Gasset, Eric; Aubry, J.p.; Blancheton, Jean-paul.

Long-term effects of moderate elevation of oxidation–reduction potential on European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in recirculating aquaculture systems ArchiMer
Li, Xian; Przybyla, Cyrille; Triplet, Sebastien; Liu, Ying; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
The long term effects of moderate elevation ORP (oxidation–reduction potential) around 300–320 mV on the growth, hematological parameters and the ability of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) to react against bacterial infection was studied in recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs). Two RASs, one with a moderate ozonation (RAS-O3) and a control (RAS-C) were used in this experiment. After 60 days, seabass reared in the RAS-O3 were more able to react against a Vibrio anguillarum infection. It was in spite of the fact that seabass in the RAS-O3 showed decreased feed intake, feed conversion rate, growth rate and modified hematological parameters compared with the fish in RAS-C. It is obvious that an ORP level of 300–320 mV is too high for seabass to...

An approach to co-construct sustainable development indicators in aquaculture ArchiMer
Rey-valette, Helene; Clement, O; Aubin, Joel; Mathe, Syndhia; Chia, Eduardo; Legendre, Marc; Caruso, D; Mikolasek, Olivier; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Slembrouck, J; Baruthio, Aurele; Rene, Francois; Levang, Patrice; Morissens, Pierre; Lazard, Jerome.
It cannot be said that aquaculture has ignored sustainable development (SD), judging by the number of standards, guides and indicators devoted to it, produced mainly under the aegis of international organizations such as FAO, The European Union and sorne NGOs. However, these continue to be perceived in large measure as constraints rather than as shared objectives by actors. Faced with this situation, which is not specific to aquaculture but on the contrary quite general regardless of sector, context or scale, the authors seek to propose a generic approach that through a collective process, i.e. a co-construction, promotes the implementation and appropriation of SD. What makes this approach original is not only the participatory nature of the construction,...

Blancheton, Jean-paul; Fuchs, Jacques; Lacroix, Denis; Lacroix, Nicole; Lemercier, Philippe; Marin, Jean; Antoine, Loic.

The 'new' European fish culture systems: Recirculating systems, offshore cages, integrated systems ArchiMer
Blancheton, Jean-paul; Bosc, Pierre; Hussenot, Jerome; Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Romain, David.
Over the last few decades, European fish culture was developed mainly as a intensive monospecific activity. In most countries, marine aquaculture cannot continue to develop on the shore line where it first settled due to high competition with other activities. It has now to move either offshore or into recirculation systems located in less occupied spaces. Fresh water availability and impact of fish production farms on the environment are strongly restraining the development of the activity, which is even declining in some countries such as France. Recirculation systems make it possible to decrease water consumption and facilitate waste treatment. Their economical feasibility is being demonstrated and they offer an alternative to developing fish farms....

The new sustainable development data repository requires new analysis grids, in particular for factors accounted for in productive system typologies. This paper, based on the aquaculture example, analyses the diversity in aquaculture systems with respect to sustainable development. Various typologies are obtained by evaluating structural and functional approaches integrating variables related to production and regulation systems and to the territorial insertion of fish farms. Categories have been defined on a scale based on a set of five sites, which are representative of a wider range of aquaculture systems. Use of these categories goes beyond the local typologies and prepares a generic meta-typology classification for the systems. This generic...

The effect of density on sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) performance in a tank-based recirculating system ArchiMer
Sammouth, Sophie; Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Gasset, Eric; Lemarie, Gilles; Breuil, Gilles; Marino, Giovanna; Coeurdacier, Jean-luc; Fivelstad, Sveinung; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Sea bass (Dicentrarchus tabrax) (135 +/- 4 g) were reared under tank-based recirculating aquaculture system for a 63-day period at four densities: 10, 40, 70, 100 kg m(-3). Fish performance, stress indicators (plasma cortisol, proteonemia plus other blood parameters-Na+, K+, glucose, pH, total CO2- and water quality were monitored. At the end of the 63-day period, resistance to infection was also studied by a nodavirus challenge. A 25-day test was performed on fish from two extreme densities (10 and 100 kg m(3)) and one intermediate density (40 kg m(3)). With regards to the different density treatments, there was no significant difference between the daily feed intake (DFI) and the specific growth rate (SGR) up to a density of 70 kg m(-3). No significant...

