The Effects of Scenic and Environmental Amenities on Agricultural Land Values AgEcon
Wasson, James; McLeod, Donald M.; Bastian, Christopher T.; Rashford, Benjamin S..
Ascribing land value solely to productive capacity does not accurately capture the impact environmental amenities provide on western land prices. Agricultural land prices in Wyoming are estimated using a hedonic price model and Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) data. These GIS measurements include on-parcel wildlife and fish habitat, viewscape attributes and distance to protected federal lands. A feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) approach is used to address both spatial autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity. The estimation is robust and highly significant. Results indicate that amenities as well as productivity are significant in explaining land values for the sample analyzed. Such information is useful for landscape management in the face of...

THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF SNOWMOBILING IN WYOMING: A TRAVEL COST APPROACH WITH MARKET SEGMENTATION AgEcon
Coupal, Roger H.; Bastian, Christopher T.; May, Juliet A.; Taylor, David T..
Little research has been done on the economic benefits of snowmobiling. This study used a cluster analysis and the travel cost method to identify different snowmobiler segments and estimate their respective consumer surplus values. Consumer surplus estimates ranged from $12 to $49 per day for the different segments.

THE CONTRIBUTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL AMENITIES TO AGRICULTURAL LAND VALUES: HEDONIC MODELLING USING GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS DATA AgEcon
McLeod, Donald M.; Bastian, Christopher T.; Germino, Matthew J.; Reiners, William A.; Blasko, Benedict J..
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data are used in a hedonic model to measure the impact of recreational and scenic amenities on agricultural land values. Results indicate agricultural land values are determined by environmental amenities as well as production attributes. Significant amenity variables included scenic view, elk habitat and fishery productivity.

Risk Management for Ag Families: An Extension Model for Improving Family Business Success AgEcon
Bastian, Christopher T.; Nagler, Amy M.; Hewlett, John P.; Weigel, Randolph R..
A risky business environment for agricultural producers coupled with human risk elements unique to family businesses, points to the need for extension programs that integrate traditional risk management concepts into curriculums focused on the potentially unique educational needs of family farm management teams. Results in this paper indicate that a multi-state, grant funded program entitled "Risk Management for Ag Families" had impact and provides a model that traditional risk management education programs could benefit from.

Subsidy Incidence in Agricultural Land Markets: An Experimental Investigation AgEcon
Nagler, Amy M.; Menkhaus, Dale J.; Bastian, Christopher T.; Ehmke, Mariah D..
We use laboratory market experiments to control for market power and social norms in order to evaluate market outcomes associated with subsidy incidence. We estimate the incidence of a stylized agricultural subsidy in laboratory land rental negotiations and compare the market behavior of university students to agricultural professionals. In separate sessions with both subject groups, 21.5 percent of a per-unit subsidy paid to the buyer (tenant) was passed on to sellers (landlords). The consistent treatment effect between students and professionals is encouraging, particularly in the use of experimental laboratory methods for ex ante analyses of agricultural policy impacts.

FORWARD CONTRACT INFORMATION IMPACTS ON PRICING AND PRODUCTION EFFICIENCIES IN A SIMULATED FED CATTLE MARKET AgEcon
Bastian, Christopher T.; Koontz, Stephen R.; Menkhaus, Dale J..
As policy makers strive to maintain competitiveness in agricultural markets, the impacts of altering market information sets must be evaluated. An experiment was designed to assess the price and production impacts of forward contract information. Results suggest that this information reduced price level and dispersion. Production efficiency was improved in the spot market.

WILL MANDATORY PRICE REPORTING IMPROVE PRICING AND PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY IN AN EXPERIMENTAL MARKET FOR FED CATTLE? AgEcon
Bastian, Christopher T.; Koontz, Stephen R.; Menkhaus, Dale J..
Mandatory price reporting legislation will make available to the public on a weekly basis information on terms of trade for forward contracts. The new information will provide marketing intentions details that were previously unavailable to agents in the fed cattle market. An experiment was designed to assess the potential impacts of this new information on price discovery and production efficiency. Results suggest that the proposed new information will reduce price level, reduce price dispersion, and improve production efficiency. Prices may be reduced as information risks are reduced for both buyers and sellers in the fed cattle market. This result may not be popular among sellers in the market.

SUPPLY AND DEMAND RISKS IN FORWARD AND SPOT MARKETS: IMPLICATIONS FOR AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Menkhaus, Dale J.; Bastian, Christopher T.; Phillips, Owen R.; O'Neill, Patrick D..
Laboratory methods are used to investigate the impacts of supply and/or demand risks on prices, quantities traded, and earnings within forward and spot market institutions. Results suggest that the spot or forward trading institution itself has a greater influence on market outcomes than supply/demand risks within the institution.

Determinants of Agricultural Landowners’ Willingness to Supply Open Space Through Conservation Easements AgEcon
Miller, Ashley D.; Bastian, Christopher T.; McLeod, Donald M.; Keske, Catherine M.; Hoag, Dana L..
Open space provides a range of benefits to many people of a community, beyond the benefits that accrue to private landowners. Parks and natural areas can be used for recreation; wetlands and forests supply storm-water drainage and wildlife habitat; farms and forests provide aesthetic benefits to surrounding residents. Moreover, undeveloped land can give relief from congestion. Agricultural lands are an important source of open space, but many of these lands are under great development pressure. One tool that is currently being used to aid in the preservation of open space by landowners is conservation easements. The rate of land protection by state and local land trusts has tripled since the beginning of the decade, and the West is the fastest growing...

SUPPLY AND DEMAND RISKS IN LABORATORY FORWARD AND SPOT MARKETS: IMPLICATIONS FOR AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Menkhaus, Dale J.; Bastian, Christopher T.; Phillips, Owen R.; O'Neill, Patrick D..
Laboratory experimental methods are used to investigate the impacts of supply and/or demand risks on prices, quantities traded, and earnings within forward and spot market institutions. Random demand and/or supply shifts can be as much as 25 percent of the expected equilibrium outcome. Nevertheless, results suggest that the spot or forward trading institution itself has a greater influence on market outcomes than the presence of risk within the trading institutions. Sellers tend to have relatively higher earnings in a spot market than buyers, regardless of the risk. Total surplus, however, generally is greater in a forward market.
