Collection of microalgae strains and initial and intermediate production of Nannochloropsis oculata (Eustigmatophyceae) under controlled laboratory conditions. Microalgae, as primary producers of the marine trophic pyramid, make up the first link of the food chain in the aquatic environment. In aquaculture, they are the basis of the whole production of marine fish larvae food such as rotifera, copepods and artemias. Within the “Experimental Mariculture and Biology” Program, at the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), the culture technology of red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) and flounder (Paralichthys orbignyanus) that requires production of microalgae to obtain larvae and juveniles of both species is being developed.
