| Ahermatypic Seleractinia are very common throughout the tropical western Atlantic, both in number of species and individuals. Of the Scleractinia known from the western Atlantic, there are over twice as many species of ahermatypes (species that do not have symbiotic zooxanthellae) as hermatypes (the shallow-water “reef corals,” all of which have zooxanthellae). This paper is a review of all known species of deep-water Scleractinia that occur in the Caribbean Sea and adjacent waters, all of which are ahermatypic. This paper constitutes the second of a two part revision of the western Atlantic azooxanthellate Scleractinia — this part addressing the taxonomy and distribution of the 73 species known to occur at depths shallower than 183 m within the tropical and warm temperate realm. | A new genus, Pseudocrypthelia, is described to receive Cryptohelia pachypoma Hickson and England, 1905, a species known only from deep water off Halmahera, Indonesia. It clearly does not belong to the genus Calyptopora, as previously suggested, and differs from Crypthelia by having rudimentary gastrostyles. The gastrostyles of P. pachypoma are morphologically unique among the Stylasterina and are hypothesized to represent an independent acquisition of the structure and thus are considered to be analogous, not homologous, to other stylasterine gastrostyles.
