Future agricultureal systems will produce bioenergy on basis of on- and off-farm crops and residues, implying beneficial recycling of plant nutrients back to soil and plants. This will reduce emission of climate gases and may also reduce spread of weed seeds, parasites and pathogens. However, it may also induce long-term reduction in soil organic pools.

Effects of green manure storage and incorporation methods on greenhouse gas fluxes and N mineralization after soil application Organic Eprints

Organic arable farming faces challenges with low crop yields, partly due to inefficient use of green manure-derived nitrogen (N). Under current farming practices, green manure leys are often cut and mulched during the growing season with the associated risk of environmental N losses, leading to eutrophication and global warming. In this 3-month incubation experiment, we tested a new green manure management strategy as part of the ICROFS project HighCrop. With the new strategy, green manure leys are instead harvested and preserved until the following spring either as compost mixed with straw (grass-clover:straw, 4:1, w:w) or as silage of harvested ley biomass. Soil from the Højbakkegård experimental (BioConcens) field was amended with nothing (control), each of two anaerobic digested (AD) materials (mixture of AD cattle manure and maize, mixture of AD cattle manure and cut off grass-clover material), raw cattle manure, and grass-clover in five individual treat-ments. The materials were incorporated homogeneously into the soil and sampled destructively at 0, 1, 3 and 9 days after incorporation. Contribution of nitrification and denitrification to N2O emissions from urine patches Organic Eprints

Urine deposition by grazing livestock causes an immediate increase in nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, but the responsible mechanisms are not well understood. A nitrogen-15 (15N) labelling study was conducted in an organic grass-clover sward to examine the initial effect of urine on the rates and N2O loss ratio of nitrification (i.e. moles of N2O-N produced per moles of nitrate produced) and denitrification (i.e. moles of N2O produced per moles of N2O + N2 produced). Currently CO2 from fossil fuel combustion accounts for 57% of the global greenhouse gas emissions, whereas the strong greenhouse gases nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) contribute with 8% and 14%, respectively (IPCC, 2007). Agricultural activity is the dominant source of N2O, which is mainly associated with the use of nitrogen based fertilizers in agricultural production. Replacing fossil fuel-derived energy by biomass-derived energy is commonly and with increasing emphasis proposed as a mean to mitigate the CO2 emissions. En ny strategi kan måske forbedre udnyttelsen af det kvælstof, som fikseres af kløverplanter i økologisk planteavl. Vores studie viste en større frigivelse af kvælstof fra ensileret kløvergræs end fra kompost af kløvergræs iblandet halm. Samtidig fandt vi, at indarbejdning af grøngødning ved harvning frem for pløjning reducerede udledningen af den stærke drivhusgas, lattergas.

Recycling of bioenergy waste-stream materials to soil in organic farming systems Organic Eprints

The poster present data on how de-gassted waste-stream material affect soil quality parameters in comparence to raw manure and clover-grass application. The results showed that residues after bio-gasification seems suited for fertilizer usage and not much different from application of raw cattle manure. However, the long-term effects on soil organic matter content needs to be further clarified. Application of clover-grass to the soil caused a significant loss of C and N due to gaseous emissions.

Annual maize and perennial grass-clover strip cropping to produce biomass for bioenergy – within an organic farming approach Organic Eprints

A field experiment was carried out including alternating perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) – clover (Trifolium repens + Trifolium pretense L.) pasture mix with annual maize (Zea mays L.). Maize was established after soil incorporation of a 1st-year grass-clover in a 6-m wide strip, whereas grass-clover was established without incorporating the 1st-year grass-clover in an equivalent 6-m wide strip. This resulted in an early interspecific competitive advantage for the perennial strip and when growing maize in close proximity to grass-clover total dry matter production was reduced with about 50% compared to >150 cm distance. Nitrogen mineralization and greenhouse gas emissions after soil incorporation of ensiled and composted grass-clover as green manure Organic Eprints

This 3-month incubation study showed that ensiled grass-clover was a better nitrogen (N) source than a composted grass-clover and straw mix (grass-clover:straw, 4:1, w:w), owing to the high content of labile compounds compared to the more degraded compost. Our study also indicated that emissions of the strong greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) can be reduced by incorporating green manure using harrowing instead of ploughing. The silage-derived N release by the end of the incubation was equivalent to 38-42 kg N ha-1, which corresponded to one third of the N applied in silage, with no difference between ploughing and harrowing. In contrast, no net release of mineral N was detected from the composted grass-clover.

Agricultural soils are known to be a considerable source of the strong greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O), and in soil N2O is mainly produced by nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. In Denmark, grass-clover pastures are an important component of the cropping system in organic as well as conventional dairy farming, and on a European scale grass-clover mixtures represent a large part of the grazed grasslands. Biological dinitrogen (N2) fixation in clover provides a major N input to these systems, but knowledge is sparse regarding the amount of fixed N2 lost from the grasslands as N2O. The objective of the study was to examine the effect on N2O and CH4 emissions when residues from bio-energy production are recycling as organic fertilizer for a maize energy crop. The study showed that the N2O emission associated with the cultivation of the maize crop offset a considerable faction of the fossil CO2, which was avoided by producing the biofuels.

Efluents from biogas production may be recycled to soil as plant nutrition. However, the proportion of plant-available nitrogen is high and may cause loss due to leaching or gaseous emissions. Hence, such waste stream materials must be applied with care to ensure maximum plant uptake to minimize loss. Spread of weed seeds via application of biogas effluents is only a problem when the digestion is performed at mesophilic conditions and when the seeds are staying less than a week in the plant. At thermophilic conditions, seeds from a range of weed plant were unable to germinate efter just a few days.
