Growth of the common Cockle Cerastoderma edule : Validation of the periodicity of increment deposition by Calcein marker ArchiMer
Bellamy, Elise; Mahe, Kelig; De Rafelis, Marc; Lartaud, Franck.
Cockle (Cerastoderma edule) growth has not been studied a lot yet and the current approach of counting external ridges in order to make age estimation is limited. Nevertheless, growth is a key parameter for monitoring bivalves populations, which are heavily exploited in French estuaries. The Bay of Somme which is located in the eastern Channel in the north of France, is the first French field of cockles (Cerastoderma edule). In order to improve stock management, it is necessary to increase our knowledge of this species. This study is looking at the growth of the common cockle. In this way, recapture of shells previously marked under calcein marker and then breed in natural conditions in the Bay of Somme, was performed in order to determine the shell...

Growth of the Japanese carpet shell : Validation of increment deposition periodicity by chemical marking ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Bellamy, Elise; D'Amico, Franck; Mahe, Kelig.
Arcachon Bay is the first French field of Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) with an annual production comprised between 500 and 1000 tons in the recent years. In order to improve stock management,an in situ experimentation of chemical marking, using calcein, has been undertaken to validate the periodicity of increment deposition and the optimal conditions of chemical marking in Arcachon Bay. Later on, daily growth rates will be analysed regarding to environmental parameters to increase our knowledge on this species.Manila clam were collected and divided into groups of 80 animals (including control group) which size distribution spread over a large range. Identified groups were marked by immersion in a calcein solution (CAS 1461-15-0), using different...

Elleboode, Romain; Oudard, Clemence; Bellamy, Elise; Penil, Caroline; Mahe, Kelig.

In situ fast marking study of manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Bellamy, Elise; D'Amico, Franck; Caill-milly, Nathalie.
Arcachon Bay, in the southern Bay of Biscay, is the first French production area of Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) with an annual commercial fisheries production around 400 tons in recent years. This bivalve mollusc was introduced into the bay in the 1980s for aquaculture purpose and quickly succeeded in natural settlement so that its high market value led to the progressive establishment of a perennial fishery from the mid-1990s. Local management plans applied to this species are based on a licensing system for the commercial, protected fishery areas and days of prohibited fishing for both commercial and recreational fishermen. A minimum catch size is also prescribed by European regulation, and so growth rates are an important matter in this...

Bellamy, Elise; Lefebvre, Alain; Mahe, Kelig; De Rafelis, Marc.
The bay of Somme is the first French field of cockles (Cerastoderma edule) with a production amounting to 3000 tons per year on average. In order to improve the stock management, it is necessary to increase our knowledge of this species. This study is looking at the growth of the common cockle. First, was carried out a morphometric analysis of the two left and right valves, which has revealed a perfect symmetry of the shell and has allowed us to establish strong correlations among the morphometric parameters. Then, a chemical marking study has been realized with calcein and manganese in order to obtain the exact growth. Calcein marking has showed a fluorescent stria only for an half hour immersion time at 150 mg.L-1. Likewise, the manganese marking has...

Mahe, Kelig; Elleboode, Romain; Bellamy, Elise.

Bellamy, Elise; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Lissardy, Muriel; Mahe, Kelig.

Rabhi, Khalef; Bellamy, Elise; Elleboode, Romain; Roos, David; Aumond, Yoann; Huet, Jerome; Mahe, Kelig.

Growth estimation of Merluccius merluccius off the northern coast of Tunisia ArchiMer
Khoufi, Widien; Dufour, Jean-louis; Jaziri, Hela; Elfehri, Safouene; Elleboode, Romain; Bellamy, Elise; Ben Meriem, Sadok; Romdhane, Mohamed Salah; Mahe, Kelig.
Growth parameters of any species are fundamental for biological or dynamic studies. The quality of the estimation for these parameters directly impacts on species stock assessment and, as a consequence, on fisheries management. In order to improve fishery and species stock management, growth analysis, especially by sex, is recommended. In this study, otoliths were used to estimate growth parameters of Merluccius merluccius Rafinesque, 1810. Hake is well-known as being a species in which otolith interpretation is extremely difficult. To estimate growth parameters, the first daily increment was validated as the tool for age determination. Otolith interpretation was done according to the last results of ICES cooperative research report. In total, a sample of...

