Food Safety in Agricultural International Trade: The Spanish experience in Mediterranean products AgEcon
Briz, Julian; de Felipe, Isabel; Garca, Marian.
Food international trade between developed and developing countries is increasing as a consequence of the worldwide liberalization movement. Tariffs and technical barriers are decreasing and many exporters in developing countries are ready to supply to developed markets. However there are non-tariff barriers, some of them related to food safety. The goal of this paper is to analyse how some food safety and quality control measures may be overcome by Less Developed Countries following some indications, such as a benchmarking analysis. The identification of “best practice” in operating firms may be useful to others. We describe the evolution of international trade, the situation at destination and origin markets through the international channel. It is...

Fish Chain Performance in Madrid Market: An Empirical Analysis AgEcon
de Felipe, Isabel; Briz, Julian.
Food chain analysis is becoming a useful instrument to increase efficiency. We focus the attention in the fish sector looking at the links from consumer to wholesalers in the region of Madrid. In order to get adequate information we developed face to face enquiries to the consumers, retailers and wholesalers. The analysis of the Madrid market give us a useful approach of the national and international sector, due to the fact that Mercamadrid is the biggest fish wholesale market in Europe, and the consumption in Madrid is representative in many ways of the Spanish market. Finally there are some conclusions and recommendations oriented toward the stakeholders.

Benchmarking International Food Safety Performance in the Fresh Produce Sector AgEcon
Garcia Martinez, Marian; Poole, Nigel D.; Briz, Julian; de Felipe, Isabel; Yalcin, Ismet; Koc, A. Ali; Messaho, Driss.
The objective of this paper is to assess food systems performance in Mediterranean countries to deliver safe food (fresh produce), and to demonstrate the capacity to the satisfaction of private customers and public regulators. To that end, an international benchmarking exercise was developed to assess the quality performance gap in food standards across countries and food systems. The study was carried out in three Mediterranean countries: Spain, Morocco and Turkey and involved an audit of the citrus and tomatoes supply chains, and a comparison with existing "best practice" in infrastructure and management practices at both firm and industry level. The aim was to identify the gaps between fresh produce exporters and a best practice company. To that end,...

Impact of agricultural trade liberalization between the EU and Mediterranean countries: the case of the tomato processing industry AgEcon
Montigaud, Jean-Claude; Coelho, Alfredo; Giacomini, Corrado; Briz, Julian.
This study aims to describe and explain the impact of trade liberalization between the EU- 15 and the southern Mediterranean countries, with special emphasis on Southern EU (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Greece). The selected activity to be studied is the processing tomato industry. To do that, we use three related approaches (systems, industrial economics and management tools). After describing the tomato processing system, we introduce three case studies: Copador (member of CIO) located in Parma, Louis Martin SA nearby Avignon and Alsat SL located in Don Benito (Extremadura). Some conclusions: the EU processing tomato industry will continue and probably expand its activities on the Mediterranean borders; the competition between Italy and Spain will...

Challenge to SME to Survive in Food Dynamic Markets: Innovation and Efficient Networks AgEcon
Briz, Julian; de Felipe, Isabel.
The EU food entrepreneurs are facing dramatic changes in the competition arena. Globalization and liberalization processes are offering cheaper food products in international markets, either from countries with better comparative advantages or with more efficient marketing strategies. At the same time, food markets are in a process of continuous segmentation and changes. Consumers are located in different niches, according to socio-demographic variables, cultures and traditions. Some of them respond to price changes while others are more concerned with quality control and food safety. It is on this segment where typical products, traceability and denominations of origin have significant values. SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) have to survive on this...

