Morphometric and genetic differentiation among populations of Eupemphix nattereri (Amphibia, Anura, Leiuperidae) from central Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Silva,Daniela de M. e; Cruz,Aparecido D. da; Bastos,Rogério P.; Telles,Mariana P. de C.; Diniz-Filho,José Alexandre F..
To assess genetic structure and phenotypic diversity of Eupemphix nattereri Steindachner, 1863, morphometric and molecular analyses were carried out for nine populations from the State of Goiás. A total of 11 morphometric traits were evaluated and genetic information was estimated using RAPD markers. Genetic and phenotypic distances were determined as a function of geographical origin. Correlation among genetic, morphometric, micro, and macroenviromental were analyzed by the Mantel test. Genetic data indicated high levels of genetic diversity (Φst= 0.3) among the nine populations. Mantel tests did not reveal a significant positive correlation between genetic and geographical distances, indicating that locally geographical populations were not genetically...

Breeding activity of Scinax centralis (Anura, Hylidae) in Central Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Alcantara,Mariana B.; Lima,Leôncio P.; Bastos,Rogério P..
From January, 1997 to April, 1998, we studied breeding activity in a population of Scinax centralis Pombal & Bastos, 1996, in the state of Goiás, inside the Cerrado Biome, Brazil. The behavior of males and females in the choruses, the relationships between environmental variables and the presence of individuals, the spatial distribution pattern, amplexus and clutches were analyzed. The breeding season occurred from November to May. The majority of males began to call when they entered the chorus; they were defending their calling sites against other males. We found a positive correlation between the number of females and males in the choruses, but no significant correlation was observed between the operational sexual ratio (OSR, number of...

Vocalizações e interações acústicas em Hyla raniceps (Anura, Hylidae) durante a atividade reprodutiva Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Guimarães,Lorena dall'Ara; Bastos,Rogério P..
The vocalizations of H. raniceps (Cope, 1826) and their functions are described, including an analysis of the influence of temperature, weight, or SVL (snout-vent length) of males on the acoustic parameters. The vocalizations were recorded in three areas in Fazenda Lagoa Grande, Municipality of Pontalina, State of Goiás, central Brazil. Males began their vocalizations just before sunset, extending them, in some cases, to dawn of the following day. The peak of activities happened between 21h and 23h. The height of calling sites varied plenty, being the position horizontal in about 50% of them. Males defended sites in different areas during consecutive nights. Rain and strong winds interrupted the calling activities. Males emitted three vocalizations:...

Reproductive ecology and territorial behavior of Boana goiana (Anura: Hylidae), a gladiator frog from the Brazilian Cerrado Rev. Bras. Zool.
Dias,Tailise M.; Prado,Cynthia P.A.; Bastos,Rogério P..
ABSTRACT Anuran males and females adopt different reproductive and behavioral strategies in different contexts. We investigated the reproductive ecology and territorial behavior of the treefrog Boana goiana (B. Lutz, 1968) from the Brazilian Cerrado. We hypothesized that competitor density/proximity would increase the behavioral responses of B. goiana males, and that mating would be assortative. We also tested if the number of eggs correlates with female size and if there is a trade-off between clutch size and egg size. We conducted two territoriality experiments to test the effects of male size, competitor proximity and competitor density. Larger males called more in the presence of a second male. In the second experiment, the largest males emitted more...

Foam nest in Scinax rizibilis (Amphibia: Anura: Hylidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bastos,Rogério P.; Haddad,Célio F. B.; Pombal Jr,José P..
During the intervals of February 1993 to January 1994 and November 1994 to February 1995, in the southern São Paulo state, we studied the breeding activity of Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann, 1964), the only known hylid species with oviposition in foam nests. The foam nests were constructed by female jumps, during the oviposition. The clutches contained 850-1250 eggs, which were almost black, except for the small clear vegetative pole. The construction of foam nest in S. rizibilis is unique among the other species with this characteristic. The complexity of a foam nest is intermediate, and egg development was faster when eggs were surrounded by foam. It is possible to recognize a progression from less developed structures, represented by the bubble nests of...

How do males of Hypsiboas goianus (Hylidae: Anura) respond to conspecific acoustic stimuli? Rev. Bras. Zool.
Morais,Alessandro R.; Siqueira,Mariana N.; Bastos,Rogério P..
ABSTRACT Acoustic communication plays an important role in the social behavior of anurans. Acoustic signals, which can be used in different contexts such as mate attraction and territory defense, may mediate social interactions among individuals. Herein, we used playback experiments to test whether males of Hypsiboas goianus (Lutz, 1968) change their vocal behavior in response to conspecific advertisement calls. Specifically, we used different field playback experiments in which we modified the time interval between advertisement calls to simulate males with distinct states of motivation (Sequence A and B). We did not observe differences in the acoustic response of males of H. goianus between the two types of field playback experiments. On the other hand,...

The agricultural impact of pesticides on Physalaemus cuvieri tadpoles (Amphibia: Anura) ascertained by comet assay Rev. Bras. Zool.
Gonçalves,Macks W.; Gambale,Priscilla G.; Godoy,Fernanda R.; Alves,Alessandro Arruda; Rezende,Pedro H. de Almeida; Cruz,Aparecido D. da; Maciel,Natan M.; Nomura,Fausto; Bastos,Rogério P.; Marco-Jr,Paulo de; Silva,Daniela de M..
ABSTRACT Amphibians inhabiting agricultural areas are constantly exposed to large amounts of chemicals, which reach the aquatic environment during the rainy season through runoff, drainage, and leaching. We performed a comet assay on the erythrocytes of tadpoles found in the surroundings of agricultural fields (soybean and corn crops), where there is an intense release of several kinds of pesticides in different quantities. We aimed to detect differences in the genotoxic parameters between populations collected from soybeans and cornfields, and between them and tadpoles sampled from non-agricultural areas (control group). Tadpoles collected from ponds located at soybean fields had significantly more DNA damage, followed by tadpoles collected from...

Larvas de Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann) (Anura, Hylidae): avaliando o efeito parental Zoologia
Bastos,Rogério P.; Haddad,Célio F.B..
A controlled experiment, related with the mating system of Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann, 1964), was conducted to assess if larval variation could be due to size of male or its ability to manage an amplexus. Adult individuals were caught during breeding activity (from February 1993 to January 1994), in a temporary pond in the municipality of Ribeirão Branco. São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. The duration of the larval period was not different between tadpoles of large and small males, nor was it different between tadpoles coming from natural or artificial pairs. The reproductive status of the male (if it had managed an amplexus) also did not influence the total length nor the mass of the tadpoles close to metamorphosis. However, tadpoles of larger and...

Vocalizações de Scinax perpusillus (A. Lutz & B. Lutz) e S. arduous Peixoto (Anura, Hylidae), com comentários taxonômicos Zoologia
Pombal Jr.,José P.; Bastos,Rogério P..
Herein, the advertisement and territorial calls recorded from topotypes of Scinax arduous Peixoto, 2002 and S. perpusillus (A. Lutz & B. Lutz, 1939) are described. These two species belong to the Scinax perpusillus species group and show acoustic parameters of territorial calls similar to the catharinae species group, suggesting that they are phylogenetically related. The acoustic parameters of advertisement calls of S. arduous and S. perpusillus suggest a monophyletic origin for the Scinax perpusillus species group.
