The Fed Cattle Market Simulator (FCMS) was developed by a team of researchers at Oklahoma State University to aid in understanding the forces that influence price discovery in the fed cattle market. Participants in the FCMS play the role of feedlot marketing managers and packing plant procurement agents, and trade paper pens of cattle in the experimental market. Previous research with the FCMS has not attempted to capture the dynamic nature of the price discovery process; this paper uses a partial-adjustment approach to accomplish that goal. A mixed linear model is used to accommodate both fixed and random effects in the data. Prices for Choice and Select grade fed cattle are derived from wholesale and retail beef markets. Choice-Select price discounts are a key component of fed cattle pricing, whether packers purchase fed cattle on a live weight, dressed weight, or grid. This study identifies supply, demand, and other factors affecting the Choice-Select discount series using an adaptive expectations model. It is found that the lagged value of the discount as well as the percentage grading Choice exert statistically significant influences on the discount, while neither the boxed beef price nor seasonality affect the discount. |

The goal of this research was to determine success factors for New Generation Cooperatives (NGCs). A self-explicated approach was used to assess the importance of various factors grouped in broad categories using data collected from a mailout survey of NGC managers. Results suggest that factors in the "Planning and Development" and "Financing and Costs" categories are considered to be critically important by NGC managers, though differences in factor rankings exist between managers of enterprises involved in the processing of different commodities. |

The discovery of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Alberta and the subsequent U.S. border closure raised concerns about the reliance of Canada’s cattle industry upon U.S. packers. It became clear that Canada lacked the slaughter capacity to support the number of cattle going to market. This and other factors resulted in steep price declines. Since 2003, slaughter capacity has increased by approximately 46 percent. Given that many of the start-ups are small-scale operations that in many cases lack experience and financial backing, questions arise regarding the viability and sustainability of these enterprises.
