The orientation of the Saculinidae (Crustacea Rhizocephala) in respect to their hosts Naturalis
Boschma, H..
Delage (1884) and Smith (1906), two authors who published extremely important contributions on Rhizocephala, largely differed in their views concerning the morphology of these parasites. Both regarded the surface of the parasites touching the thorax of the host as the left side, but in other respects they were of a quite different opinion. Delage's (1884) ideas on the morphology of Sacculina were, as he stated himself, different from those of previous authors. In his opinion the dorsal region of the parasite is on the left side of the host, the ventral region on the right side of the host. The left side of the parasite touches the sternum of the crab, the right side the abdomen. As a matter of fact then the region of the stalk must be regarded as the...

Rhizocephalan parasites of the crab Pugettia brevirostris, with notes on Sacculina gracilis Naturalis
Boschma, H..
The present paper deals with two parasites of the crab Pugettia brevirostris, the one representing the new species Sacculina reinhardi, the other identified with Sacculina muricata. The excrescences of the external cuticle of Sacculina reinhardi are similar to those of Sacculina gracilis. For a comparison of S. gracilis with S. reinhardi some additional data of previously described specimens of S. gracilis are here noted and figured, to show that certain characters of this species are constantly different from the corresponding peculiarities in the only available specimen of S. reinhardi. Sacculina reinhardi nov. spec. 1) U. S. Bureau of Fisheries, Northwestern Pacific Cruise, 1906, in entrance of Uraga Strait, Gulf of Tokyo, Japan, 70 fms., October 26,...

Stylasterina in the collection of the Paris museum : III. Stylaster flabelliformis (Lamarck) Naturalis
Boschma, H..
The last description of the coral Stylaster flabelliformis (Lamarck) appeared a century ago (Milne Edwards & Haime, 1857, p. 129). The cited authors listed in the genus Stylaster six at the time well-defined species, two of which, S. flabelliformis and S. gracilis, were characterized by having the "calices" exclusively on the lateral surfaces of the branches. From a modern point of view in the cited publication the specific characters were little clearly defined, consequently Broch (1936, p. 11) had to observe that the identity of S. flabelliformis is uncertain. Fortunately the species is well represented in the collections of the Paris Museum; during a visit in September, 1954, I made notes on the large colonies, while some small fragments were taken...

Sacculina leptodiae Guér.-Gan., a parasite of three different crabs Naturalis
Boschma, H..
The description of Sacculina leptodiae by Guérin-Ganivet (1911) was based on specimens infesting the crab Xantho exaratus (H. M. E.). Other specimens, identified as S. leptodiae or otherwise, have been mentioned in literature, so that the synonymy may be given as follows. Sacculina leptodiae Guérin-Ganivet, 1911 Sacculina leptodiae Guérin-Ganivet, 1911. Type specimens on Xantho exaratus (H. M. E.) from Jibuti, Gulf of Aden, and from Grande Comore. Notes on three species of the genus Sacculina Naturalis
Boschma, H..
One of the specimens dealt with in the present paper has been described in previous papers, in which it appeared under three different names, all of which for different reasons eventually proved to be erroneous. The present identification as Sacculina cordata Shiino at last seems to be definite. The second specimen, as the first from the material collected by the Siboga Expedition, belongs to the species Sacculina papposa V. K. & B., of which up till now the type specimen only was known; the parasite dealt with here is interesting because the excrescences of its external cuticle are of a structure slightly different from that of the corresponding parts in the type; moreover, in this specimen retinacula were found, yielding an additional character for...

On specimens of the coral genus Tubastraea, with notes on phenomena of fission Naturalis
Boschma, H..
Among the material brought together in the West Indies by Dr P. Wagenaar Hummelinck there are some coral colonies of the genus Tubastraea that are interesting from various points of view, in the first place because this genus of Madreporaria has but recently become known to occur in the West Indies. Vaughan & Wells (1943, p. 239) note as range of distribution of the genus Panamá, Indo-Pacific, Gulf of Guinea, and the West Indies. As I did not succeed in finding data in the previous literature on the occurrence of Tubastraea in the West Indian area, I wrote to Dr J. W. Wells, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, who kindly informed me that the statement given above was based on otherwise unpublished recent finds of material from off Puerto Rico, whilst...

