Impact of fresh grapefruit quality on demand AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
This study incorporates quality into the Rotterdam demand system based on utility theory. Quality was modeled through its impact on marginal utility via perceived prices, following theoretical work by Basemann and Barten, among others. Results show that the price elasticity of fresh grapefruit demand is near unitary at the retail level and juice content has had relatively large impacts on fresh grapefruit demand.

Asymmetric demand responses: a demand system approach AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
Asymmetry is introduced into the Rotterdam model by allowing the income response to depend on whether real income increases or decreases. Price responses, in turn, are asymmetric through the general and specific substitution terms. Analysis of data on food and three other broadly defined goods suggests presence of asymmetry.

THE IMPACT OF THE REDUCTION IN THE AUSTRALIAN ORANGE-JUICE TARIFF AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Spreen, Thomas H..
After substantial reduction in the Australian orange juice tariff, citrus growers in that country shifted their efforts away from Valencia orange production towards Navel oranges intended for the fresh market. Australia has been successful in penetrating the world market for fresh oranges. Given the large size of the orange industry in Florida, however, it is unlikely that Florida growers could follow the same model if the U.S. orange juice were substantially reduced or eliminated.

A DYNAMIC DIFFERENTIAL DEMAND SYSTEM: AN APPLICATION OF TRANSLATION AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
The differential demand system or Rotterdam model is extended to include lagged consumption through translation parameters, allowing habit and inventory effects. Applications of the model to annual U.S. expenditure and weekly juice sales data illustrate the importance of the time interval of an observation on the relative strengths of the habit inventory.

Impacts of a Ban on the Sales of Florida Honey Tangerines in California Due to Citrus Black Spot AgEcon
Brown, Mark G..
Citrus black spot (CBS) was discovered in March of 2010 near Immokalee in Collier County. CBS may adversely impact citrus growers both through demand and supply impacts. This paper has focused on the demand side of the equation. The analysis has also focused on Florida honey tangerines and the market in California. This market accounts for about 17.7% of Florida honey tangerine sales. If Florida product were banned from California in fear of CBS spreading there, the FOB price for Florida honey tangerines is estimated to decline by $3.48 to $4.40 per box, all else constant. The on-tree price would be expected to decline by the same amounts. However, with respect to production costs, all else would not be constant. Growers would be expected to bear...

Advertising and Product Confusion: A Case Study of Grapefruit Juice AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Behr, Robert M..
Demand relationships for two closely related products -- grapefruit juice and grapefruit-juice cocktail -- were estimated from grocery-store scanner data to analyze the contention that consumer confusion exists between the two products. Results suggest confusion may exist, with grapefruit-juice advertising not only increasing the demand for grapefruit juice but also for grapefruit-juice cocktail.

Conditional Demand System for Beverages AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Jauregui, Carlos E..
Estimates of a conditional demand system for twelve beverages, based on the Rotterdam model subject to a full, first-order autoregressive process, are discussed. Impacts of beverage prices, total beverage expenditures and promotions on beverage quantities demanded are provided. The results indicate that all beverages were normal goods; the majority had price elastic demands; most had a relatively large own-promotion effect; and a number of significant cross-promotional effects exist, indicating a relatively high level of competition for market share among the beverages studied.

An Engel Curve Analysis of Household Expenditure in Taiwan: 1996-98 AgEcon
Chung, Rebecca H.; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Brown, Mark G..
Seven systems of Engel curves for expenditures on ten commodity groups were estimated using Taiwanese household expenditure data for the period from 1996 through 1998. Results show that the estimated expenditure elasticities are insensitive to the choice of functional forms.

European Demand for Orange Juice AgEcon
Brown, Mark G..
The demand for OJ in Europe, and in particular the own-price elasticity of demand, has been difficult to estimate due to lack of good data. Europe, however, is the largest OJ market in the world (USDA, Foreign Agricultural Service), and cannot be ignored in analyzing the U.S. and Florida OJ situations, given OJ is an internationally traded commodity. Thus, estimates of the impacts of factors such as own-price on Europe’s OJ demand are critical for understanding the market. The estimates in this study, although rough, provide some guidance for the magnitude of the price response in Europe, but to keep them in perspective, they are based on a relatively small number of observations and a proxy variable, suggesting that, as more and hopefully better data...

Production and Price Effects of New Diseases and Other Challenges Confronting the Processed Orange Industry AgEcon
Spreen, Thomas H.; Brown, Mark G.; Jauregui, Carlos E..
Sao Paulo and Florida are the primary producers of orange juice. Both regions face production challenges. In this paper, a model of the world orange juice market is used to analyze the effect of citrus greening and high sugarcane prices on the production and price of orange juice.

RESTRICTIONS ON THE EFFECTS OF PREFERENCE VARIABLES IN THE ROTTERDAM MODEL AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
This study examines imposing and testing restrictions on preference variables in the Rotterdam model through the impacts of these variables on marginal utilities. An empirical analysis of the impact of a female labor force participation variable in a Rotterdam demand system for fresh fruit illustrates the methodology. This variable was modeled through its impact on marginal utilities via "adjusted" prices, following theoretical work by Basmann and Barten, among others. Results show that the female labor participation has negatively impacted the demands for citrus, while positively impacting the demands for other fresh fruit.

Allocation of Advertising and Research Dollars In the Florida Orange-Juice Industry AgEcon
Brown, Mark G..
In this study, an OJ model was developed to examine the optimal advertising-research mix to maximize Florida grower revenue net of the costs of these activities. The model is based on assumed coefficients reflecting the impacts of prices, advertising and research. The effects of prices on demand and supply, as well as the effect of advertising on demand, were set based on findings of prior studies. The effect of research on supply is less certain, and a range of research effects was considered. A range of advertising effects was also considered given the study’s focus. The model solutions for the various advertising and research assumptions considered indicate that optimal advertising expenditures are significant

IMPACTS ON U.S. PRICES OF REDUCING ORANGE JUICE TARIFFS IN MAJOR WORLD MARKETS AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Spreen, Thomas H.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
A demand model is developed to examine the impacts on orange juice prices resulting from elimination or reduction of the tariffs on orange juice imposed by the United States, European Union, and Japan. An empirical analysis suggests that elimination of the U.S. tariff by itself would decrease the U.S. orange juice price by about $0.22 per gallon, while simultaneous elimination of the U.S., European, and Japanese tariffs would decrease the U.S. price by about $0.13 per gallon. Alternatively, reducing these tariffs according to the Swiss 25 formula would decrease the U.S. price by an estimated $0.09 per gallon. The U.S. produces about 1.4 billion gallons of orange juice annually and each penny reduction in the price impact increases U.S. orange juice FOB...
