Growth dynamics of tree species in a remnant of Araucaria Forest PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Canetti, Aline; Ruy, Camila Castilla; Mattos, Patricia Povoa de; Braz, Evaldo Muñoz.
Studies that address the appropriate use of forest resources are essential for the management and conservation of forest remnants, such as the Araucaria Forest. Considering the importance to improve the knowledge of the tree species growth in subtropical regions, the present study aimed to assess the intra-annual diameter growth of tree species in Colombo County, Paraná State, Brazil. In November 2009 dendrometer bands were installed in adult trees (15 to 25 trees) of 9 species among the most frequent in the studied Araucaria Forest remnant. The increment in diameter were measured monthly until June 2011. Ocotea bicolor grew faster and more constant than the other species. This may be due to lower coverage of the trees canopies, making easier to O. bicolor...

O. puberula e I. paraguariensis apresentaram crescimento periódico...

Criteria to be considered to achieve a sustainable second cycle in Amazon Forest PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Braz, Evaldo Muñoz; Mattos, Patricia Povoa; Thaines, Fabio; de Madron, Luc Durrieu; Garrastazu, Marilice Cordeiro; Canetti, Aline; d’Oliveira, Marcus Vinício Neves.
Remnant forest structure and increment by diameter class play a decisive role in the recovery volume for the next cutting cycle. Tree species in the Amazon Forest do not present a defined pattern of diameter structure, which is discussed here using Cedrela odorata L. as a case study The aim of this study was to identify, by simulation, recovery from logging in a real situation at three timber production sites, and the alternatives that are available to ensure commercial timber volume to a second cut cycle in the Brazilian Amazon. The study is concerned regarding the diametric classes of productive trees to the next cycle, the comparison demonstrates that one of the strategies recovers stock volume more quickly than expected in the cut cycle defined by...

Twenty years monitoring growth dynamics of a logged tropical forest in Western Amazon PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
d'Oliveira, Marcus Vinicio Neves; Oliveira, Luis Claudio; Acuña, Mario Humberto Aravena; Braz, Evaldo Muñoz.
We performed a forest growth dynamics study in Acre State, Brazilian southwestern Amazon, where a 20 ha area was logged in 1992. The study was based permanent sample plots (1 ha) established in the logged area and in an unlogged forest immediately after logging operations finished. Forest dynamics parameters were assessed in terms of aboveground dried biomass (AGB). During the study period, three extreme climate events triggered a high impact on both logged and unlogged areas, producing AGB losses greater than those estimated for logging. Twenty years after logging, ingrowth and mortality rates were similar to those expected in an undisturbed forest, and AGB recovery was significantly faster in the logged areas. Forest management, when properly applied,...

Characterization of structure and development of models to quantify wood potential of an unmanaged Araucaria angustifolia stand PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Curto, Rafaella De Angeli; de Mattos, Patrícia Povoa; Braz, Evaldo Muñoz; Zachow, Randolf; Péllico Netto, Sylvio.
The objective of this study was to characterize of an unmanaged stand of Araucaria angustifolia and to development of models to quantify the wood potential, aiming to support the development of forest management plans in stands with similar conditions. The work was developed into a stand established in 1946, in National Forest of Açungui, in Campo Largo County, Paraná State, Brazil. There was only one thinning in the stand, between 1970 and 1980. From the frequency of individuals in each diametric class, it was observed the condition of stagnation and competition with cohort in the beginning of class distribution. With the application of the probability density function of Weibull-3P, Trorey model, and the 5th polynomial by diameter class, it was possible...

Density of Araucaria angustifolia wood from overstocked stand PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Curto, Rafaella De Angeli; Mattos, Patricia Póvoa de; Braz, Evaldo Muñoz; Netto, Sylvio Pellico; Zachow, Randolf.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the radial and longitudinal variations of wood specific gravity in an overstocked stand of Araucaria angustifolia, with 65 years. The stand was located in the National Forest of Açungui, Campo Largo, Parana State, Brazil, with thinning recorded between 1970 and 1980, without subsequent thinnings. We selected three trees for each diameter class: 10-30 cm, 30-50 cm and 50-70 cm. To the longitudinal analysis, we collected discs from seven heights (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% of commercial stem and at 1.3 m). The barks were removed and it was obtained opposite wedges until pith and five samples were taken in radial direction from each disk. In general, there was an increase of wood specific gravity in radial direction. The...
