Compatibility of animal husbandry practices of registered organic farmers with organic animal husbandry standards (OAHS): an assessment in Uttarakhand Organic Eprints
Bodapati, Subrahmanyeswari; Chander, Mahesh.
Organic fanning is increasingly being seen as one sustainable option to farmers, among the alternatives to conventional input intensive farming systems. Uttarakhand in India is promoting organic agriculture state state through registering the farmers and providing them necessary support including marketing in crop sector. However, these registered organic farmers, who maintain two or more than two livestock species under crop-livestock mixed farming systems, not yet geared to organic livestock production per se. As 'organic' is a process claim rather than a product claim, the study on the compatibility of animal husbandry practices of registered organic farmers with the recommended organic livestock production standards, may provide an idea of the...

Assessment of Farm Animal Welfare using Organic Animal Husbandry Standards as Yardstick: A micro-level study in India Organic Eprints
Pathak, Prabir Kumar; Chander, Mahesh.
Animal welfare has attracted widespread attention worldwide in recent times including within the conventional systems of intensive production in industrialized countries. It can be assessed in a number of ways, also, the yardstick of welfare may differ from people to people and region to region since OIE is only now considering development of more science-based internationally acceptable criteria for animal welfare. In this study, the organic livestock production standards, developed inter alia, the Government of India (GOI) under its National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), were used to assess the practices being followed at farmers' level in India. Organic production standards are supposed to keep animal welfare as one of the top most...

Organic livestock production: an emerging opportunity with new challenges for producers in tropical countries Organic Eprints
Chander, Mahesh; Bodapati, Subrahmanyeswari; Mukherjee, Reena; Kumar, Sanjay.
Agrochemicals, veterinary drugs, antibiotics and improved feeds can increase the food supply while minimising production costs in various livestock production systems around the world. However, these days, quality-conscious consumers are increasingly seeking environmentally safe, chemical-residue-free healthy foods, along with product traceability and a high standard of animal welfare, which organic production methods are said to ensure. Organic production is not only a challenge for producers in developing countries, it offers new export opportunities as well. Organic agriculture is practised by 1.8 million producers in 160 countries, and production of organically grown food continues to increase steadily by 15% per year. Most tropical countries are now...

Integrating indigenous knowledge of farmers for sustainable organic farming: An assessment in Uttarakhand state of India Organic Eprints
Bodapti, Subrahmanyeswari; Chander, Mahesh.
Success of organic farming largely depends on farmers’ knowledge of ecological systems, environment and on-farm renewable resources, as per the principles of organic farming. A study has been conducted to know the traditional knowledge and indigenous practices being followed by farmers in agriculture and animal husbandry to assess the possibility of integrating with organic farming in Uttarakhand, which is the first state in India promoting organic farming in a systematic way. The farmers of Uttarakhand especially women possessed a vast pool of indigenous knowledge with regards to livestock management leading to reduced dependence on externally purchased inputs as required under organic farming systems. And the farmers were in the practice of utilizing...

Bodapati, Subrahmanyeswari; Chander, Mahesh.
Organic farming an innovative area gaining importance worldwide and became a boon to the areas which are organic by default and far from the reach of green revolution technologies. Uttarakhand state in India, where most of its farming is organic by default, promoting organic farming in a systematic way through creation of special institutions like UOCB. As attitudes assist individuals in processing complex information and to make decisions, an instrument has been developed to measure attitude of organic farmers towards organic livestock farming, for which ‘Likert method of summated ratings’ was followed. A total of 102 statements were developed from the subject matter of organic animal husbandry standards, worked out by the Ministry of Commerce and...

ORGANIC AGRICULTURE: A WAY FORWARD TO ACHIEVE GENDER EQUALITY IN INDIA Organic Eprints
Bodapati, Subrahmanyeswari; Chander, Mahesh.
Among several benefits of organic agriculture, emphasis on gender equality is one important aspect which makes it unique as it is believed that it empowers women. This can be contrasted with conventional agriculture, which is said to marginalise women. To understand gender dynamics in organic farming, 111 men and 69 women registered organic farmers were studied using a semi-structured interview schedule and on-farm observations in the context of livestock production activities during 2006-07 in the North Indian state of Uttarakhand, which has embraced organic agriculture by declaring itself as first organic state in India. Land and livestock ownership was mostly with men, whereas income was jointly managed by both men and women followed by women members...

ORGANIC ANIMAL HUSBANDRY DEVELOPMENT IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: CHALLENGES, CONTENTIOUS ISSUES & OPPORTUNITIES Organic Eprints
Chander, Mahesh; Kumar, Sanjay; Mondal, Shymal Kumar; Mukherjee, Reena; Rathore, Ramswarup.
Organic agriculture is rapidly growing around the world (37.2 Million ha in 162 countries) with 1.8 million producers including significant number of organic farmers in developing countries like India. The global market for organic products has reached to US$ 62.8 billion and 86 countries now have an organic legislation (Willer et al, 2013). It is also well recognized now that the organic animal husbandry has not grown as faster as cereal crops, fruits, nuts, spices, tea, coffee and cotton. While organic farming is rapidly gaining ground in developing countries the research and development (R&D) activities in organic animal husbandry is confined to EU and a few other developed countries in North and Australia. There are opportunities as well as...

Chander, Mahesh; Mukherjee, Reena.
The animal production system, may be broadly classified as traditional, conventional and organic with their distinct characteristics. While traditional and conventional production systems are well established and their respective features known widely, the organic animal husbandry system has emerged only recently, which is still evolving. Many believe that the organin animal husbandv is same as traditional animal husbandry practiced in India since centuries, which of course, it is not. The organic animal husbandry is far more sophisticated and knowledge intensive system of' animal production meant to safeguard not only the human health but also the welfare of animals and the environment on the whole. Thus, it is important to develop correct understanding...

Organic agriculture world-wide offers the promise of a future to produce and distribute food and other farm products in a healthy, ecologically sound, truly sustainable and fair way. The full benefits of organic agriculture are just now being realized—from ecosystem services to the provision of healthier food - yet, to reach its full potential organic farming needs to address many challenges. While organic agriculture has grown in strength and is in the most favorable position it has ever been in with respect to market conditions, government policies and international institutional support, it still does not have adequate resources to continue its expansion. The Technology Innovation Platform of IFOAM (TIPI) has developed a vision and an agenda to advance...

Organic agriculture can and should play an important role in solving future challenges in producing food. The low level of external inputs combined with knowledge on sustainablity minimizes environmental contamination and can help to produce more food for more people without negatively impacting our environment. Organic agriculture not only includes farming as a production practice but it also includes processing, trade and consumption. Nevertheless, Organic agriculture must always evolve to overcome emerging challenges. Science-based knowledge attained through dedicated research is required to strengthen organic food and farming as a means to solve future challenges. In 2010, a global discussion about Organic 3.0 was initiated to address current problems...
