The science guiding the \EURECA campaign and its measurements are presented. \EURECA comprised roughly five weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic — eastward and south-eastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, \EURECA marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or, or the life-cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly four hundred...

POMME - Campagne Pomme T0 - Rapport de données CTD-O2 ArchiMer
Desaubies, Yves; Billant, Andre; Branellec, Pierre.

CAMPAGNE POMME T0. Rapport de Données ADCP (Volume 2) ArchiMer
Billant, Andre; Branellec, Pierre; Mercier, Herle.
One of the key processes of the ocean circulation and large scale air-sea interaction is water mass formation. In the north Atlantic, the upper ocean circulation brings warm waters to higher latitudes, where vigorous cooling leads, during the winter, to the formation of deep mixed layers (up to several hundred meters deep). As these newly formed water masses are advected and spread southward they are overlaid during the spring and summer by warmer water. Thus they lose contact with the atmosphere and become part of ocean circulation as intermediate water. This succession of events constitute subduction. The newly formed water mass is typically of low potential vorticity (nearly homogeneous), with characteristics imparted by the local prevailing air sea...

Campagne SEMANE 2002. Rapport de données CTD-O2 ArchiMer
Billant, Andre; Branellec, Pierre; Carton, Xavier.
The SEMANE experiments initiated by SHOM in 1995 have collected a large set of hydrological and current measurements aiming at characterizing the paths of Med water on the Iberian slope, as well as the variations of these paths. These variations include both eddy fluctuations induced by instability of the sub currents or by topography, and the longer term variations (at seasonal and interannual timescale). The 2002 experiment has renewed the 3 high-resolution CTD-LADCP (8.20W, 6.15W, 35.50N) in the gulf of Cadiz, to complement the previous realizations and to better assess the interannual variations (sections achieved at the same period of the year). The first analyses of previous experimental data both in stationary inverse modeling and for prognostic...

RREX 2017. CTD-O2 Data report ArchiMer
Branellec, Pierre; Thierry, Virginie.
The Reykjanes Ridge is a major topographic feature of the North-Atlantic Ocean. It lies in a central position along the main paths followed by the upper and lower limbs of the Meridional Overturning Cell (MOC), which contributes at moderating the European climate in creating a transport of heat toward the North Atlantic. Our hypothesis is that the Reykjanes Ridge influences the main components of the upper and lower limbs of the MOC because it is a strong constraint on the horizontal and vertical circulation, it impacts the water mass distribution and evolution and it is a region of intense turbulent mixing. The objective of the RREX project is to conduct a process study in order to better understand the role of the Reykjanes Ridge on the dynamics and...

BOCATS 2016. CTD-O2 data report ArchiMer
Branellec, Pierre; Lherminier, Pascale.
The BOCATS cruise (Biennial Observation of Carbon, Acidification, Transport and Sedimentation) was carried out in the North Atlantic from Vigo (June 18) to Reykjavik (July 31). It was composed of 2 main sections: the OVIDE section coast to coast between Portugal and the south tip of Greenland, followed by the Reykjanes Ridge section, from 55 °N to Iceland. The classical hydrographic rosette was cast 137 times along the route. While the CTD-O2 probe acquired continuous profiles of the “physical” variables (pressure, temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen), 28 Niskin bottles were closed at different levels during the upcast to provide samples for biogeochemical analysis. We report here an overview of the cruise operations and team, followed by a focus on...

Measurements of salinity by volontary observing ships are complementary of the measurements performed by the research vessels and represent a significant contribution to the global ocean observing networks. The Laboratoire de Physique des Océans (LPO) has tested four NKE-STPS sensors developped for the RECOPESCA project in collaboration with sailor Philippe Poupon. The sensors have been operating for 3 navigation seasons on board saling ship Fleur Australe. This reports synthesizes the informations related to the preparation, installation and checking of the sensors.

Branellec, Pierre; Lherminier, Pascale.
Complementing the study of the variability of the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre that is performed in the frame of the Ovide project, the East Greenland/Irminger Current (EGIC) was measured at 60°N between June 2004 to June 2006 by an array of 5 moorings, placed on a section from the shelf to the 1900m isobath. The moorings were equipped with 15 RCM currentmeters and 2 ADCPs to measure the volume transport, and also 5 micro-CTD at mooring heads (about 200m below the surface) to measure the vertical displacement of the moorings and the variability of the warm and salty water masses in the Irminger Current. The highest velocities, about 80 cm/s, are found at the top of mooring B. The core of the current is located between moorings B and C. The current...

The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2014 (IDP2014) is the first publicly available data product of the international GEOTRACES programme, and contains data measured and quality controlled before the end of 2013. It consists of two parts: (1) a compilation of digital data for more than 200 trace elements and isotopes (TEls) as well as classical hydrographic parameters, and (2) the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas providing a strongly inter-linked on-line atlas including more than 300 section plots and 90 animated 3D scenes. The IDP2014 covers the Atlantic, Arctic, and Indian oceans, exhibiting highest data density in the Atlantic. The TEI data in the IDP2014 are quality controlled by careful assessment of intercalibration results and multi-laboratory data...