The development of an analytical tool for integrating 'the voice of the consumer' in new product development AgEcon
de Carlos, Pilar; Garcia Martinez, Marian; de Felipe, Isabel; Briz, Julian; Morais, Federico.
The development of new products and how the process is organised and managed within the firm is a key area in management research due to the high failure rate of new products and the consequent waste of limited resources. Developing new products and being innovative requires companies to have deep understanding of the consumer, the market and the environment but most importantly to effectively apply this knowledge in the development of new products that meet consumer's expectations. This paper aims at developing an innovative framework to incorporate the 'voice of consumer' at early stages of the new product development (NPD) process. To that end, the paper will consider the practical implementation of the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) in the...

Demand for Organic Milk Products in Portugal AgEcon
Rosa, Rui; Briz, Julian; Mili, Samir.
Milk consumption patterns are changing in Portugal. Factors like convenience, quality and safety increasingly constitute the basis for the Portuguese consumer purchasing decision. Demand for organic milk products (OMP) is emerging while most of these products are supplied by foreign companies. This study explores the demand for OMP in Portugal using both direct market observation and multivariate methods, in particular factor and cluster analysis. It appears that there are specific emerging segments preferring OMP, as they are increasingly concerned by health attributes and environmental protection.

INNOVATION IN THE SPANISH FOOD AND DRINK INDUSTRY AgEcon
Martinez, Marian Garcia; Briz, Julian.
This article examines the innovative performance of the Spanish Food & Drink Industry (F&DI). Results highlight the 'evolutionary' rather than 'revolutionary' nature of innovation activities in the Spanish F&DI. However, the adoption of 'defensive/imitative' strategies by Spanish F&D manufacturers raises important questions given the current manufacturer-retailer relationship with an increasing emphasis on innovation by food retailers when accepting/rejecting new products. The paper stresses the importance of in-house technological capabilities in innovation performance with a higher probability for Spanish F&D firms to be 'truly' innovative the higher their technological autonomy level.

Quality Function Deployment: Can Improve Innovation Efficiency in the Food Industry? AgEcon
Garcia Martinez, Marian; de Carlos, Pilar; de Felipe, Isabel; Briz, Julian; Morais, Federico; Navarro, Manuel.
This paper considers the implementation of the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) as a methodological framework for the development of new food products. This paper focuses on the beef supply chain and develops a horizontal product’s quality deployment as a strategic tool for the implementation of consumer-led product innovation strategies. Difficulties in the prioritisation of parameters and setting of target values for the desired performance level of each parameter would limit the implementation of a complete ‘four-phase’ model in the sector. Thus, the use of complementary management tools, such as SWOT analysis and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) would be necessary to develop more suitable process designs to the specific requirements of the...

Food Innovation and Market Risk: A Case Study of the Interface Consumer Food Industry AgEcon
Briz, Julian; de Carlos, Pilar; de Felipe, Isabel; Garcia Martinez, Marian; Morais, Federico.
Western society is suffering an increasing risk regarding the food chain for several reasons. Longer geographical distances between producers and consumers, more stakeholders in the supply chain, less capacity of national governments to regulate and protect consumers due to globalisation and the liberalization process, with pressure to innovate and increase competitively.. During the period 2004-06, there is being carried out a research project in Spain, coordinated by the Polytechnic University of Madrid and sponsored by INIA. The goal is to understand the consumer behaviour identifying the attributes of food products and to transmit the results to the food industry entrepreneurs, in order to increase their efficiency in innovation.

Traceability perception of beef: a comparison between Spanish and Italian consumers AgEcon
Mora, Cristina; Menozzi, Davide; Faioli, Giusi; de Carlos, Pilar; Briz, Julian; de Felipe, Isabel.
Nowadays, the increasing demand by customers and consumers for information on food quality and safety determines, to a certain degree, the structure of the food chain. Traceability is considered as a tool to reach and keep consumers' confidence, which became a central issue to restore consumers' confidence in beef safety after the BSE crisis that strongly affected the EU market. Numerous researches have been carried out to determine consumers' preferences related to quality and food safety. However, the consumer perception of beef traceability has not yet been studied enough. In this paper we want to investigate the perception of Italian and Spanish consumers on this issue by analysing the results of six focus groups carried out in both countries, in the...