The described species of the family Sacculinidae Naturalis
Boschma, H..
I. INTRODUCTION AND KEYS OF GENERA AND SPECIES The present paper contains the data concerning the synonymy and the figures of the Sacculinidae, compiled from the various publications dealing with species of the family, to bring the scattered data together in a general survey. The keys contain all the species that are sufficiently known to be considered distinct ; unfortunately a number of described species could not be incorporated in these keys for want of definite data concerning their structure. The keys are highly artificial, they do not give an idea of the natural subdivisions of the genera, but are only meant to show that the characters of the recognized species allow of an arrangement leading to a ready identification. If these keys are being used...

The specific characters of Sacculina rotundata Miers and Sacculina yatsui nov. spec Naturalis
Boschma, H..
In a previous paper (Boschma, 1935) I made some remarks concerning the parasites of Pachygrapsus crassipes Randall from Japan, viz., Sacculina confragosa and the specimens mentioned then under the name Sacculina rotundata. The latter parasite, indeed, shows some resemblance to S. rotundata, but a closer examination of its characters shows that it is specifically distinct from this species. It appears to be a new species which is described in the present paper as Sacculina yatsui. Moreover the results of a more or less detailed investigation on Sacculina rotundata are given here to show the differences between the two species. Sacculina yatsui nov. spec. Sacculina rotundata: Boschma 1935. Material examined: Sagami Bay, 1901, Dr. Haberer. Zool. Museum...

The coral Montipora monasteriata (Forsk.) in the Fiji Islands Naturalis
Boschma, H..
During a visit to the Fiji Islands, of about three weeks in March, 1949, through the kind help of Mr. Harold Gatty at Suva I had the opportunity to make trips to various coral reefs. On one of these trips, on March 18, to the reef of Tomberua, a small island to the south east of the large island Viti Levu, I collected an extensive material of various species of the genus Montipora. Among this material there is one colony of Montipora monasteriata (Forsk.), apparently the first to be reported from the Pacific region, as Crossland (1941, p. 35) states: "It is remarkable that the species, which is not uncommon in the Red Sea, has not appeared in any collection outside this area except in Gravier's from the Gulf of Aden." Forskål's (1775) short description of...

The Stylasterine coral Allopora stellulata (Stewart) Naturalis
Boschma, H..
The description of Stylaster stellulatus Stewart was based on a specimen obtained at Tahiti, the coral was stated to be extremely rare, and only found at one small island in the neighbourhood. The description contains all the peculiarities for a specific definition of the coral, the salient points of this description are here mentioned, partly in Stewart's own words (1878, pp. 41-43). "The corallum is of a bright rose colour, especially in the younger branches, the older parts being often more pale. The branches are usually quite cylindrical, though occasionally flattened at their tips; the general appearance being much like that of S. sanguineus, but it has a bluer rose tint, and is at once distinguished by the minute size of its calicles (1/67 of an...

On two different growth-forms of Merulina laxa, Dana Naturalis
Boschma, H..
It is a well-known fact that in many species of reef-corals the form of different colonies is largely subject to external influences that affected it during its growth. Not only in different colonies is this variability found, but also parts of the same colony may offer a striking contrast when compared with one another. One of the causes that modify the growth-form of various colonies of reef-corals, especially of the branching ones, is the action of the waves that roll in upon the reef after they have been more or less dissolved at the edge. These waves constantly sweep over the tops of the coral-colonies so as to prevent them to grow in height above a certain level. Together with the larger colonies whose tops are constantly in contact with the waves...

The Rhizocephala of the Pacific Naturalis
Boschma, H..
The Rhizocephala, parasites of Crustacea of various orders, form a small group of animals, of which the comparatively small number of published records become rather easily accessible in a complete manner, so that in this respect the group lends itself for a survey of the occurrence and the distribution of the species in the Pacific area. The available data are widely scattered in the literature (cf. references at the end of the present paper), most papers dealing with one or a few species, some publications containing data on animals of the group from a distinct geographical area, others again giving the results of an examination of the material of the group preserved in a certain museum. A survey of the available data proves that in certain regions of...

