A PARTIAL-ADJUSTMENT, MIXED LINEAR MODEL OF PRICE DISCOVERY IN AN EXPERIMENTAL MARKET FOR FED CATTLE AgEcon
Carlberg, Jared G.; Ward, Clement E..
The Fed Cattle Market Simulator (FCMS) was developed by a team of researchers at Oklahoma State University to aid in understanding the forces that influence price discovery in the fed cattle market. Participants in the FCMS play the role of feedlot marketing managers and packing plant procurement agents, and trade paper pens of cattle in the experimental market. Previous research with the FCMS has not attempted to capture the dynamic nature of the price discovery process; this paper uses a partial-adjustment approach to accomplish that goal. A mixed linear model is used to accommodate both fixed and random effects in the data. Results show that the transaction price adjusts only sixteen percent on a week-by-week basis to its desired level. As such,...

The Economics of Annual Legume and Double Legume Cover Cropping in Southern Minnesota AgEcon
McLellan, Ashleigh; Carlberg, Jared G..
Using historical data from crop producing farms in southern Manitoba, this study quantifies the economic savings that could be realized by using legumes to supply nitrogen in a cereal-oilseed based rotation. Stochastic budgets are developed for four alternative crop rotations and the returns associated with each are evaluated using the utility-based risk ranking methods of stochastic dominance and stochastic efficiency. It is found that including a legume cover crop in a cereal-oilseed based rotation can reduce the amount of nitrogen required by a subsequent crop and in turn increase the net returns associated with the complete crop rotation.

Factors Affecting Quality Grade Discounts for Fed Cattle AgEcon
Hogan, Robert J., Jr.; Carlberg, Jared G.; Ward, Clement E.; Peel, Derrell S..
Prices for Choice and Select grade fed cattle are derived from wholesale and retail beef markets. Choice-Select price discounts are a key component of fed cattle pricing, whether packers purchase fed cattle on a live weight, dressed weight, or grid. This study identifies supply, demand, and other factors affecting the Choice-Select discount series using an adaptive expectations model. It is found that the lagged value of the discount as well as the percentage grading Choice exert statistically significant influences on the discount, while neither the boxed beef price nor seasonality affect the discount.

Impact of Market Access Reforms On the Canadian Dairy Industry AgEcon
Hacault, Anastasie; Rude, James; Carlberg, Jared G..
The World Trade Organization's (WTO) latest round of negotiations, the Doha Development Agenda (DDA), will likely change the way most agricultural products are traded around the world. These new liberalization policies will potentially affect the Canadian production and consumption of dairy products. This paper uses a partial equilibrium model with stochastic world prices to evaluate the effects of these trade reforms on the Canadian dairy industry. Different liberalization scenarios are simulated and the outcomes are analyzed and discussed.

Development and Implementation of a Mandatory Animal Identification System: The Canadian Experience AgEcon
Carlberg, Jared G..
This article provides a brief history of the animal identification (ID) system that previously existed in Canada along with details on efforts to ‘‘reidentify’’ the country’s cattle herd. The current state of ID for various species is summarized, and the state of regulations federally and for major agricultural province are outlined. A short background on the economics of animal ID is provided. Particular attention is paid to the operation of the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, an industry–government initiative charged with identifying the national cattle herd. The animal ID system in Canada is found to have performed well when called on in times of animal health crises, although there have been notable deficiencies in its performance on occasion....

Effects of a Traceability System on the Economic Impacts of a Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak AgEcon
Jones, Jason; Carlberg, Jared G.; Pendell, Dustin L..
The research reported in this paper created an epidemiological foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) spread model for Ontario. Disease simulations were constructed to reflect three levels of the cattle identification and movement recording system. Outputs generated by the epidemiological model are used to calculate the direct disease control costs of a FMD outbreak. Welfare effects caused by a FMD outbreak are also calculated for each level of cattle traceability using an equilibrium displacement model. Parameter sensitivity was tested for both the epidemiological and economic model results. It is found that the benefits to the beef cattle industry of increasing the ability to trace direct animal contacts during a FMD disease outbreak in Ontario are less than the...

