Reports of cyanobacterial blooms developing worldwide have considerably increased, and, in most cases, the predominant toxins are microcystins. The present study reports a cyanobacterial bloom in Lake Violão, Torres, Rio Grande do Sul State, in January 2005. Samples collected on January 13, 2005, were submitted to taxonomical, toxicological, and chemical studies. The taxonomical analysis showed many different species of cyanobacteria, and that Microcystis protocystis and Sphaerocavum cf. brasiliense were dominant. Besides these, Microcystis panniformis, Anabaena oumiana,Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, and Anabaenopsis elenkinii f. circularis were also present. The toxicity of the bloom was confirmed through intraperitoneal tests in mice, and chemical... |

Seaweeds are subject to numerous biological interactions and sometimes to extreme abiotic conditions, so they have developed among other defense mechanisms, the ability to produce biologically active substances. Thus, these organisms produce mainly terpenes and phenols. Among others, the antifungal activity, due to its importance in human and animal health and the production of agricultural products, has been the subject of several studies. In the present work, this activity was investigated in ten seaweeds extracts, by direct bioautography assays, compared to Colletotrichum lagenarium and disk diffusion assay, compared to Aspergillus flavus. The organisms studied were: Stypopodium zonale, Laurencia dendroidea, Ascophyllum nodosum, Sargassum muticum,... |

Two new sulfated oligobromophenols from the marine red algae Osmundaria obtusiloba, 4-(1'-potassium sulfate, 2,3-dibromo, 1',4,5-trihydroxybenzyl) - 4''-(1'''-potassium sulfate, 2'',3''-dibromo, 1''',4'',5''-trihydroxybenzyl) sulfate and 1'-(2, 3-dibromo, 4-potassium sulfate, 1', 4, 5-trihydroxybenzyl) - 4''-(1''' potassium sulfate, 2'', 3''-dibromo, 1''', 4'', 5'' trihydroxybenzyl) sulfate, are herein reported. Besides them it was obtained 2, 2', 3, 3'-tetrabromo-4, 4', 5, 5'-tetrahydroxydiphenylmethane, 2, 3-dibromo-p-hydroxybenzyl methyl ether (methyl lanosol), dipotassium 2,3-dibromo-5-hydroxybenzyl 1',4-disulfate, 24-methylenecolest-5-en-3-beta-ol and alpha-D-mannopyranosyl-(1->2')-glycerate (digeneaside). The structures were determined by analysis... |