The Rhizocephala of the Leiden Museum Naturalis
Boschma, H..
In the paper on the Rhizocephala of the Siboga Expedition ( VAN KAMPEN and BOSCHMA 1925) besides the material collected during this expedition a number of specimens from other collections have been described. Among these there were a few from the collection of the Leiden Museum ('s Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie). The rich collection of Crustacea in this Museum, however, contains a much larger number of specimens infested with Rhizocephala than those described in the cited paper, as turned out after an inspection of the whole collection. Alltogether 35 specimens, including the 10 specimens described in the cited paper, could be found. The taxonomy of the Rhizocephala is a rather difficult problem, which can be solved only after the study of a...

Notes on some Indopacific species of the genus Sacculina Naturalis
Boschma, H..
For many years the species problem in the Sacculinidae has been a matter of controversies. Kossmann's (1872) paper was of fundamental importance, because in his descriptions of a great number of new species, chiefly from the Philippine Islands, he derived the specific characters from the anatomical peculiarities as well as from the excrescences of the external cuticle. Later investigators for many years dealt with European material only, in which specific characters are far less apparent than in tropical Sacculinidae, so that their opinions concerning specific differences were often based on principles instead of on facts. This applies to the papers by Giard and Bonnier (Giard, 1886, 1887, 1888; Bonnier, 1887; Giard & Bonnier, 1887, 1890), in which the...

Über den Trichterapparat der Larven von Megalophrys Montana Kuhl Naturalis
Boschma, H..

Further Notes on the Ampullae of Millepora Naturalis
Boschma, H..
After a prolonged scrutiny of numerous colonies of Millepora in the collections of various museums I found, besides a number of colonies with open ampullae, ten specimens possessing ampullae with their coverings of a trabecular network. The chief details of these ampullae were described in a previous paper (Boschma, 1949 a). Afterwards I had the good fortune to obtain material of different species of Millepora from six localities showing ampullae in an undamaged state. These ampullae are figured and described in the present paper. I am greatly indebted to Mr. Harold Gatty of Suva, who enabled me to visit coral reefs in the Fiji Islands during the time I stayed in this locality (March, 1949). I want to thank Dr. C. H. Edmondson, curator, Bernice P. Bishop...

Rhizocephala from New Guinea : IV. Notes on Parasites of various Crabs Naturalis
Boschma, H..
The parasites dealt with in the present paper were brought together by Dr. L. D. Brongersma, Dr. L. B. Holthuis, and Dr. M. Boeseman during their recent voyage to New Guinea1). One of the specimens had to remain unidentified on account of lack of distinct characters; the other parasites proved to belong to previously described species, often presenting peculiarities leading to additional data of specific variation. Sacculina brevispina Van Kampen & Boschma No. 1323B. Biak Island, reef West of Sorido, 1 specimen on Phymodius ungulatus (H. Milne Edwards), February, 1955. The type specimen of Sacculina brevispina is a parasite of the crab Actaea hirsutissima (Rüppell) from Sanguisiapu in the Sulu Islands (Van Kampen & Boschma, 1925, p. 27). The...

The Species of the genus Sacculina (Crustacea Rhizocephala) Naturalis
Boschma, H..
The genus Sacculina was founded by Thompson (1836), who described the species Sacculina carcini, the parasite of the shore crab. A second species, Sacculina inflata, was described by Leuckart (1859). Anderson (1862) gave a description of a third species, Sacculina triangularis, and published important notes on the anatomy of this and other species; afterwards it proved hat S. triangularis morphologically is not distinct from S. inflata. Hesse (1867) gave names to two Sacculinidae on different crabs. Of these one (Sacculinidia gibbsii) is a synonym of Sacculina carcini; the characters of the other species, named by Hesse Sacculinida Herbstia nodosa, are unknown. Kossmann (1872) described a large number of species of the genus from the Philippine Islands; he...

Double Teeth in the Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus L.) Naturalis
Boschma, H..
Recently a fairly large number of teeth of the sperm whale were acquired for the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historic These teeth were picked out from an extensive material of sperm whale teeth collected in the Antarctic region and preserved by the whalers for their commercial value. Together with Dr. A. B. van Deinse at Rotterdam the author spent two days in selecting from the available material those specimens which showed peculiarities of some kind so that they might prove interesting for further examination. I want to thank Dr. Van Deinse here for his kind help in saving so many peculiar specimens for scientific purposes. Double teeth of the sperm whale are not unknown, but as far as I am aware only two instances have been described,...
