The mating act in Gephyromantis liber and in other species of this genus differs from all other mating behaviour patterns known in Anura. The male settles with the ventral side of his thighs on the shoulders of the female, and oviposition starts without delay. The assumption is made that the femoral glands of the male play a rôle in the short mating contact. G. liber is a small arboreal frog, which is widely distributed in the Malagasy central Highlands. During the rainy season the eggs are deposited in a gelatinous mass on leaves overhanging shady small shallow puddles, in which the hatching larvae drop. The embryo does not develop external gills, and hatches by the time the spiracle and the horny beak are present. The tooth formula of the full grown... |

In this paper, tadpoles belonging to three related groups of Malagasy frogs are described; both the Dyscophinae and the Cophylinae are subfamilies of the Microhylidae, while the Scaphiophryninae are alternatively assigned to this subfamily or to the Ranidae. The larvae were reared up to the juvenile stage in order to classify them. The tadpole of Dyscophus quinquelineatus (Dyscophinae), the first to be described within the genus, is of the microphagous microhylid type; it has a median spiracle, neither denticles nor beak or papillae, the nostrils do not appear until shortly before the metamorphosis, and the forelimbs develop behind the branchial chambers. The tadpole of Pseudohemisus granulosus (Scaphiophryninae), the first to be described within the genus... |

The colouration in life, some tadpoles and some mating calls of several species of the genus Heterixalus Laurent, 1944, are described. The following taxonomic changes are proposed: Heterixalus rutenbergi (Boettger, 1881), comb. nov. (from Hyperolius); Heterixalus betsileo (Grandidier, 1872) is a valid species (syn. Hyperolius renifer Boettger, 1881); Megalixalus boettgeri Mocquard, 1902, is removed from the synonymy of Heterixalus tricolor (Boettger, 1881). The occurrence of Hyperolius Rapp, 1842, in Madagascar is not confirmed. |
