A new record of ‘Achatina’ vassei Germain, 1918 (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Achatinidae) from Mozambique – an unsolved problem Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
'Achatina vassei Germain', 1918, of which so far only the holotype is known (figured), is now recorded from Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique (Sofala Province) north of the road Beira-Mtare (Zimbabwe). The systematic position is still unclear because of the lack of anatomical data; this taxon is probably a restricted-range species centred on the plateau of Central Mozambique. A list of the terrestrial molluscs of the ‘Greater Gorongosa Ecosystem’ from the literature and specimens in the Leiden Museum is added; Curvella whytei E.A. Smith, 1899, is recorded as new for Mozambique.

Notes on Micractaeon, a monotypic genus of African land snails (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Ferussaciidae?) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van; Winter, A.J. de.
Micractaeon kakamegaensis Verdcourt, 1993 (type loc. Kenya, Kakamega Forest), is a synonym of Pseudopeas koptawelilense Germain, 1934 (type loc. Kenya, Mt. Elgon); the proper name is therefore Micractaeon koptawelilensis (Germain, 1934). New anatomical data are supplied, more or less confirming classification in the family Ferussaciidae. The shell is subject to some considerable variation in size, shape and sculpture. The species appears to be widely distributed in various types of forest in tropical Africa (Ghana, Cameroon, eastern and south-eastern Zaïre, Kenya, Malawi, and eastern Zambia); hypsometrical distribution is generally from c. 950 m to c. 2300 m, although in Ghana it has been collected at altitudes of between < 250 and c. 700 m.

New data on southern African Achatinidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Increasing knowledge of the genital anatomy of the species of the African land snail family Achatinidae has greatly improved our understanding of the delimitation of the species and the intricate interrelationships of the various taxa (Mead, 1950). The genitalia of many achatinids are still unknown due to the absence of properly preserved animals. New data, mainly on the reproductive organs of recently collected material, are supplied here for two Southern African species, Archachatina sandgroundi Bequaert and A. dimidiata (Smith), which have now been dissected for the first time. Acknowledgements are due to Mr. J. F. Peake and his staff at the British Museum (Natural History), London, Prof. K. J. Boss of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard...

Gulella johannae spec. nov. (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Streptaxidae), a new land snail from the Drakensberg range in Limpopo Province, South Africa, with notes on G. johannesburgensis (M. & P.) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Gulella (s.l.) johannae n. sp. is described from a few forest localities in the Tzaneen District, Limpopo Province, South Africa. It is characterized by a cylindrical, costulate shell with an almost entire peristome and a four-fold apertural dentition consisting of a prominent angular lamella (delimiting an only here discontinuous peristome), a mid-labral denticle, a left basal denticle, and a mid-columellar process. The shell is somewhat similar to that of G. johannesburgensis, but is consistently larger and more slender and has more whorls, while at the same time the apertural dentition is better developed; the almost uninterrupted peristome also appears to be a signifi cant character. This new taxon most likely is a restrictedrange endemic on the...

Trachygystis (Dendrotrichia) sylvicola, a new subgenus and species from Rhodesia (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata: Endodontidae) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van; Verdcourt, B..
In 1959 the first author (A.C.v.B.) discovered a peculiar snail of the pulmonate family Endodontidae in Rhodesia; on a subsequent expedition more specimens were obtained, so that a series is now available for description. The species undoubtedly belongs to the genus Trachycystis Pilsbry, 1893, but a new subgenus has to be created in order to accomodate this particular species. Anatomical data and figures have been supplied by the second author (B.V.), while the first author is responsible for the remaining part of text and figures. Dendrotrichia subgen. nov. A subgenus of Trachycystis characterised by ramose bristles on the surface of the shell; genital anatomy like that of subgenus Chalcocystis. Willem Vervoort, eminent zoologist and museum director, a sketch of his life and work on the occasion of his 80th birthday in 1997 Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Willem Vervoort was born on 12 June 1917 in Schiedam. He read biology at Leiden university (19361941, interrupted by active war service) where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1946 under the supervision of Prof. Dr H. Boschma with a thesis entitled 'The Copepoda of the Snellius Expedition I'. In 1941 Dr Vervoort was appointed assistant, later curator of invertebrates at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, where he was in charge of the invertebrates minus arthropods and molluscs. He worked at the museum on hydroids and copepods until 1950, interrupted by two trips to Antarctica where he was cetacean biologist to the national whaling company (1946/1947, 1947/1948). In the period 1950-1959 Dr Vervoort was lecturer in histology/cytology in the zoology...

Alien Planorbid (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata) from South West Africa erroneously recorded as Biomphalaria Pfeifferi Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
In 1970 I published a record of the freshwater snail Biomphalaria pfeifferi (Krauss, 1848) (fam. Planorbidae) for South West Africa: "Sandamap Farm, Spitzkoppe" (Van Bruggen, 1970: 45, figs. 1-13). Dr. D. S. Brown of the Medical Research Council (London) kindly drew my attention to the fact that judging from the figures the described specimens certainly do not belong to this species. Dr. Brown generously agreed to examine the material, which unfortunately only consisted of shells. His conclusion is that these represent an imported alien species of the American planorbid genus Helisoma Swainson, 1840. This genus is rich in species which are very difficult to tell apart, particularly if their genital anatomy and geographical origin are unknown. Tropical...