EFFECTS OF OWNERSHIP RESTRICTIONS ON FARMLAND VALUES IN SASKATCHEWAN AgEcon
Carlberg, Jared G..
Restrictions on the ownership of farmland by nonresidents of Saskatchewan were imposed by the Farmland Security Act (FSA) in 1974. The FSA has been blamed by some observers for depressed provincial land values. An adaptive expectations present value model is developed to estimate the effects of the FSA, with the province of Alberta included as a control. Results of seemingly unrelated regressions and generalized autoregressive conditional hetereoscedasticity estimates find no statistically significant effect of the FSA on the value of land in Saskatchewan. This may indicate that the effect of the regulatory change is too small to be measured accurately.

Alternative Theories and Empirical Approaches to Price Discovery: An Application to Fed Cattle AgEcon
Carlberg, Jared G.; Ward, Clement E..
Price discovery is a frequent topic of research, but many times is not clearly defined and thus purported to cover a myriad of topics. This article provides two alternative theories as the basis for one line of price discovery research. Empirical models consistent with the two theories are estimated using a common data set. Empirical results differ as expected. This article evidences why the theoretical basis for an empirical model depends on clearly defining the objective(s) of the research.

Success Factors for New Generation Cooperatives AgEcon
Carlberg, Jared G.; Ward, Clement E.; Holcomb, Rodney B..
The goal of this research was to determine success factors for New Generation Cooperatives (NGCs). A self-explicated approach was used to assess the importance of various factors grouped in broad categories using data collected from a mailout survey of NGC managers. Results suggest that factors in the "Planning and Development" and "Financing and Costs" categories are considered to be critically important by NGC managers, though differences in factor rankings exist between managers of enterprises involved in the processing of different commodities.

Comparing Willingness-to-Pay Estimates from Experimental Auctions with Mailed Surveys Incorporating Cheap Talk AgEcon
Froehlich, Eve J.; Carlberg, Jared G..
Willingness-to-pay (WTP) results from experimental auctions are compared to those from cheap-talk and conventional surveys for branded beef products in Canada. It is found that while the cheap-talk survey appears to mitigate hypothetical bias compared to the conventional survey, cheap-talk survey WTP remains higher than that in experimental auctions.

POTENTIAL HEALTHCARE SAVINGS FROM PLANT STEROL ENRICHED FOODS IN CANADA AgEcon
Gyles, Collin; Carlberg, Jared G.; Jones, Peter J.H..
Increased consumption of foods containing plant sterols has the potential to reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) and thus reduce costs associated with treating that disease in a significant way. This paper reports the results of an investigation of the potential monetary benefits of allowing foods enriched with plant sterols to be marketed in Canada. The objective of this research was to estimate the annual savings that would accrue to Canada’s single-payer publicly funded health care system if plant sterols were approved for use. If foods containing plant sterols are consumed at a sufficient rate, a reduction in CHD should follow. This research employs a variation of traditional cost-of-illness analysis entailing four steps: (i)...

Kill or Shill: Processing Capacity and Cattle Prices with a Closed Border AgEcon
Rude, James; Carlberg, Jared G..
The discovery of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Alberta and the subsequent U.S. border closure raised concerns about the reliance of Canada’s cattle industry upon U.S. packers. It became clear that Canada lacked the slaughter capacity to support the number of cattle going to market. This and other factors resulted in steep price declines. Since 2003, slaughter capacity has increased by approximately 46 percent. Given that many of the start-ups are small-scale operations that in many cases lack experience and financial backing, questions arise regarding the viability and sustainability of these enterprises. This study examines existing processing capacity as well as planned expansions and discusses the implications for Canadian cattle prices....

Comparing Canadian and U.S. Cattle Feeding Pricing Practices and Perceptions of Pricing Issues AgEcon
Ward, Clement E.; Carlberg, Jared G.; Brocklebank, Andrea.
Competition among beef packing firms, use of so-called captive supply, and methods of price discovery have been prolonged, contentious issues in the U.S. beef industry for two decades or more. While of lesser apparent concern in Canada for many years, these same matters rose to the forefront of beef industry issues after the Canada–U.S. border closure that resulted from Canada’s first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in May 2003.
