Chronic intermittent stress exposure and access to grass silage interact differently in their effect on behaviour, gastric health and stress physiology of entire or castrated male growing finishing pigs Organic Eprints
Holinger, Mirjam; Früh, Barbara; Stoll, Peter; Graage, Robert; Wirth, Sandra; Bruckmaier, Rupert; Prunier, Armelle; Kreuzer, Michael; Hillmann, Edna.
Entire male pigs display more aggressive and sexual behaviour. This might cause a condition of chronic stress and impair their welfare. In order to assess chronic stress in entire and castrated male pigs, as well as effects of providing grass silage as occupational and feed material on behaviour and health, we carried out a 2 × 2 × 2-factorial experiment with 147 growing-finishing pigs. Factors investigated were castration (entire/castrated), chronic intermittent social stress exposure (yes/no) and access to grass silage (yes/no), as well as their interactions. The stress exposure treatment consisted of repeated short-term confrontations and separations. We recorded different behavioural variables, circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol, response to an ACTH...

Effects of an oral Echinacea purpurea alcoholic spissum extract in calves. A placebo-controlled, randomized, double blinded study Organic Eprints
Ayrle, Hannah; Mevissen, Meike; Bruckmaier, Rupert; Wellnitz, Olga; Kaske, Martin; Bieber, Anna; Walkenhorst, Michael.
Background Antimicrobial resistance resulted in international accordance to strengthen the research to investigate novel treatment options including medicinal plants. To investigate the effect of two dosages of an orally hydro-ethanolic Echinacea purpurea (L.) MOENCH spissum extract (EP) on performance, clinical health, antibody production, red and white blood cell count and expression of immunological parameters in calves, a double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial has been performed.

Vergleich von Energieaufwand, Futteraufnahme und Aktivität bei zwei Holstein Kuhtypen auf der Weide unter Bedingungen des biologischen Landbaus Organic Eprints
Thanner, Sophie; Schori, Fredy; Görs, Solvig; Metges, Cornelia; Bruckmaier, Rupert; Dohme-Meier, Frigga.
In order to find cows well-adapted to organic production systems, the present study compared the energy expenditure, grass intake, grazing behavior and physical activity of two different Holstein strains in an organic full-time grazing system without concentrate supplementation. Twelve pairs of Swiss (HCH; 613 ± 34 kg BW) and New Zealand Holstein-Friesian (HNZ; 570 ± 54 kg BW) cows in mid lactation were investigated during a 7 d data collection period. The energy expenditure was analyzed using the 13C bicarbonate dilution technique in combination with an automatic blood sampling system during 6h per day. Although HCH and HNZ differed in bodyweight and seize, physical activity and energy expenditure only differed numerically between the two cow strains. As...
