Microplastics are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems, but little information is currently available on the dangers and risks to living organisms. In order to assess the ecotoxicity of environmental microplastics (MPs), samples were collected from the beaches of two islands in the Guadeloupe archipelago, Petit-Bourg (PB) located on the main island of Guadeloupe and Marie-Galante (MG) on the second island of the archipelago. These samples have a similar polymer composition with mainly polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). However, these two samples are very dissimilar with regard to their contamination profile and their toxicity. MPs from MG contain more lead, cadmium and organochlorine compounds while those from PB have higher levels of copper, zinc and... |

The effects of Hg concentrations ranging from 0 (control) to 1024 µg 1-1 upon embryogenesis, survival and growth of Mytilus galloprovincialis mussel larvae were investigated . Embryogenesis was abnormal in 50 % of the individuals at 10µg 1-1. The 48 h LC50 for D-shaped, early umbonate, late umbonate and eyed larvae were 51, 164, 322 and 383 µg 1- 1 respectively. The LC50 was an allometric function of ash-free dry weight with exponent b = 0.60. Larval growth was significantly reduced alter 6 d exposure to 4 µg Hg 1-1 and alter 10 d exposure to 2 µg 1-1. No significant differences in lethal or sublethal sensitivity to Hg were found between M. galloprovincialis and previously studied Crassostrea gigas embryos and larvae. The implications of these findings for... |

The effects of mercury (Hg) concentrations ranging from 0 (control) to 1024 µg 1-1 upon embryogenesis, survival, growth and metamorphosis of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) oyster larvae were investigated. Embryogenesis was abnormal in 50 % of the individuals at 11 µg 1-1 . The 48 h LD50 for D·shaped, umbonate and pediveliger larvae were 33, 115 and 200 µg 1-1 respectively. The increase in LD50 was partially explained by the larval weight increase, although weight-specific tolerance to Hg was higher in smaller larvae. Growth, the most sensitive physiological process studied, was significantly retarded at 4 µg 1-1. The metamorphosis rate was significantly reduced when competent pediveligers were exposed to 64 µg 1-1 for 48 h prior to the addition of the... |

The role of polyethylene microplastics 4–6 μm size (MPs) in the toxicity of environmental compounds to fish early life stages (ELS) was investigated. Marine medaka Oryzias melastigma embryos and larvae were exposed to suspended MPs spiked with three model contaminants: benzo(a)pyrene (MP-BaP), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (MP-PFOS) and benzophenone-3 (MP-BP3) for 12 days. There was no evidence of MPs ingestion but MPs agglomerated on the surface of the chorion. Fish ELS exposed to virgin MPs did not show toxic effects. Exposure to MP-PFOS decreased embryonic survival and prevented hatching. Larvae exposed to MP-BaP or MP-BP3 exhibited reduced growth, increased developmental anomalies and abnormal behavior. Compared to equivalent waterborne concentrations,... |

The standard bivalve embryos-larval bioassay method has been modified for monitoring the water quality in an important mussel culture area, La Rochelle Bay. Fertilised eggs from naturally spawned Mytilus galloprovincialis mussels were incubated for 48 h at 18 ± 1 degree C, in different water samples (five replicates) from the bay and its surroundings. The mean percentages of abnormalities, with the 95 % confidence limit, of controls and different water samples were compared. The method was shown to allow the application of the the bioassay to fresh, brackish and marine waters. The assessment of the water quality of the different tributaries to the Bay and that of freshwaters from intensively cultivated marshes close to it, showed that it varied form toxic... |