Pseudoglessula Libera, a new Subulinid land snail from Guinea, West Africa (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata) Naturalis
Solem, A.; Bruggen, A.C. van.
Study of some land snails collected in Guinea, West Africa, by Ms. Diane deVry has led to the description of a new species, Pseudoglessula libera. It is currently known only from several localities near Conakry, but probably has a wide distribution. Detailed comparisons with previously described taxa unfortunately were not possible. Many early descriptions are very brief and most available illustrations do not clearly show details of shape and sculpture that would enable quantifying differences. Direct comparisons with named material in major museum collections (London, Frankfurt-a.-M., Paris, Leiden, Chicago, Philadelphia) have failed to locate conspecific or very closely allied morphs, hence specific description is necessary. We include data on epiphragm...

Studies on the Streptaxidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata) of Malawi 8. A revision of ‘Marconia’ hamiltoni (Smith), the largest local Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van; Winter, A.J. de.
‘Marconia’ hamiltoni s.l. is known from two discrete mountainous areas in Malawi, i.e. the (southern) Mt. Mulanje complex, and the (more northern) Zomba Plateau s.l. These uplands are separated by about 65 km of lower lying land with different types of vegetation and climate. Material from these two regions may be distinguished as separate species, the southern populations having comparatively small and broad shells with some apertural dentition (‘M’. hamiltoni, lectotype designated), while the northern populations have noticeably larger and more slender shells with a more reduced apertural dentition (‘M’. malavensis). Discussion of the type localities for both taxa shows that these are either localized in an unlikely place (‘M’. hamiltoni) or unclear...

Gulella adami, a new species of land snail from the Ivory Coast, West Africa (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Streptaxidae) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Gulella adami spec. nov. is described from a classical West African locality, Assini in the Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire). It is most unusual in showing two superficial parietal processes, which may also be interpreted as a double angular lamella, in the aperture of the shell. The shell closely resembles that of various Enidae in SE Europe and adjoining areas around the Mediterranean, thereby providing a striking example of convergent evolution.

New taxa of Streptaxidae and Enidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda Pulmonata) from South Africa and Malawi Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
For various reasons a number of discoveries in the field of Southern African malacology has now reached a point where there is no need for further delay in publication. In the course of a long term project, the revision of the Streptaxidae of Southern Africa, three new taxa have come to light which are described below. Mr. C. C. Appleton (Bilharzia Research Unit, Nelspruit, South Africa) during an extended period of research in Tongaland (NE. Zululand, South Africa) has found a remarkable new form of the genus Gulella L. Pfeiffer, 1856. This is seemingly closely related to a recently described extinct species from Aldabra Island in the western Indian Ocean (Van Bruggen, 1975). It is an unfortunate consequence of the rules of zoological nomenclature that...

Studies on the Streptaxidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda Pulmonata) of Malaw^ i 5. Description of Gulella meredithae spec. nov. Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Gulella meredithae spec. nov. is described from the uplands of central and northern Malawi. It belongs to what has been termed the G. browni-group (better called the G. radius-group), an assemblage of Central and East African taxa with small shells with a noticeably acute apex, with more or less smooth nepionic whorls and with marked costulation on the remaining whorls. Attention is drawn to the striking juvenile apertural dentition.

Caenis Demoulini, a new Ephemeropteron from Thailand Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
During a short stay at Bangkok on December 3rd, 1953, Professor H. Boschma observed that enormous quantities of minute insects were attracted by lamplight in the hotel of the Royal Dutch Airlines (K.L.M.) "Plaswijk" at the airport Laksi. From the enormous accumulations of these insects around the lamps he collected a sample which he entrusted to me for examination. This sample proved to consist almost entirely of a new species of mayfly which is described in the present paper. Caenis demoulini nov. spec. Female imago. Head and thorax uniformly yellowish brown. Eyes purple-black, prominent. Antennae grey-brown ; median ocellus prominent, colour light brown with a darker edge. Abdomen pale yellowish brown, at the dorsal surface with light browngrey markings,...

Studies on the Streptaxidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda Pulmonata) of Malawi9. Description of Gulella streptostelopsis, a new Streptostele-like species of Gulella. Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Gulella streptostelopsis spec. nov. is described from a series of localities of mainly between 1000 and 1500 m a.s.l. in Malawi south of about 11°S. The minute, almost smooth, shell (length 2.0-2.4 mm) resembles that of the genus Streptostele (hence the name), but is characterized by three-fold apertural dentition and just under six whorls. This taxon may represent a new genus; pending studies on the anatomy no new generic name is proposed.

Notes on some land and freshwater Mollusca from Auvergne, France Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
From August 16 till September 1, 1955, Dr. H. C. Blöte, Mr. J. J. Barkman, and the present author were the leaders of an excursion of students in biology of the University at Leiden to Central France. For some two weeks the party was hospitably lodged in the "Station Biologique" in the village Besse-en-Chandesse (département Puy de Dôme), 30 km S.S.W. of Clermont-Ferrand. Thanks to the generosity of Prof. R. Hovasse and Dr. L. Olivier, we could stay in this biological institute, which belongs to the University at Clermont-Ferrand. During the excursion the author paid special attention to the collecting of land and freshwater Mollusca. The very dry and hot weather during our stay was one of the main difficulties in carrying the project into execution;...

Neosciara Wendalinae, an interesting new Nematoceron from the Netherlands (Diptera, Lycoriidae) Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
In the course of the year 1954 I received for identification a little Nematoceron belonging to the family Lycoriidae (Sciaridae). After a careful examination of the material and the literature I arrived at the conclusion that my specimens represented a hitherto undescribed species. It belongs to the genus Neosciara Pettey, 1918 (sensu Lengersdorf, 1930 and Frey, 1942). There is some confusion about the naming and delimitation of the genera in the subfamily Lycoriinae. The four most important opinions are : I. Lengersdorf (1930) : Genus Lycoria Meigen, 1800, syn. Saara Meigen, 1803, Gruppe I (no name, veins cu and m with bristles) and Gruppe II Neosciara Pettey, 1918 (cu and m bare). II.
