What Motivates Farms to Associate? The Case of Two Competing Czech Agricultural Associations AgEcon
Bavorova, Miroslava; Curtiss, Jarmila.
The study investigates determinants of affiliation with the two strongest associations in Czech agriculture. These represent Agricultural Association grouping large-scale enterprises and Association of Private Farmers, respectively. Our objective is to analyze whether associations with different types of members (large-scale enterprises vs. private farmers) experience different motives for joining or lapsing. Moreover, we investigate if there are characteristics of the associations' members which positively correlate to membership. The results imply that political lobbying is the main entry incentive for both large-scale enterprises and individual farmers. Informal information exchange is a more significant motivation for private farmers than for...

The Glue that Holds Together Supply Chain Networks AgEcon
Bavorova, Miroslava; Dautzenberg, Kirsti; Hanf, Jon Henrich.
As in the agri-food business supply chain networks are evolving in our paper we want to elaborate on managerial questions regarding them. In this context our first aim is to advance the concept of chain management by introducing a more differentiated view. Since many articles highlight the pivotal role of communication the second aim of our paper refers to the role of communication for the management of supply chain networks. Because the agri-food business is still dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises our third aim is to apply our thoughts of chain management on small and medium-sized enterprises.

Business Relationships and B2B Communication in Selected European Agri-food Chains – First Empirical Evidence AgEcon
Fischer, Christian; Hartmann, Monika; Bavorova, Miroslava; Hockmann, Heinrich; Suvanto, Hannele; Viitaharju, Leena; Leat, Philip M.K.; Revoredo-Giha, Cesar; Henchion, Maeve M.; McGee, Claire; Dybowski, Grzegorz; Kobuszynska, Mira.
The roles of business relationships and B2B communication in selected European agri-food chains are analyzed. Using survey data from 1,026 farmers, food processors and retailers in two commodity sectors (meat and cereals) and five different EU countries (Germany, United Kingdom, Ireland, Finland, Poland), we test the empirical relevance of several theory-based determinants of relationship goodness. This is undertaken for the overall dataset and separately for different supply chain stages (farmer-processor versus the processor-retailer relationship) and for the individual countries. The estimation results, derived from structural equation modeling, suggest that the most important contributor to good business relationships is effective communication, with...

Czech Agricultural Associations and the Impact of Membership on Farm Efficiency AgEcon
Bavorova, Miroslava; Curtiss, Jarmila; Jelinek, Ladislav.
The study investigates the efficiency effect of affiliation with the two strongest associations in Czech agriculture. These represent large-scale enterprises and individual farmers, respectively. The efficiency analysis is supplemented by analyses of incentives for associations' membership and farm characteristics decisive for membership choice. The results imply that political lobbying is the main entry incentive. Commercially-oriented individual farms which employ external workers are more likely to choose association membership, as are agricultural enterprises that specialize in livestock production or preserve a high share of employee ownership. We find that association membership has a significant positive impact on farms' performance, especially...

Relationships' sustainability: the case of German wheat-to-bread chain AgEcon
Bavorova, Miroslava; Hockmann, Heinrich.
In recent years there has been a shift in emphasis from transaction-based to more co-operative relationships, as chain members have recognised the need to invest in their supply chain relationships in order to protect their businesses. These non-arm’s-length relationships are capable of generating relational rents for chain partners. The main aim of this paper is to investigate why, in spite of the advantages of the non-arm’s-length relationships, some relationships do not continue. To enhance the understanding of the termination process, we identify and analyse the factors inducing relationship sustainability (continuation) as well as termination in the case of the German wheat-to-bread chain. The study built on the findings of relationship marketing...

ENTWICKLUNG DES TSCHECHISCHEN ZUCKERSEKTORS SEIT 1989 AgEcon
Bavorova, Miroslava.
The breakdown of the planned economy in the Czech Republic induced many changes for the Czech sugar industry. Successful restructuring should foster competitiveness of sugar production and processing. Another target of the sugar sector is its preparation for EU-accession by adjusting to EU market regulations. Consequently, the liberal sugar market policy which was introduced shortly after 1989 was transferred into a system with price and quantity control. Today, this policy differs only in degree from EU market policy. The processes of privatization, restructuring and modernization have been conducted successfully in the nineties. International investors made significant contributions, especially by investing in sugar processing. Despite of a favorable...