The use of high rate algal ponds for the treatment of marine effluent from a recirculating fish rearing system ArchiMer
Pagand, Pascal; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Lemoalle, J; Casellas, C.
A high rate algal pond (HRAP) system was used to treat effluent from a recirculating sea water aquaculture system in southern France. Dicentrarchus labrax L. were farmed at a high density, with effluents containing an average of 10 mg L-1 dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and 1.3 mg L-1 reactive phosphorus (RP). On a yearly basis, the algal pond removed 59% of the dissolved nitrogen and 56% of the phosphorus input, which was converted into 3.3 kg DW m(-2) algae. Green macroalgae were dominant throughout the year and the algal biomass mirrored the seasonal changes in daily irradiance and temperature. This first year study supports the possibility of treating marine aquaculture wastes using HPAPs, although conditions will have to be found to mitigate the...

High-rate algal pond treatment for water reuse in an integrated marine fish recirculating system: effect on water quality and sea bass growth ArchiMer
Deviller, Genevieve; Aliaume, Catherine; Franco, Miguel; Casellas, Claude; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
A high-rate algae pond (HRAP) was tested as a second loop of water treatment in a recirculating fish rearing system to reduce water requirements and nutrient discharge levels. Three duplicated groups of sea bass (mean initial body weight 3 5 I I g) were reared under different system conditions (flow-through system, recirculating system and recirculating system with HRAP) for I year. Fish survival rate was higher in the system with HRAP, and their mean body weight was statistically higher (p<0.05) during the month of maximal climatic conditions for algae photosynthesis. After 266 days of experiment, mean fish weight was significantly higher (p<0.05) in the flow-through system than in the recirculating systems. Final fish weight was 15% higher in the...

High rate algal pond treatment for water reuse in a marine fish recirculation system: Water purification and fish health ArchiMer
Metaxa, Elisabeta; Deviller, Genevieve; Pagand, P; Alliaume, C; Casellas, C; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Regardless of the degree of closure of a recirculation system, effluents are produced and replacement water is needed, which limits the possibility of locating a seawater production system away from the shoreline. At the Palavas Ifremer station, in the south of France, a High Rate Algal Pond (HRAP) was operated during several years to treat the effluent from a recirculating aquaculture system before reusing it. The effect of the HRAP-treated water on the recirculation system and on the fish was investigated and the optimal algae growing conditions were defined. The experiments were carried out in three rearing systems: one flow through, one recirculating and one recirculating with a HRAP. The water flow rate, temperature, pH and salinity conditions were...

Comparison of two methods for evaluating waste of a flow through trout farm ArchiMer
Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Boujard, Thierry; Aubin, Joel; Moutounet, Yves; Przybyla, Cyrille; Belaud, Alain.
European water legislation enforces increasingly restrictive measures with regards to reduction of water consumption and waste emission in order to minimise the potential environmental impact of the agro industry sector. Fish farms are particularly concerned, but legislation covering effluent discharge varies significantly from country to country. However, recommendations and directives from institutional, national or regional bodies suggest the enforcement of increasingly strict waste reduction measures and the development of waste treatment. Before treatment, it is necessary to evaluate waste production in terms of composition and quantity. The waste quantification methods used today for fish culture systems are either based on direct measurements of...

Kara, Mohamed Hichem; Lacroix, Denis; Sadek, Sherif; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Rey-valette, Helene; Kraiem, Mejdeddine.
This paper presents the evolution of aquaculture in North Africa during the 20 last years, and the assets and bottlenecks for each country. This work uses the results of the European project Aquamed (2011-2013). The analysis of the evolutions of this sector, including research and development allows to establish a diagnosis on the strengths and the weaknesses in the four countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt). The retrospective analysis helps in identifying solutions for a more sustainable development. It also contributes to select priorities for action in a long-term vision (2035). This double overview, on the past and the future, should help decision-makers and experts to identify the best politics for a sector, which has a high potential in the...

Towards environmentally sustainable aquaculture: Comparison between two trout farming systems using Life Cycle Assessment ArchiMer
Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Aubin, Joel.
Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) was applied to evaluate the global environmental impact of two scenarios of trout production systems based on the operational information from an operational farm using a flow through system (FFF) and an experimental pilot low head recirculating system (RSF) located on the same site. The main differences between the environmental balances of the two systems were relative to water use, eutrophication potential and energy use. Independently of the system used, feed is the key indicator in determining the environmental balance (notwithstanding eutrophication potential and water dependence) monitored by fish production, chemical products, buildings and energy consumption. Consequently, when considering the RSF with a lower feed...
