In view of the need'for research on the practical use of the brine shrimp Artemia salina in aquaaulture, our research team at the State University of Ghent (Belgium) is studying the following aspects : 1- The automatized mass-culturing of larvae. 2- The controlled production of cysts. 3- The comparative study of geographical strains. 4- The study of the metabolism of the cysts.

The use of <i>Artemia</i> cysts in aquaculture: the concept of "hatching efficiency" and description of a new method for cyst processing OMA

The quality of brands of <i>Artemia</i> cysts should be expressed on a weight basis, namely the number of live nauplii hatching out per unit of weight of product and not as a "hatching percentage" since the latter concept does not take into account the degree of impurity of the material. A standardized method for the determination of the hatching efficiency is proposed. A new methodology for cyst processing has been worked out at laboratory scale, based on a 2-step cleaning (brine and tap water) followed by dehydration (air or brine) or decapsulation and dehydration (brine).

New aspects of the use of inert diets for high density culturing of brine shrimp OMA

Brine shrimp being non-selective filter-feeders, cheap agricultural waste products should be evaluated as potential food sources for their controlled mass culturing. Preliminary results of screening tests performed with wheat bran, soybean meal , rice bran and whey powder in culturing systems of various size are reported. Wheat bran appears to be unsuitable as monodiet for brine shrimp. The other products tested support good growth although specific precautions have to be taken with some foods to avoid problems of water quality during culturing. Processing techniques for the manual or mechanical preparation of inert feeds for <i>Artemia</i> are indicated. Improvements in the decapsulation of <i>Artemia</i> cysts OMA

As described in our previous paper (Sorgeloos et al. , 1977) hypochlorite can be used as reactive agent to dissolve the lipoproteic chorion of <i>Artemia</i> cysts. Two commercial products are available worldwide, i.e. bleaching powder, chloride of lime Ca(OCL)<sub>2</sub> and bleaching water NaOCl solutions. In Western Europe the latter product is the cheapest, whereas in the USA and Southeast Asia bleaching powder should be considered. Because the decapsulation process is a much more critical operation with bleaching powder, especially with regard to the viability of the embryos (Bruggeman et al., in preparation; Manzi, personal communication), we studied the use of technical NaOCl solutions in detail.

Improvements in the decapsulation technique of <i>Artemia</i> cysts OMA

Because bleaching powder is the cheapest source of hypochlorite in many countries of the world, a decapsulation procedure has been worked out in which technical calciumhypochlorite Ca(OCl)<sub>2</sub> is utilized.A standard procedure has been developed for the deactivation of the chlorine residues adsorbed on the decapsulated cysts. Proper dehydration and storage of the decapsulated cysts assure maximum viability of the embryos in diapause. A prototype system for routine decapsulation and processing of large quantities of cysts is proposed.Beneficial effects of the decapsulation process on both the hatching percentage and the individual dry weight of the hatched nauplii are discussed in detail.
