This communication presents a research programme concerned with the behaviour of composite materials used in marine structures, including properties, calculation methods, fire behaviour, and fabrication. Conclusions from this project will be presented in the form of recommendation cards which will help French manufacturers to obtain gains in productivity, competitiveness and quality. In the national naval composites project, several series of fire tests have been carried out on epoxy glass pipes and different structural materials commonly used in naval construction. This paper describes the materials tested and the procedures chosen to evaluate the fire reaction properties: flammability (M classification), smoke emission (F classification), and the fire resistance (IMO A 517(13)). The conclusions are given for both the testing procedures and the performance of the composite materials.
