For a few years, the global stock of oysters from natural deposits has stayed constant in the oyster rivers of the Morbihan. In 1928, there was an average, per 100 sq. meters, of 190 oysters on the deposits of the Auray River (Sainte Avoye, Marie, Plessis, Rosnarho, Loqueltas, Rohello, Ours), and of 2 oysters on those of the Trinité River (Saint-Jean, Lac, Pierre-Jaune, Réserve, Cuhan). In October 1929, the density of the deposit was of 175 in the first river and of 2 in the second. |

In summer, an abnormal mortality is often observed in the ponds and depuration storage tanks of the oyster farms supplied with a water which is renewed at long intervals. Farmers usually blame this on an excessive heat, but one may think that this mortality could be caused by an impoverishment in dissolved air of an overheated and stagnant water. At the request of M. Hinard, general sanitary inspector, we conducted an experiment in order to find out the role played by each of these causes: water temperature and ventilation level. |

In 1921, the Marine Fisheries Scientific Office carried out some observations on the water temperature and density, in the Morbihan region, in order to precise the influence of these two factors on the reproduction of oysters. The interesting perspectives raised by the first results, as well as the good will of some enlightened farmers, lead the Office to continue its research and to develop each year its original plan (1). In 1927, the studies were intensified again. Their carrying out was made easier by: M. Biguet, Administrator of the Inscription Maritime (Marine registration) in Auray, and M. Bléjean, Administrator in Vannes, who had their fishing guards measure the water temperature and fish some plankton for us; M. Raphenne, head of the oyster... |
