Impact of United States Corn-based Ethanol Production on Land Use AgEcon
Sobowale, Folakemi; Dicks, Michael R.; Campiche, Jody L..
The purpose of this research was to determine whether indirect land use occurs and if so to what extent. Indirect land use is a change from non-cropland to cropland (e.g. deforestation) that may occur in response to increasing scarcity of cropland. As farmers worldwide respond to higher crop prices in order to maintain the global food supply and demand balance, pristine lands are cleared and converted to new cropland to replace the crops for feed and food that were diverted elsewhere to biofuels production. We examine the impact of corn-based ethanol production in the United States on land use in other countries.

Land Use Implications of Expanding Biofuel Demand AgEcon
Dicks, Michael R.; Campiche, Jody L.; Torre Ugarte, Daniel de la; Hellwinckel, Chad M.; Bryant, Henry L.; Richardson, James W..
The Renewable Fuel Standard mandates in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 will require 36 billion gallons of ethanol to be produced in 2022. The mandates require that 16 of the 36 billion gallons must be produced from cellulosic feedstocks. The potential land use implications resulting from these mandates were examined using two methods, the POLYSYS model and a general equilibrium model. Results of the POLYSYS analysis indicated that 72.1 million tons of corn stover, 23.5 million tons of wheat straw, and 24.7 million acres would be used to produce 109 million tons of switchgrass in 2025 to meet the mandate. Results of the CGE analysis indicated that 10.9 billion bushels of corn grain, 71 million tons of corn stover, and 56,200 tons of...

Effects of Recent Fossil Energy Market Developments on U.S. Ethanol AgEcon
Bryant, Henry L.; Outlaw, Joe L.; Richardson, James W.; Higgins, Lindsey M.; Campiche, Jody L..
After several months of increases, fossil fuel prices decreased substantially in August and September of 2006. • Crude oil prices directly affect gasoline prices, which are an important determinant of ethanol demand. Natural gas prices are an important cost of ethanol production. • This briefing paper provides projections of ethanol and corn prices, production, and use, given recent developments in fossil fuel markets.

Impact of United States Corn-Based Ethanol Production on Land Use AgEcon
Sobowale, Flakkeh; Dicks, Michael R.; Adam, Brian D.; Campiche, Jody L..
This study measures the impact of corn-based ethanol production in the United States on land use in other countries, or indirect land use. Indirect land use is a change from non-cropland to cropland (e.g. deforestation) that may occur in response to increasing scarcity of cropland. As farmers worldwide respond to higher crop prices in order to maintain the global food supply and demand balance, pristine lands are cleared and converted to new cropland to replace the crops for feed and food that were diverted elsewhere to biofuel production. The results show that increasing ethanol production in the US has a positive and significant relation to U.S corn price. However, U.S. corn price does not have a significant impact on changes in corn acreage in Brazil...

Lessons Learned in the Southern Region after the First Year of Implementation of the New Commodity Programs AgEcon
Campiche, Jody L.; Harris, Wesley L..
The development of the commodity programs in the 2008 Farm Bill involved the origination of two complex revenue support initiatives. The two new programs, Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) and Supplemental Revenue Assurance (SURE), expanded the risk management tool kit of agricultural producers. The SURE program is a permanent disaster assistance program, whereas the ACRE program is a revenue-based commodity program offered as an alternative to the price-based Direct and Counter-Cyclical Program (DCP) created in the 2002 Farm Bill. For the 2009 signup, only 7.7% of eligible U.S. farms enrolled in the ACRE program. In the southern region, three states had no farms electing ACRE and four others had less than 50. Excluding Oklahoma, less than 1% of all...

Examining the Evolving Correspondence Between Petroleum Prices and Agricultural Commodity Prices AgEcon
Campiche, Jody L.; Bryant, Henry L.; Richardson, James W.; Outlaw, Joe L..
Over the last few years, the production of renewable fuels has increased dramatically. Rising oil prices, limited supplies of fossil fuel, and increased concerns about global warming have created a growing demand for renewable energy sources. Both the ethanol and biodiesel industries have experienced tremendous growth in the past few years. The production of these fuels is highly dependent on the availability of agricultural feedstocks. This research examined the covariability between crude oil prices and corn, sorghum, sugar, soybeans, soybean oil, and palm oil prices during the 2003-2007 time period. Johansen cointegration tests revealed no cointegrating relationships during the 2003-2005 time frame. However, corn prices and soybean prices were...

Potential Economic Impacts of the Managed Haying and Grazing Provision of the Conservation Reserve Program AgEcon
Campiche, Jody L.; Dicks, Michael R.; Shideler, David W.; Dickson, Amanda.
The Food Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 included a new provision that allowed managed haying and grazing (including the harvest of biomass), if consistent with the conservation of soil, water quality, and wildlife habitat, in return for partial reductions in the annual CRP payments. The legislation provided for managed (or limited use) haying and grazing on the CRP acreage rather than prohibiting all use. This research analyzed whether or not the alternative grazing and haying scenarios would dramatically impact the price of beef or hay, and we estimated the impact such changes would have on state economies.

An Analysis of Cointegration: Investigation of the Cost-Price Squeeze in Agriculture AgEcon
Campiche, Jody L.; Bryant, Henry L.; Richardson, James W.; Outlaw, Joe L..
The differences in prices paid and prices received by farmers are examined using cointegration analysis. A Johansen cointegration test between prices paid and prices received revealed that the series were cointegrated. After accounting for technological change, we do not reject a long-run one-for-one correspondence between prices paid and prices received.

A Brief Summary of U.S. Farm Program Provisions AgEcon
Richardson, James W.; Anderson, David P.; Outlaw, Joe L.; Campiche, Jody L..
This publication began as a need for a short summary of farm programs and farm bills for two agricultural economics courses focusing on agricultural policy -- ag. economics 429, and ag. economics 614. Over time, it became clear that many students taking these courses had less and less background in agriculture and less (even cursory) knowledge of policies than those of the recent past. After this list was developed, a number of other professional agricultural economists found copies and began to use it, hence its publication in a more structured form. The list of Farm Program Provisions is not all-inclusive. It certainly does not contain all the laws and provisions that have affected agriculture over the years. However, it is an easy reference to farm...
