Micractaeon kakamegaensis Verdcourt, 1993 (type loc. Kenya, Kakamega Forest), is a synonym of Pseudopeas koptawelilense Germain, 1934 (type loc. Kenya, Mt. Elgon); the proper name is therefore Micractaeon koptawelilensis (Germain, 1934). New anatomical data are supplied, more or less confirming classification in the family Ferussaciidae. The shell is subject to some considerable variation in size, shape and sculpture. The species appears to be widely distributed in various types of forest in tropical Africa (Ghana, Cameroon, eastern and south-eastern Zaïre, Kenya, Malawi, and eastern Zambia); hypsometrical distribution is generally from c. 950 m to c. 2300 m, although in Ghana it has been collected at altitudes of between < 250 and c. 700 m. |

Increasing knowledge of the genital anatomy of the species of the African land snail family Achatinidae has greatly improved our understanding of the delimitation of the species and the intricate interrelationships of the various taxa (Mead, 1950). The genitalia of many achatinids are still unknown due to the absence of properly preserved animals. New data, mainly on the reproductive organs of recently collected material, are supplied here for two Southern African species, Archachatina sandgroundi Bequaert and A. dimidiata (Smith), which have now been dissected for the first time. Acknowledgements are due to Mr. J. F. Peake and his staff at the British Museum (Natural History), London, Prof. K. J. Boss of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard... |

In 1959 the first author (A.C.v.B.) discovered a peculiar snail of the pulmonate family Endodontidae in Rhodesia; on a subsequent expedition more specimens were obtained, so that a series is now available for description. The species undoubtedly belongs to the genus Trachycystis Pilsbry, 1893, but a new subgenus has to be created in order to accomodate this particular species. Anatomical data and figures have been supplied by the second author (B.V.), while the first author is responsible for the remaining part of text and figures. Dendrotrichia subgen. nov. A subgenus of Trachycystis characterised by ramose bristles on the surface of the shell; genital anatomy like that of subgenus Chalcocystis. Type species: Trachycystis (Dendrotrichia) sylvicola spec.... |

In 1970 I published a record of the freshwater snail Biomphalaria pfeifferi (Krauss, 1848) (fam. Planorbidae) for South West Africa: "Sandamap Farm, Spitzkoppe" (Van Bruggen, 1970: 45, figs. 1-13). Dr. D. S. Brown of the Medical Research Council (London) kindly drew my attention to the fact that judging from the figures the described specimens certainly do not belong to this species. Dr. Brown generously agreed to examine the material, which unfortunately only consisted of shells. His conclusion is that these represent an imported alien species of the American planorbid genus Helisoma Swainson, 1840. This genus is rich in species which are very difficult to tell apart, particularly if their genital anatomy and geographical origin are unknown. Tropical... |

Study of some land snails collected in Guinea, West Africa, by Ms. Diane deVry has led to the description of a new species, Pseudoglessula libera. It is currently known only from several localities near Conakry, but probably has a wide distribution. Detailed comparisons with previously described taxa unfortunately were not possible. Many early descriptions are very brief and most available illustrations do not clearly show details of shape and sculpture that would enable quantifying differences. Direct comparisons with named material in major museum collections (London, Frankfurt-a.-M., Paris, Leiden, Chicago, Philadelphia) have failed to locate conspecific or very closely allied morphs, hence specific description is necessary. We include data on epiphragm... |

For various reasons a number of discoveries in the field of Southern African malacology has now reached a point where there is no need for further delay in publication. In the course of a long term project, the revision of the Streptaxidae of Southern Africa, three new taxa have come to light which are described below. Mr. C. C. Appleton (Bilharzia Research Unit, Nelspruit, South Africa) during an extended period of research in Tongaland (NE. Zululand, South Africa) has found a remarkable new form of the genus Gulella L. Pfeiffer, 1856. This is seemingly closely related to a recently described extinct species from Aldabra Island in the western Indian Ocean (Van Bruggen, 1975). It is an unfortunate consequence of the rules of zoological nomenclature that... |

During a short stay at Bangkok on December 3rd, 1953, Professor H. Boschma observed that enormous quantities of minute insects were attracted by lamplight in the hotel of the Royal Dutch Airlines (K.L.M.) "Plaswijk" at the airport Laksi. From the enormous accumulations of these insects around the lamps he collected a sample which he entrusted to me for examination. This sample proved to consist almost entirely of a new species of mayfly which is described in the present paper. Caenis demoulini nov. spec. Female imago. Head and thorax uniformly yellowish brown. Eyes purple-black, prominent. Antennae grey-brown ; median ocellus prominent, colour light brown with a darker edge. Abdomen pale yellowish brown, at the dorsal surface with light browngrey markings,... |

From August 16 till September 1, 1955, Dr. H. C. Blöte, Mr. J. J. Barkman, and the present author were the leaders of an excursion of students in biology of the University at Leiden to Central France. For some two weeks the party was hospitably lodged in the "Station Biologique" in the village Besse-en-Chandesse (département Puy de Dôme), 30 km S.S.W. of Clermont-Ferrand. Thanks to the generosity of Prof. R. Hovasse and Dr. L. Olivier, we could stay in this biological institute, which belongs to the University at Clermont-Ferrand. During the excursion the author paid special attention to the collecting of land and freshwater Mollusca. The very dry and hot weather during our stay was one of the main difficulties in carrying the project into execution;... |

In the course of the year 1954 I received for identification a little Nematoceron belonging to the family Lycoriidae (Sciaridae). After a careful examination of the material and the literature I arrived at the conclusion that my specimens represented a hitherto undescribed species. It belongs to the genus Neosciara Pettey, 1918 (sensu Lengersdorf, 1930 and Frey, 1942). There is some confusion about the naming and delimitation of the genera in the subfamily Lycoriinae. The four most important opinions are : I. Lengersdorf (1930) : Genus Lycoria Meigen, 1800, syn. Saara Meigen, 1803, Gruppe I (no name, veins cu and m with bristles) and Gruppe II Neosciara Pettey, 1918 (cu and m bare). II. Séguy (1940) : Genus Lycoria Meigen, 1800 (cu and m with bristles) and... |
