Change of the weed seed bank during the first four years of a five-course crop rotation with organic vegetables 21
Sjursen, Helge; Brandsæter, Lars Olav; Seljåsen, Randi.
In a five-course rotation with organic vegetables (white cabbage, carrot and onion) the weed seed bank was reduced the year after two continuous years with red clover, mainly because of mowing of the second year red clover. The year after the weedy ribbed meliot the weed seed bank increased.

Cut fallow to replace black fallow in an organic production system 21
Bergkvist, Göran; Mangerud, Kjell; Magnuski, Ewa; Brandsæter, Lars Olav.
Couch grass (Elymus repens) has large impact on yield and management strategies in temperate areas of the world. The control is to a large extent based on repeated soil cultivations in organic farming. Our aim was to investigate methods to improve the competitive effect of white clover by management. The hypothesis was that cutting (fragmentation) of the rhizomes by making slits in the soil by a spade (spading) would increase the number of couch grass shoots, thus improve the effect of repeated mowing. We conclude that Cross cutting to 10 cm could reduce the amount of rhizomes, but that the effect is variable. We also conclude that the cross cutting do not improve the effect of mowing. Cross cutting reduce the amounts of couch grass shoots.

Ugrasharving i korn 21

Activities of the NJF working group on Perennial Weeds - Comparison of seasonal sprouting readiness of three perennial weeds 21
Salonen, Jukka; Brandsæter, Lars Olav; Melander, Bo; Fogelfors, Håkan.
The NJF working group on Perennial Weeds was launched in 2001 to facilitate communication and collaboration among the research scientists working with perennial weeds. The working group belongs to the Section of Plant Protection of the NJF (Nordic Association of Agricultural Scientist).

Effects of renewal time, taproot cutting, ploughing practice, false seedbed and companion crop on docks (Rumex spp.) when renewing grassland 21
Ringselle, Björn; Berge, Therese W.; Stout, Daniel; Breland, Tor Arvid; Hatcher, Paul E.; Haugland, Espen; Koesling, Matthias; Mangerud, Kjell; Lunnan, Tor; Brandsæter, Lars Olav.
Docks (Rumex spp.) are a considerable problem in grassland production worldwide. We investigated how different cultural management techniques affected dock populations during grassland renewal: (I) renewal time, (II) companion crop, (III) false seedbed, (IV) taproot cutting (V), plough skimmer and (VI) ploughing depth. Three factorial split-split plot experiments were carried out in Norway in 2007–2008 (three locations), 2008–2009 (one location) and 2009 (one location). After grassland renewal, more dock plants emerged from seeds than from roots. Summer renewal resulted in more dock seed and root plants than spring renewal. Adding a spring barley companion crop to the grassland crop often reduced dock density and biomass. A false seedbed resulted in 71%...
