Despite the importance of the organic sector in Italy, there are still many difficulties in crop management amenable to weed control, plant protection and soil fertility keeping. Concerning this last aspect and focusing attention to the vegetables crops, the subject is even more complex for the intensive cultivations, the difficulty of rotations implementation, etc. To develop research programmes, we have in a preliminary phase carried out, in a representative area in the south of Italy, a survey aimed at better understanding the main characteristics of organic vegetable agrosystems in terms of plant nutrition and fertility maintenance. The picture concerning about fifty farms is presented and discussed. |

A bovine manure compost (BMC) and a green compost (GC) were evaluated as components of substrates in partial substitution of peat for organic melon seedlings production. Treatments, differentiated on the basis of the volume percentage of the two analysed composts, were compared to the control (a mixture of peat, coconut fibre and perlite). In order to respect the guidelines of organic production, all the treatments were fertilised, at the beginning of the trial, with guano. Compost-based substrates were analysed for physical, physicochemical and chemical parameters (bulk density, porosity, pH, EC, nutrients content etc.). Even though significant differences were observed, recorded values were in the range of acceptability for growing media. In terms of... |

"Improving soil conservation and resource use in organic cropping systems for vegetable production through introduction and management of Agro-ecological Service Crops” (SoilVeg) is an innovative European research project, led by the Italian Agricultural Research Council (CRA) and funded, at European level, by Core Organic Plus. It has kicked off last March 2015, in Matera, the Italian city recently awarded European Capital of Culture: for 3 years, 9 European countries and 14 partner Institutions will be working together with the aim to study the better management of Agro-ecological Service Crops. |

Living mulch management may have an effect on production of the crop and nutrient competition between the plant species in the field. In this paper, the amount of soil mineral nitrogen (N) available in the top soil during the cauliflower growing cycle and N uptake of the different components of the system were determined in two experimental sites in Italy and Slovenia where two different systems of living mulch management were compared (early sowed, late sowed) with a system with no living mulch. Moreover, nutritional competition of a hybrid and two open pollinated cultivars against weeds and living mulch was evaluated. |

This volume contains proposals for criteria for evaluation of plant protection products, fertilisers and soil conditioners1 to be used in organic agriculture. These ideas were developed in the course of the European Union (EU) Concerted Action project ‘ORGANIC INPUTS EVALUATION’ (QLK5-CT-2002-02565). For more information on this project see the end of this volume or visit the project website www.organicinputs.org. The documents in this volume are proposals elaborated by the project consortium and external experts. They were discussed with a broader audience at a public conference held in Brussels on October 13, 2005, and have been amended accordingly. Our proposals also include a “criteria matrix”, which is in Microsoft Excel format, and therefore stands... |

A six-year study was carried out in an organically managed orange orchard located in Sicily (Southern Italy) to assess the effect of compost and organic fertilizers utilisation on soil quality. Adopting a randomized-block experimental design with three replicates, four treatments were carried out. In treatments 1 and 2, two different composts (C1 from distillery by products and C2 from livestock wastes) were applied. The plots of treatment 3 were fertilized using dried poultry manure. The control treatment was fertilized with mineral/synthetic fertilizers. In order to verify the hypothesis that composts and organic fertilizers improve soil fertility, soil quality was evaluated by selecting dynamic soil parameters, as indicators linked to C and N cycles.... |

Vegetables with a high nitrogen demand such as cauliflower may cause intensive leaching of nitrate to the environment in conventional as well as in organic production. In organic cropping systems, the use of an in-season living mulch may decrease the risk of nitrate leaching after harvest when left growing in the field to the end of the leaching season in spring. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of growing an in-season living mulch including legumes on the risk of leaching of inorganic nitrogen over winter, and soil nitrogen availability the following spring. Three field experiments were carried out in Slovenia, Germany and Denmark in the frame of the Interveg project (CORE organic II). Evaluation of soil inorganic nitrogen content was... |

Ecological services may be exploited by use of living mulches in intercropping systems for production of vegetable crops. But may high yields be attained in intercropping systems for production of resource demanding crops such as cauliflower? In the frame of the InterVeg (Core Organic II) project, four field experiments were carried out in IT, SLO, DE and DK in order to study the effect of the living mulch introduction in cauliflower based cropping systems on crop yield and yield quality. The preliminary results, obtained after the first year project, showed yield and produces quality equal to those obtained in the sole cropping system if the system is properly managed (i.e. LM is late sown or its growth is controlled by root pruning). |

In Italy, as in other countries, Organic Food and Farming (OFF) research suffers of a very high fragmentation being carried out by many public research institutes, Universities and private centres. In more recent years, due to the increasing relevance of OFF within national rural development programmes strong efforts have been addressed towards an improvement of the efficiency of the fundings distribution, the research system and its activity reorganization, and a reduction of overlapping initiatives. A view on projects and institutions currently working on OFF research in Italy is presented, mainly focusing on the available public financial instruments and the main projects funded by MIPAF. Most of the Italian research projects investigates plant... |

A field experiment was carried out in Central Italy on growing melon (Cucumis melo L.) after barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Three different systems of cover crop termination (green manure, roller crimper and fallow, as control) were combined with three doses of compost (0, 15 and 30 t ha-1 d.m.) in a strip plot design. The main objective of the research was to evaluate their effects on organic melon production and on short and long term soil nitrogen (N) fertility. Marketable yield and quality and soil N availability along the melon cycle were determined and a simplified N budget calculated. Green manure (GM) treatment showed the highest total and marketable yield, followed by fallow (FA), while roller crimper (RC) was characterized by a significant lower... |
