| The family Characeae, represented by two genera in Brazil, Chara and Nitella, is considered to include the closest living relatives of land plants, and its members play important ecological role in aquatic ecosystems. The present taxonomic survey of Chara and Nitella was performed in tributaries that join to form the Brazilian shore of the Itaipu Reservoir on the Paraná River. | O levantamento florístico do gênero Chara (Characeae, Chlorophyta) nos Estados de Mato Grosso (18°55'05"S, 54°50'39"W) e Mato Grosso do Sul (19°12'03"S, 57°35'32"W), Brasil, resultou na identificação, descrição e ilustração das seis espécies seguintes: Chara fibrosa C. | A taxonomic survey was carried out on Coscinodiscophyceae and Fragilariophyceae found in the Iguaçu River catchment area within Iguaçu National Park, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Between September 2007 and August 2008, we collected 24 samples from two stations on the Iguaçu River, upstream and downstream of the falls. We identified 37 taxa, including 22 specific and infraspecific taxa of Coscinodiscophyceae, together with 15 specific and infraspecific taxa of Fragilariophyceae. Melosira ruttneri Hustedt and Fragilaria alpestris Krasske ex Hustedt represent new records for Brazil. |

| This study represents a taxonomic survey of class Bacillariophyceae diatoms found in samples collected in the Iguaçu River (Iguaçu National Park, municipality of Foz do Iguaçu, in the state of Paraná, Brazil) between August 2007 and July 2008. Two sampling stations were utilized, the first located upstream of Iguaçu Falls (Cais Bananeiras Station) and second downstream of the falls (Cais Macuco Safari Station). The study resulted in the identification of 86 taxa, including 74 at the specific level and seven taxonomic varieties. | This work is part of a survey of the desmid flora in a tributary of the Itaipu Reservoir, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. The objective was to expand the knowledge base regarding the genus Cosmarium (Desmidiaceae, Zygnematophyceae). We conducted a qualitative analysis of 60 samples of phytoplankton, which were collected from along the banks of the São Francisco Falso River between July of 2003 and June of 2004. We identified, drew, and described 18 taxa of Cosmarium. | Temporal and spatial variation of Nitella furcata (Roxburgh ex Bruzelius) C. Agardh emend. R.D. Wood subsp. mucronata (A. Braun) R.D. Wood var. mucronata f. oligospira (A. Braun) R.D. Wood were studied at the Ninféias pond (23°38'18.9"S, 46°37'16.3"W), a tropical, shallow, mesotrophic reservoir located in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga Biological Reserve, Municipality of São Paulo, southeast Brazil. Water samples were collected monthly from October/1996 to October/1997 for turbidity, electric conductivity, pH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, biomass, and algal phenology analysis. | Abstract: Gomphonema Ehrenberg is a genus well represented in periphytic algal flora of epicontinental environments. The substrate colonization is facilitated by the secretion of mucilage by the pore field, allowing cell adhesion. Samples were scraped off and analyzed from vegetative portions of the macrophyte Eichhornia azurea Kunth, collected in São Francisco Falso River, located in Santa Helena City, Paraná State.
