Oblique rifting and segmentation of the NE Gulf of Aden passive margin ArchiMer
Fournier, M; Bellahsen, N; Fabbri, O; Gunnell, Y.
The Gulf of Aden is a young, obliquely opening, oceanic basin where tectonic structures can easily be followed and correlated from the passive margins to the active mid-oceanic ridge. It is an ideal laboratory for studies of continental lithosphere breakup from rifting to spreading. The northeastern margin of the Gulf of Aden offers the opportunity to study on land the deformation associated with oblique rifting over a wide area encompassing two segments of the passive margin, on either side of the Socotra fracture zone, exhibiting distinct morphologic, stratigraphic, and structural features. The western segment is characterized by an elevated rift shoulder and large grabens filled with thick synrift series, whereas the eastern segment exhibits low...

Fault reactivation and rift localization: Northeastern Gulf of Aden margin ArchiMer
Bellahsen, N; Fournier, M; D'Acremont, E; Leroy, S; Daniel, Jm.
[1] The Gulf of Aden and the Sheba spreading ridge ( Gulf of Aden) forms the southern boundary of the Arabian Plate. Its orientation ( 075 degrees E) and its kinematics ( about 030 degrees E divergence) are interpreted as the result of an oblique rifting. In this contribution, a field study in the northeastern Gulf of Aden allows us to confirm the Oligo-Miocene synrift directions of extension and to precise the normal fault network geometry. The synrift extensions are 020 degrees E and 160 degrees E ( possibly in this chronological order); the normal faults strike 070 degrees E, 090 degrees E, and 110 degrees E. The results show that some characteristics are consistent with oblique rifting analogue models, while some others are not. Especially, fault...

Structure and evolution of the eastern Gulf of Aden conjugate margins from seismic reflection data ArchiMer
D'Acremont, E; Leroy, S; Beslier, Mo; Bellahsen, N; Fournier, M; Robin, C; Maia, M; Gente, P.
The Gulf of Aden is a young and narrow oceanic basin formed in Oligo-Miocene time between the rifted margins of the Arabian and Somalian plates. Its mean orientation, N75 degrees E, strikes obliquely (50 degrees) to the N25 degrees E opening direction. The western conjugate margins are masked by Oligo-Miocene lavas from the Afar Plume. This paper concerns the eastern margins, where the 19-35 Ma breakup structures are well exposed onshore and within the sediment-starved marine shelf. Those passive margins, about 200 km distant, are non-volcanic. Offshore, during the Encens-Sheba cruise we gathered swath bathymetry, single-channel seismic reflection, gravity and magnetism data, in order to compare the structure of the two conjugate margins and to reconstruct...
