Keel bone damage (KBD) in laying hens is an important welfare problem in both conventional and organic egg production systems. We aimed to identify possible risk factors for KBD in organic hens by analysing cross-sectional data of 107 flocks assessed in eight European countries. Due to partly missing data, the final multiple regression model was based on data from 50 flocks. Keel bone damage included fractures and/or deviations, and was recorded, alongside with other animal based measures, by palpation and visual inspection of at least 50 randomly collected hens per flock between 52 and 73 weeks of age. Management and housing data were obtained by interviews, inspection and by feed analysis. Keel bone damage flock prevalences ranged from 3% to 88%.... |

The potential of free range areas and grassland on organic farms for performing natural behaviour and offering natural feed is not fully utilized yet. Moreover, there are also chances to be picked up for enhancing biodiversity, carbon fixation and mineral cycling. For example, Dutch organic and free range poultry farms together have 2300 ha range area available. In dairy farms this area is much larger. Challenges on goat and cow farms are a natural enrichment of the ration of the animals and making larger areas of the meadows attractive by providing natural shelter against bad weather. We try to ‘solve’ these problems by introducing forestry in animal production and designing silvopastoral systems. Silvopastoral systems, which are the combination of trees... |

From December 2017 onward, including non-organic protein sources in diets for organic poultry will no longer be allowed in the EU. Moreover, in the EU the use of synthetic amino acids in organic diets is prohibited. The main dietary challenge in European organic egg production is to fulfill the protein requirement, especially the methionine (Met) requirement of the hens. Currently available Met-rich ingredients are discussed. In the group of ingredients of plant origin, expelled sunflower seed has a relatively high digestible Met content and is also commonly available. Met content of plant ingredients can be increased by selection of high Met varieties and by specifically breeding on high Met content, e.g. by crossing different breeds. Plant processing... |
