| The paper extends the work of Deller et al (2001) by introducing a spatial component in a structural growth model to capture the role of spatially distributed variables using county-level data. The premise of the analysis is that what is true at a national level may provide a partial or misleading picture when we look at particular areas. Additionally, data available at the state level can often provide richer, more precise information than what is found at the national level, so we try to explore in more depth the role of spatially distributed amenities in economic development by examining, for instance the valuable Alabama countryside features such as natural habitats, scenic landscapes and warm weather amidst a poverty of infrastructure. | The paper presents an analytical tool that could help in understanding the consequences of individual decisions associated with land use change by identifying their potential impacts to a community, county or region. The tool outlines the potential costs and benefits of land conversion activities to decision makers in Madison County, Alabama. The results show that the loss of agricultural lands erodes the county's ability to maintain revenue/cost equilibrium across the selected land use types, thus reducing the county's ability to provide current levels of service to residents. |

| County-level data for 11 southern states for 1980 and 2000 are used to examine income convergence. Ordinary least squares regression of logarithmic difference on average per capita income in 1980 demonstrated conditional income convergence with higher income changes in counties with smaller initial populations, smaller changes in African Americans, employment, education, age structure, travel time to work, or dependent age populations. The estimated rate of income convergence was 3.82% per year. |

| This paper identifies and empirically evaluates factors that explain the variations in consumers’ attitudes toward shopping at farmers markets in general and public markets in particular. The analysis draws on data from a telephone survey conducted in Jefferson County, Alabama. Logit model results point to several factors that seem to be strongly correlated with consumer purchasing behaviors and attitudes toward shopping at public markets, including income, education, age of household head, household size, and price and quality of produce. The insights gained from the study should help farmers increase the profitability of their operations and improve the likelihood that they will continue farming. |

| This paper examines the relationship between quality of life, health and several socioeconomic variables. The analysis utilizes empirical data obtained from a survey questionnaire administered on a random sample of over 2000 residents in twenty-one counties in West Virginia, and spatial data obtained by geocoding the survey respondents' addressees. Quality of life is measured by a three-point categorical measure of overall satisfaction and an ordered probit model is used to examine the relationships. The empirical results are consistent with the theoretical predictions and indicate, for instance, that quality of life satisfaction increases with income and education while it decreases with unemployment. |

| The study analyzed the determinants of land tenure insecurity in Uganda using survey data collected by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) during the Policies for Improved Land Management Project in Uganda, 1999-2001. The survey included a sample of 1322 farm households randomly selected and interviewed using a formal questionnaire. The analysis revealed that tenure category, number of households in the village involved in disputes outside the village, and the number of households in the village who lost land as a result of a dispute over land were significant factors affecting tenure insecurity. |

| Consumer acceptance of genetically modified (GM) products has become a vital factor in determining how prosperous the markets for GM products will be in the future. This phenomenon creates increased interest in understanding consumer attitudes and purchase intentions with regard to GM foods. Thus, this paper presents results based on a contingent valuation questionnaire designed to assess consumer knowledge, awareness and willingness to purchase GM-tomatoes in Huntsville metropolitan area, Alabama. The results suggest that attitudes and purchase decisions concerning GM foods are generally negative, highly complex and are based on several factors. |
