Market milk policies pursued by statutory milk marketing authorities differ between states in Australia. The policy differences are particularly large between Victoria and New South Wales and are thought to produce different levels of farm costs. It was hypothesised that the New South Wales policies produced higher farm costs than the Victorian policies. This hypothesis was tested using three-year data for a set of dairy farms located on both sides of the border in a fairly compact and homogeneous part of the Murray River basin. Hence, farms were studied that operated under different milk policies but similar environmental conditions. The analysis found that the New South Wales policies did lead to higher farm costs. |

The motivation for this study was provided by the interest currently being expressed in the effects of rising wage rates and other factors on the employment levels in various industries in Australia. An attempt is made to examine a number of key factors affecting the demand for labour in a major subsector of Australian agriculture. Using the average farm-firm approach, a time-series econometric model of the demand for hired labour for Australian sheep farms is developed and estimated. Major findings on the determinants of labour demand are discussed, together with their policy implications. |

This study of poultry meat supply and demand responses has two objectives. The first is to help meet the needs of the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics for models for its commodity outlook and other work. The second objective is to quantify the effects on the poultry meat sector of a recent significant change in the domestic feed wheat marketing policy. The paper commences with a review of changes in the poultry meat sector since about 1970, including a description of the new feed wheat policy and its relevance to the poultry sector. The review forms a basis for the formulation, estimation and interpretation of an econometric model of poultry meat supply and demand. |
