| Økologisk husdyrproduktion i EU er underlagt fælles EU-regler. De nationale be-stemmelser og tolkninger af reglerne varierer ikke desto mindre betydeligt mellem de forskellige EU-lande. Da produktionsvilkårene også er meget forskellige på tværs af Europa, ses stor diversitet i økologiske driftsformer inden for ikke mindst økologisk svineproduktion. Der er kun begrænset viden om, hvad forskellige driftsformer og produktionsvilkår betyder for de økologiske grises sundhed og velfærd. | Forskellige økologiske sobesætninger døjer typisk med de samme sundheds- og velfærdsproblemer, men med en række nuancer. Det er resultatet af en spørgeskemaundersøgelse om dyrevelfærd i økologisk sohold med deltagelse af 53 økologiske svineproducenter fra Danmark, Sverige, Holland og England. 56 % af producenterne rapporterede, at de havde problemer med pattegrise-dødelighed, oftest på grund af ihjellægning af grise. Infektionssygdomme hos de fravænnede grise var ikke et stort problem i Sverige og England, hvor grisene hyppigt er udendørs. Derimod så de hollandske producenter lungebetændelse hos de fravænnede grise, mens de danske grise havde større problemer med diarre. Klovlidelser var ikke som frygtet et generelt problem. |

| Forekomsten af sundheds- og velfærdsproblemer er sandsynligvis anderledes i økologiske besætninger sammenlignet med konventionelle produktionssystemer. Forbedret management i den enkelte besætning kan reducere problemerne, og for at sikre produktsikkerhed og et højt sundhedsniveau hos dyrene er det nødvendigt at kunne kontrollere og vurdere risikofaktorerne i en besætning. Det igangværende FØJO II projekt (MANORPIG) søger at udvikle strategier til kontrol af udvalgte sundheds- og velfærdsproblemer samt zoonoser i den økologiske sobesætning. | Sixty organic pig producers from Denmark, UK, the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden have completed a questionnaire concerning health and welfare problems in organic sow herds. Half the farmers perceived they had a problem with piglet mortality. The most common cause of death was crushing of piglets by the sow, but also piglets that were weak at birth and shortage of milk in the sow caused problems in many herds. Weaning diarrhoea concerned 25 % of the farmers, mainly in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands; and respiratory diseases caused prob-lems in 43 % of the farms, especially in the Nether-lands. | Introduction Organic pig production is still a small-scale produc-tion, achieving, however, increased interest by con-sumers who are concerned about the conventional production method. The EU-Regulation (EEC-No. 1804/1999) on organic livestock production, now replaced by EEC-No 834/2007, was introduced to provide a framework ensuring living conditions for organic livestock to be better than those in conven-tional systems and to harmonize the rules across member states. | Prior to a European prevalence survey of intestinal parasites of organic pig herds it was decided to introduce one common technique for faecal egg counts and to compare its execution at all involved laboratories to ensure data compatibility. It was clearly shown that avoid confounding variation it is extremely important not only to use identical techniques but also to implement the technique in exactly the same way. |

| Productive performance of organic pig farms is lower compared to conventional farms, but only very few data exist. Better knowledge of the productivity of organic herds regarding litter size at birth, piglet losses around birth and during lactation, as well as housing and management conditions should help to identify critical points and hence to improve the situation. | Søers og pattegrises brug af pilebevoksning i farefolde med pil er undersøgt i både sommer- og vinterperiode i to økologiske sobesætninger. Dyrenes ophold og adfærd i pilen er afdækket gennem adfærdsobservationer på både søer og kuld af pattegrise. Om sommeren benyttede såvel søer som pattegrise efter 1-uges alderen hyppigt pilebevoksningen til hvileområde og skjul, men også diegivning og eksplorationsadfærd foregik i pilen. Dyrene opholdt sig i højere grad uden for hytten sammenlignet med søer og pattegrise på farefolde uden pil. Søer med spæde pattegrise brugte ikke i samme grad pilen men opholdt sig hovedsageligt i hytten. Om vinteren syntes pilebevoksningen ikke at have en "merværdi" for dyrene i forhold til almindelige farefolde. |

| Interviews and on-farm assessments were conducted in a total of 101 organic pig farms in different European countries (Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden) to gain knowledge about farm management and health status of organic pigs in Europe. 66 farms kept at least one age group outdoors while 35 farms kept their pigs exclusively indoors, for the most part with a concrete outside run. Housing and feeding conditions were characterised by a large heterogeneity within and between European countries.