Calcein and manganese experiments for marking the shell of the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule): tidal rhythm validation of increments formation ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Bellamy, Elise; Lartaud, Franck; De Rafelis, Marc.
This work focuses on investigating the potential of calcein and manganese as growth markers of the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) in the bay of Somme (France). Recapture of shells, previously marked using a chemical marking and then bred in natural conditions, was performed in order to determine the shell growth patterns. Calcein marking has shown a fluorescent increment in shells after only 30 min immersion time at 150 mg L-1, but also for shells immersed 3 h at 50 mg L-1. Likewise, manganese shell marking was revealed under cathodoluminescence for shells immersed 1 h at 120 mg L-1 as well as for shells which spent 4 h at 90 mg L-1. A numerical analysis performed on each marked cockles has revealed 23 micro-increments between the mark and the ventral...

Bellamy, Elise; Lefebvre, Alain; Mahe, Kelig.
Strong mortalities have occured May, 2008 in the bay of Somme, in two distinct areas named “CH4” and “Voie de Rue”. This document lays out methods and results of the sampling realised in both areas. CH4 as Voie de Rue show strong death rates, respectively 99,74 % (mostly animals size bounded between 20 and 36 mm)and 93,18 % (mostly animals size bounded between 22 and 30 mm), in comparison with the 8,5 % due to natural mortality in reference area. Zoosanitary analysis of the cockle point out that infectious hypothesis would not be the reason of these mortalities.

Relationship between somatic growth and otolith growth: a case study of the ornate jobfish Pristipomoides argyrogrammicus from the coast of Réunion (SW Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Aumond, Yoann; Rabhi, Khalef; Elleboode, Romain; Bellamy, Elise; Huet, Jerome; Gault, M.; Roos, David.
The ornate jobfish Pristipomoides argyrogrammicus Valenciennes 1832 occurs in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean, where it is harvested by small-scale coastal fisheries. Management of this species is hindered by lack of adequate biological data. We sampled a total of 113 individuals from the landings of local artisanal fishers on the island of Réunion (southwestern Indian Ocean), from March 2014 to March 2015. The relationships between two types of body length (total and standard length, cm) and total weight (g) were shown to be significant (p < 0.05). The length–weight relationship was described by a power function, with the scaling factor estimated to be 0.008 and the exponent 3.146. Age was determined using whole otoliths. The von Bertalanffy growth...

Khoufi, Widien; Elleboode, Romain; Jaziri, Héla; El Fehri, Safouène; Bellamy, Elise; Ben Meriem, Sadok; Romdhane, Mohamed; Mahe, Kelig.
Hake (Merluccius merluccius) is widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the most exploited demersal fish. In Tunisia, hake is captured from the north to the south (KHOUFI et al., 2010). Hake is an important species of economic interest and thus the subject of a large literature, but its biology remains insufficiently known, particularly on terms of age and growth estimations, which are essential for stock assessment and management. Otolith microstructure provides a useful tool for age determination of juvenile hake, based on daily increment deposition (ARNERI & MORALES-NIN, 2000; MORALES-NIN et al., 2005; KACHER & AMARA, 2005; BELCARI et al., 2006). Consequently, we studied growth and estimated age, using...

Growth of the oblique-banded grouper (Epinephelus radiatus) on the coasts of Reunion Island (SW Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Rabhi, Khalef; Bellamy, Elise; Elleboode, Romain; Aumond, Yoann; Huet, Jerome; Cresson, Pierre; Roos, David.
The oblique-banded grouper, Epinephelus radiatus (Day, 1968), occurred within the whole Indo- West Pacific where it is harvested by small-scale coastal fisheries. The aim of this study was to estimate the growth of this species at Reunion Island (South-West Indian Ocean) since no study investigated this topic so far. Fifty-seven individuals were sampled in the landings of the French local artisanal fisheries from March 2014 to March 2015. The relationships between two types of body length (total and standard lengths, cm) and total weight (g) were significant (p < 0.05). Total length-weight relationship was described by the following parameters: a = 0.01 and b = 3.098. For each individual, morphometry of the whole otolith was described with several...
