Bahía Málaga. The minimum curved carapace length was 90 cm, the curved carapace length nuchal-tip was 90.5 cm, the curved carapace width was 73.6 cm and its weight was 69 kg. The presence of a female and being the main feeding and residence area for juvenile and sub adult of the species in the Pacific of Colombia makes it essential to continue systematic...

First record of a Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) in the Rosario and San Bernardo Corals National Natural Park, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones

ABSTRACT Between January 23rd and 27th, 2020, a Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) was seen in coastal waters of the Rosario and San Bernardo Corals National Natural Park. This is the first known record of a live animal for the Colombian Caribbean Sea. While it was not possible to establish causality relationships, the present note includes a description of the environmental and oceanographic context associated with sightings. While the Colombian Caribbean, because of its oligotrophy, would not permanently sustain a constant presence of the great baleen whales, its inclusion as part of the potential distribution range for Fin whales is suggested. The current report also highlights the importance and relevance of citizen science, in addition to...

Conservation of the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) in Rincón del Mar, Colombia Boletín de Investigaciones
Restrepo-Garzón,Nicolás; Álvarez-Rodríguez,Rafael Andrés; Ramírez-Gallego,Cristian; Ruíz-Álvarez,Tulio; Barrientos-Muñoz,Karla G..
ABSTRACT The conservation and nesting ecology of the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) are described, as a result of a systematic monitoring between 2018 and 2019 in the municipality of Rincón del Mar, San Onofre, Sucre. Six hawksbill turtle nests were recorded in situ, one nest was poached by humans. The nesting female spawned a total of 761 eggs in five clutches (mean 152.2 ± 15.5 eggs per clutch). Mean hatching success was 78.2 ± 12.4 % and the mean emergence success was 74.7 ± 14.1 % (n = 5). The mean incubation period was 54 ± 7.8 days (n = 4). 591 hatchlings were released into the sea, of which 22 (3.72 %) were rescued and released with the community. In addition, physical measurements of the nests (width, depth, distance to the beach) and...

Sea Turtles in the Bahía Málaga Conservation Mosaic, Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
Barrientos-Muñoz,Karla G.; Heidemeyer,Maike; Ortega-Gordillo,Luis Fernando; Valencia-Díaz,Miller; Hinojosa-Romero,Carlos Andrés; Valencia-González,Santiago; Montaño,Héctor Javier; Diaz granados,Maria Claudia; Caldas,Juan Pablo; Sevilla-Dueñas,Edward Leonardo; Arauz,Randall; Ramírez-Gallego,Cristian.
ABSTRACT The species and sizes of sea turtles present in the Bahía Málaga Conservation Mosaic, Valle del Cauca, were characterized between 2016-2020 through aquatic monitoring and voluntary delivery by native fishermen. The registry of individuals was determined by aquatic monitoring, which was divided into three phases: exploratory sampling, continuous sampling, standardized sampling, plus voluntary deliveries by fishermen in their fishing tasks. A total of 107 hours of effort were used to detect 51 individuals of hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and black (Chelonia mydas) turtles. These results contribute as a baseline for the knowledge of sea turtles as an effective strategy for research and conservation in Bahía Málaga.
